I have been with Looksie for a few years since the pandemic, when I stumbled upon they're super cute shop on Polk Street. I'm so glad now that they have a location here in East Cut, it's so convenient that I can just drop by after work. The doctors are very nice, and I feels like they always have some new gadget to try with. The associates are also very approachable, I like the quality and styles of their glasses options.
Great experience with an eye exam! Both Dr. Tran and the other employee working the store were kind and efficient. My exam felt thorough, and Dr. Tran was happy to answer my questions. Would recommend to anyone!
I decided to write this review because my friend just told me about his negative experience with Amy Tran and I realized that he was talking about the same optometrist that I had a less than stellar experience with last year. I also noticed that my previous review and all of the others are now gone, it looks like she took down the business listing and reposted it in order to start fresh.
In summary:
1. I was told by the office staff that I could pay extra (I can't remember the amount, it was like $20-30) to do a new high-tech eye exam that was more accurate and didn't require dilation, instead of the normal process, and I jumped at the opportunity
2. As soon as I finished that process (looking into a few machines and getting my eyeballs scanned) the doctor came and told me I still had to do the old-school version and get my eyes dilated (I was never told why, just that it was required)
3. After dilating my eyes, doing a manual exam, and reviewing the results of the "high-tech" one, she claimed that she saw no evidence of floaters, despite the fact that I've had them for many years, and they're large, persistent, and essentially impossible to miss - another doctor was able to spot them within a half second and showed me that they showed up very distinctly on the much less advanced equipment they were using at the time
Tl;dr I was upsold on an apparently inferior diagnostic imaging process under false pretenses and then treated by someone with dubious diagnostic skills
Dr. Tran, her staff, and her office are wonderful. I loved that booking an appointment online was easy. The office is also spacious and modern. When I arrived, I was greeted and checked in immediately. Dr. Tran herself is very nice and personable, and answered all of my questions thoroughly. The instrumentation and equipment is also very modern (e.g. VR for testing peripheral vision). Finally, all of my information and invoices was readily retrievable from an online portal. Best optometrist office ever!
I really didn't want to post this review, but it's come to the point where I need to go public and file a complaint with the Department of Consumer Affairs.
For context, I've worn glasses for 24 years and have had a high prescription since I was a teenager. My first experience with Looksie Optometry was about 3 or 4 years ago at their Polk Street office, and it was great. I discovered Jacques Marie Mage eyewear and ordered a pair that looked and fit perfectly, with the lenses edged exactly as I requested. I was a happy customer.
About 2 months ago, I returned expecting the same experience and ordered another pair of Jacques Marie Mage frames with my new prescription, totaling $1,000. Unfortunately, this turned into a nightmare.
From the moment I received the new glasses, they caused irritation behind my right ear. I had to return to the office for refitting, and after the second attempt, the irritation persisted. After the third fitting, the problem continued. Finally, on the fourth visit, a different optician adjusted the frames correctly, and the irritation stopped.
However, the frames then began to irritate my nose, leaving red marks. To make matters worse, I later found out that the optician who fixed the ear issue was on trial and had messed up my older pair of glasses--the pair I relied on when the new ones caused discomfort. I've attached photos showing how the legs of the older glasses were left crooked and asymmetrical.
When I emailed them on July 30th about these issues, they didn't respond. When I called to complain, the receptionist suggested, "Next time, speak up during the fitting if the glasses aren't comfortable," implying it was partially my fault. The irritation takes time to develop, and I was as vocal as possible during the fittings.
By the fifth fitting, I had spent over $100 on gas and tolls and countless hours getting to their office. Dr. Tran admitted, "I'm at a point where I kinda don't know what to do; maybe we can try adding nose pads." At one point, she even joked, "Maybe these are your going-out glasses." While I appreciate humor, this situation was anything but funny.
After the fifth fitting, the glasses still irritated my nose. At that point, I decided I wouldn't return for another fitting. Whether the issue was due to incompetence in fitting or a design flaw, I wanted a refund or exchange.
However, I was denied a refund or exchange, and the receptionist gave me these reasons:
1. "This is a built-to-order frame, so we cannot refund you." Whether the frame is built-to-order or mass-produced is irrelevant. A made-to-order product should fit even better given the price point.
2. "Your frame has been adjusted many times and cannot be returned." I had to return FIVE times for adjustments, wasting my time and energy. This isn't my fault.
3. "You tried on and chose the frame, so it's your responsibility." When trying on glasses, people primarily assess the style. As someone with a high prescription, the weight of the lenses and proper fitting are crucial, but you can't know the fit until the lenses are in and the glasses are on your face.
4. "The frame isn't defective; it just doesn't fit you personally." This response was the most infuriating, suggesting the problem was my fault.
In my 24 years of wearing glasses--metal, plastic, titanium, with or without nose pads--I've never experienced anything like this. Buying glasses is serious for people with high prescriptions like mine; we wear them for 16 hours a day. When a pair of frames doesn't fit and causes irritation, being told, "It just doesn't fit you personally," is like ordering a custom suit that doesn't fit because your body isn't "conforming."
I am extremely disappointed and angry. I had high hopes that this would continue to be my go-to place for glasses, but after flushing $1,000 down the drain, I won't be returning. I hope this post serves as a warning to others.
Amazing experience! Best optometrist I've ever had. The team is very helpful. Highly recommend!
Not a fan. They're terrible at follow-through. Took forever to actually email me my prescription after the visit. Then months later when I called with a question regarding the prescription (update the 30 day supply to 90 day) and spoke with a live person, they never got back to me. Who has time to chase these loose ends and remind them they need to do their job? Not me! As much as I want to support a women-owned local business, I'm just not impressed.
Had an exam today by Dr. Tran. It was my first time at Looksie. Dr. Tran has very cutting edge equipment that gave me, I think, the perfect prescription for my eyes. She explained something about my eyes that no optometrist has ever told me - and they should have. I thought the exam was thorough and I would highly recommend them to you if you are looking for a new optometrist.
