Eye Care On the Ridge- Dr. Shad Whealtey OD

I had eye surgery in The Wytheville. By Oct. 22nd. I still did not have vision in that eye on the first week of Feb. After a visit to Wytheville again still no vision. I began to feel frightened. The eye became sore to the touch. Called Wytheville again no call back. Called Eye Care on the Ridge and got an appointment with Dr. Keith Gagnon. By the end of the first week vision is rapidly returning to the eye. His diagnosis was dead on. I am 85 years old. Have seen quite a few doctors in my days. Very few have impressed me like Keith. Today he changed my dosage. I strongly believe my vision will improve many times over again.

Dr. Shad is a wonderful doctor! I went earlier this year for an emergency appointment & after several tests they were able to identify the issue. Perfect experience. Months later (same year 2025) I was worked in for another emergency appointment. I've been here previously w/ the SAME insurance. (Medicaid) I drove to the other location. About a half hour drive. I go to check in and the receptionist asked for my insurance cards. I handed them to her and she said "oh, we actually don't take Sentara Medicaid anymore." I said really, when? "Since about June." I replied with no one told me that. She said "they should have told you." I asked for my cards back and I told her next time someone has an appointment you guys need to be sure to tell someone so they don't waste their gas or time. I walked out after. Very frustrating & not very professional in my opinion as a business to not verify insurance. Really upset.

First, the optometrist was great. 2nd front desk staff very unprofessional the day I went in to pick up my glasses. The older lady upon me entering did ask how she could help but I was on the phone had a client in crisis, while I sat an finished my phone call the older lady on the left an girl in the middle appeared to be talking about me: old lady was staring an laughing, middle girl stood up an looked at me an sat down, an then the older lady wanted to hold up a folder an hide what she was saying as at this point they were making it uncomfortable. I approached the counter when I was finished with my phone call an stated I'm here to pick up my glasses: an rudely the older lady said you goto optic not here. Again I have 8 family members that goto this office, but believe me: not again: front staff very unprofessional an need to focus on work instead of laughing an gossiping about clients who are paying their salary. As a business owner Personally I'd fire both of them. An yes my names on this review!

Doctors are great. Company policies are horrible. Scheduled an appointment a year in advance. Showed up to appointment and they had cancelled it without informing me it had been cancelled! Wow way to keep your paying customers! Office manager blamed me for not confirming appointment. I confirmed it when I made it!

I hadn't been here in a while, it's always been a very nice place, but the lady who took me back and the doctor were the nicest people I think I have ever met I highly recommend this business, they are awesome

Was sent card saying your appt time said to notify if need to arrange different time. Got there and told no appt because din't call. No where did it say appt would be canceled if you dont call. But hey that me. But front desk receptionist rolled her eyes and was rude about it. Need better customer service, I am cash paying customer and was going to buy new set glasses guess new doctor will get money now. Hope doctors aware of bad receptionist.

The receptionist told my daughter and I that she wouldn't bill her insurance for about a few days after her appointment so that she could be seen by the optometrist and the insurance would pay for it since it didn't come into affect until October 1, 2024. Her appointment was like September 26, 2024 approximately. So they seen her and gave her an eye exam and we paid $40 for a sample pair a week later. We go back to get her 6 month prescription and they said she owed $349 for her visit plus $214 for her prescription. I explained to her about what she or the receptionist that day had said and that's why they went ahead and saw her. We even cried because we thought that was very nice of her but they said no there weren't any notes stating that they had agreed to that and she owed $349 or they wouldn't order her contacts. My daughter has holes in her contacts and it hurts her eyes. AVOID THIS BUSINESS!!

We placed an order for glasses for my son and paid most of the balance upfront leaving a remaining balance of six dollars due at pick up we received a call informing us that his glasses were ready for pick up but we were told that we now owed an additional $112. The receptionist explained that changes were made to the order because the selection I made wasn't durable enough. This is completely unprofessional as they should have consulted us before making any changes.
