After interviewing and consulting with three well-known clinics in the Denver metro area, I selected Michael J. Taravella, MD at the UC Eye Center to perform my cataract surgery. Unfortunately, based on my experience, I would strongly encourage anyone considering this provider to take my feedback into account.
I found Dr. Taravella's bedside manner to be unprofessional and disappointing. During my pre-operative appointment, the nurse repeatedly said the doctor would be in shortly to review what would be happening during my surgery. I could hear other physicians meeting with and speaking directly to their patients, but I did not see or hear from my doctor prior to surgery. Another physician did come in and clearly explained what would be happening, which I appreciated.
I did not interact with Dr. Taravella until I was already in the operating room. Even then, during the first eye surgery, he did not speak to me at all and instead conversed with what I assume were fellows present during the procedure.
During one of my four post-operative appointments, I waited approximately 55 minutes to be seen. Dr. Taravella spent a total of about four minutes with me and simply stated that I was "healing nicely." He did not review my vision prescription, share my eye pressure results, or address the questions I had documented during my initial screening, specifically whether the ORA testing produced different results than my initial consultations. This was particularly frustrating given that this testing incurred a significant out-of-pocket cost that was not covered by insurance.
For clarity and full transparency, I want to note that the pre-op and post-op staff, check-in staff, and other post-operative physicians were outstanding. I saw three different physicians across my four post-operative appointments, all of whom provided excellent care. My concerns are specific to the surgeon who performed the procedure. In hindsight, I wish I had selected a different physician for my surgery.
Dr Taravella has superb bedside manner. Very kind and reassuring and clearly knowledgeable about his specialty. it is very clear that he enjoys taking care of patients. This may seem like a minor point, but he comes to work impeccably dressed which is so unlike many physicians now days. I think this makes patients, or at least this patient, feel more secure and respected.
In addition, the clinic overall is very well run. Front desk and medical staff are polite and helpful.
I just cant say enough good things about the UCHealth Eye Center at Anschutz. Did you know they have an eye hospital where the specialty is nothing but eyes? Why go anywhere else? Dr. SooHoo and all of the supporting staff are the ticket to premier eye health. My cataract surgery was a huge success and management of my other eye conditions is masterfully treated.

Dr Subramanian is a wonderful doctor, he literally gave me my life back. I had been suffering from double vision for 2 yrs due to TED. It has been 14 days since my surgery and I'm functioning without my prism glasses. Thank you ,just doesn't seem adequate to describe how I feel. Thank you to your wonderful staff for taking care of me. THANK YOU! ,THANK YOU !, THANK YOU!...
This office is truly phenomenal! I had missed the appointment I traveled 4 hours for because I had mixed up the dates. The scheduling department was able to get me in that same day even though they were fully booked. They totally saved my butt, and kindly accommodated me! And the staff provides the best quality of care. The technician that took the photos of my eyes was amazing! He made the experience much easier and more comfortable. The Doctors were all incredibly informative and friendly. The best healthcare experience I've ever had.
Update: As April 2023 the new parking garage (lot 2) in front of the cancer, inpatien pavilion is OPEN!! The new parking lot has two entrances one across the eye center and the other across the inpatient Pavillion. And there is walkway into the building on the upper floor so you don't need walk into traffic on the ground level!!
Great resources. However, as it is university hospital and largest in region so there is young doctors shadowing to gain experiences which mean additional exam before the primary physician do the final assessment.
Doctors are good. Demand is high so the appointment could take some time. Online check-in help speed up the check in process and recommended.
The campus currently (probably till second half of 2023) under construction of new parking garage that parking is a bit of mess specially the road in front of the eye center.
I love this place! Very rarely do it in into any issues at this facility. I'm always treated with courtesy and respect. Parking is definitely better after the parking garage was built. I highly recommend UC Health for any and all you health needs.
