Dr Simon Fung, MD MA FRCOphth

My son has been going to Jules Stein since he was 3 years old due to a genetic disorder which affects his eye vision. Initially, we saw Dr. Demer, but in 2017, Dr. Fung was introduced to us by Dr. Demer to take over my son's vision care. We have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Fung. My son has lens dislocation in both of his eyes, which requires close monitoring every 6 months. Dr. Fung is very knowledgeable and professional. He always answer all our questions during each office visit. In the fall 2022 and summer of 2023, with Dr. Fung's advice, we finally decided it was time to have cataract surgery and eye muscle reconstructive surgery in each eye so that my son can see better and could be able to drive and also do better in school. Dr. Fung was on top of things and was the person in charge of having his surgical team reaching out us in timely manner, months prior to the surgery. He was available to answer all our concerns regarding the surgeries. If he couldn't answer the questions, he would forward our questions to the appropriate party to reach out to us with the answers such as insurance cost/deductible prior to the surgery. He is prompt to answer our questions within hours, or in the same day via the MyChart app. It is so awesome to find a doctor that is a great surgeon and who really cares for his patients. On the day of the surgery, he talked to my son and us thoroughly about the surgery and what to expect. When the surgery was prolonged longer than expected, he asked his nurse in the operation room to call us to update us that my son was ok. His surgery team, including the anesthesiologist, nurses are amazing. My son was be able to recover and was awake within the hour post op with no nausea/vomiting side effects or any complaints of pain in his eye(s). After the 2 surgeries, my son's vision was fixed from -12 and -14 to -2 prescription. Dr Fung did the surgery perfectly and also went above and beyond his duties and we all appreciate it very much. My wife and I highly recommend Dr. Fung. Thank you very much for all your help, Dr. Fung. Our son is doing better in school and will be able to drive soon all thanks to you! Thank you!

I did not know what to expect when I had to see an eye surgeon for my 7 month old son with a congenital cataract, but I can tell you that after our first appointment with Dr. Fung, I knew our son was in good hands. He held my son for me while I signed the consent for his surgery and he played with him all while explaining everything and walking me through the consent. He also worked to get my son's surgery done very quickly. We have followed up with him over the months following and have only had pleasant experiences, even though my son was less than cooperative at times. We are now moving and will no longer be seeing Dr. Fung but he has sent me every detail that I will need to share with my son's new Dr once we establish care. When Dr. Fung said he would do something he was always timely about it. I also appreciate how responsive he was to my emails with questions. We will miss Dr. Fung!

Dr. Fung and his team came to bring hope at such a dark moment in our lives. My baby was diagnosed with a serious eye condition (Congenital glaucoma) at only 3 months old. As first time parents we felt hopeless and scared with such a challenging diagnosis . We were seeing another Ophthalmologist prior to Dr. Fung that unfortunately couldn't help our baby due to how delicate his situation was and decided to refer us to UCLA stein eye institute instead and Words cannot express how thankful and blessed we are that Dr. Fung crossed our path. From the moment of our 1st consultation we automatically felt hopeful and felt like our prayers were finally answered. Dr. Fung is very professional, experienced,Humble and shows compassion for his clients . He always goes above and beyond to explain our concerns and questions thoroughly even after hours. We never feel rushed during our appointments and he's very patient and caring towards our child. The list goes on how great he is. My son is 17 months old now and he's so stable thanks to Dr. Fung and his team. He is a genuine example of what a Doctor should be. I would 1000% recommended Dr. Fung. You will definitely be in good hands. (There's a reason why he's top tier). Thank you so much Dr. Fung for everything you've done for our son. We are forever grateful for you and your team. Thank you Dr. Fung for all that you do. Our daughter was diagnosed with a unique eye condition when she was 4 months old. And we were lucky enough to be referred to Dr Fung. He met with us within an hour's notice on a Friday evening. He conducted a thorough analysis, spent as much as we needed to educate us, changed his schedule and penciled her in for an emergency surgery the following business day. Dr. Fung even answered more questions multiple times over that weekend. Despite how kind and intelligent Dr Fung was during our initial meeting, we were still very nervous and quite apprehensive with the surgery. We then researched his educational background and achievements. Dr Fung is absolutely brilliant. He was not only trained by one of the most prominent opthamology centers in the world, but he actively publishes in the top journals in his field. He has a tremendous amount of experience and is a problem solver. We did our due diligence -- and reached out to our network of friends and family who are doctors. Everyone who knew about the issue we were having led us to the same place - Dr. Fung. One of the doctors we interviewed said he wasn't the right person but if we could get time with Dr. Fung, he would be our guy. Most importantly, Dr Fung is extremely caring and treats each patient as his own child. He makes himself available, even on weekends, and is willing to answer all questions and address any concerns. He is very responsive and knows a great deal about all aspects of medicine. Also, he is careful with procedures and is never pushing for more surgeries. We feel very blessed to have Dr Fung as our daughter's surgeon. We highly recommend him to all.

My husband and I found Dr. Fung after seeing 2 other specialists for my daughter's serious eye diagnosis when she was only a week old. For any other parent that received a scary eye diagnosis for their child and are looking for the best of the best, let me make it easier for you by telling you to stop your search and take your child straight to Dr. Fung. He is absolutely the best. My daughter was diagnosed with Unilateral Congenital Cataracts and needed surgery at 6 weeks old to remove it and he did a beautiful job on my daughter's eye and has been taking care of her for over a year now. Anytime I messaged him after hours with concerns or even on weekends, he has always gotten back to me right away even though he doesn't need to. He is so gentle with my daughter during visits and treats her like a person. For example, when he has to give her eye drops, instead of having me restrain her and prying her eye open to get them in, he calms her and puts the drop in the corner of her eye while she blinks it in. It's those small things he does that makes all the difference in each visit. He also never rushes the appointment and takes the time to answer all my questions and concerns. It's not that he has all day, he's obviously a very busy man; he's just an exceptional doctor and human being. You don't meet doctors like him that often. I will forever be indebted to him for all he has done for my child. Thank you Dr. Fung!

Dr. Fung is exceptional. When I booked my first appointment with him my eyes were in atrocious shape and I'd been misdiagnosed about a dozen times because I had a very rare disease. Dr. Fung properly diagnosed me, prescribed me highly effective medication that has kept the disease under control, and has always been prompt and clear in answering my questions. He's also a really nice guy. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Fung - he's the epitome of what a good Doctor is.

Dr Fung is extremely thorough and made my daughter's eye surgery experience a success!! We are so pleased with his follow-up as well as the results of her eye surgery. He is extremely gentle with children and I would highly recommend him to anyone!!
