DeBoer Family Eye Care is hands down the best in the business, in all of NW IN! I have had glasses my whole life. I have been to many many eye Dr's in the area. None even come close to DeBoer! The staff are always friendly, professional & helpful. The Dr's are always patient & kind, allowing me all the time I need. They are always accommodating of my 5 children, & schedule us together so I don't have to make multiple trips. I am forever grateful for this wonderful business! I hope they continue for years to come!
This place nearly extorted me to get my pupillary distance with my eye exam, and while I was there I saw the front desk gossiping about a guy who called in to say he would be 10 mins late then they denied him service for being 12 late - it was empty
I'll start with the good: The Dr did a fine job doing my eye exam, but they also don't have the newer tech you see at chains that scans your eye for weak spots or tears it's strictly old school in the eye exam but he was 'OK' - but when I double checked I would be receiving my pupillary distance (to order VR lens inserts, which I mentioned while making the appointment), he was evasive and said talk to front desk.
They flat out told me they cannot give it to me, because they only use the 'new technology' where they put a measurer on the frames you are buying that they couldn't get to work for like 20 minutes. I commented that I'm sure they have the old binoculars style ones in a drawer that measure directly and would pay more to use it. They claimed they didn't and only have the new system.
At this point I felt very bait and switched, but just bought new frames to get SOME measurement to go home with. At this point I got snarky because I was effectively paying $350 for glasses I didn't particularly want or need (but I guess extras or nice),just to get the # that has been the norm for exams for decades AND which I told them I wanted when making the appt. They never said 'you'll have to buy frames here to get that #' and took my appointment anyway.
Finally when I'm checking out, the one sympathetic 'but just following policy lady' agreed to pull the old style ones out of the drawer... Low and behold they still exist! And it took 30 seconds vs 20+ minutes on the 'frame specific' ones -- so I got both #'s.
I -probably- could have declined the frames at this point but I figured it may be interesting to compare and it was only a few hours wages anyway and still didn't have the PD #'s in hand.. But the whole thing was just needlessly dramatic and deceptive. Before checking out the manager started trying to trap me with a lecture on how it's better and how I don't understand the business blah blah blah -- but I have NEVER had an issue getting my pupillary distance measured with or without frames because you NEED it for your RX if you go elsewhere for frames anyway.
That other guy who was late btw? All 4 women were talking derisively about him in earshot of me before he got there, and there were no other patients in office. It's unfathomable to me that the 2 extra minutes late meant he couldn't be seen.. maybe the Dr was going on break but they didn't say that, and I am certain he would have been willing to wait if that was the case.
A bunch of gossiping power hungry hens running the front desk make this business a 'never again, not if you paid me' based on what happened to me + how I saw them talking behind his back then pretend no one knew who he was and they had to ask around. They were complaining the whole time about the audacity to call in and expect to still be seen when they told him to keep coming... Then pretended to have no clue then get a manager to deny him.
The lady who finally got out the 'old style' PD measurement tool that took 30s or less to use when she realized what was going on was a blessing and I feel bad she has to work with all those other beasts, and the Dr seemed competent enough despite setting me up for a scam.
Normally I happily go out of my way and pay extra to support local businesses out of principal. In this case I'd say go anywhere else, even Walmart, and you will have a better experience.
Absolutely do not go here unless you are ready to literally argue for an hour to get a PD reading with your eye glasses RX.
If you plan to buy frames... Well you may have an OK outcome but you'll be supporting a staff that clearly has a culture of disrespecting and arguing with customers.
What are the odds the only two customers (marks) there that day with at least 5 staff on hand would be enraged by their collective behavior before leaving?
A+ for Doctors - F for front desk staff
Doctors are Fantastic! Very sweet, patient and knowledgeable. Great with my kiddos as well. My entire family has been going here for years.
Front desk women is another story!
Rude, short, act like you are putting them out for being there. Even got an eye roll once for asking for my script to be printed so i could order my glasses online. Why on Gods green earth would a business/doctor hire women with these personalities?! They could potentially ruin their business? Especially when the doctors are far from the way this women is. Not a good first impression when visiting. Get a new front desk woman, obviously customer service is far from her specialty.
Went in for an eye exam & that was fine. However, the billing is not correct. It was billed as a comprehensive exam as opposed to an annual exam. When I contacted the billing dept I was told that's how it was coded by the Dr & there is nothing that can be done. Which means we pay for an exam that was always covered until this year. We will NEVER go back there. I've been going there for the last 20 years.... Never again.
I am so disappointed. I have been to this office over and again for almost 15 years. The doctors are kind, patient and helpful. I went in with a problem and a certain lady on the staff was not helpful at all. After I had to repeatedly ask for an appointment to get new glasses, I already have a script from them, they suddenly had no appointments for a month! Not one person can take my order for a new pair of glasses for over a month? She was rude, unwilling to help me and then stonewalled me for making an appointment. Why? So disappointing. I will not refer anyone here anymore and I will tell everyone about my experience. It was unnecessary and so pointless. I hate being able to go local because of the pompous attitudes of the staff. Up north I go I guess.
I've used DeBoer's for years. The staff and doctors are always so pleasant, professional and kind. This visit there was a mix-up with my frame order and insurance coverage. The good folks at DeBoer's made it right immediately. They also spent a lot of extra time asking me how I use my glasses and making sure I got a durable frame that both feels good and looks good on me.
I had the worst experience of my life here with Dr. Molenaar. Things felt off from the beginning of the appt but I really needed a new script after having been rescheduled at another practice so I shrugged it off. He was agitated and rude to me during my exam, repeatedly telling me I didn't understand the tests he was doing. I have been getting eye exams for 30+ years.
At the end he declared I didn't need a higher script, just my astigmatism adjusted. This didn't align with the issues I have been having. I questioned that as, sitting there with my current glasses, I felt the letters on the wall could be much clearer. He marched me out to the hallway to try tests with my current glasses on, including looking at street signs. When I didn't understand his instructions on where to look (he was standing in front of me, blocking my view while telling me to look out of the window, being very agitated still) he again told me "you aren't getting it" "you don't understand" instead of helping me.
He determined he would bump my script after all, rewrote it and told me I could shop for frames. I picked the perfect pair but then discovered I had chosen a frame I wasn't allowed to purchase. I had to be part of a certain insurance plan to buy them. That was very disappointing so I asked for my prescription so I could shop elsewhere. I paid for my exam and when I was handed my script, it was missing numbers it usually has.
I questioned the staff on the missing numbers. They said "he determined you don't have an astigmatism on the right eye." I asked if that's something that can resolve completely as I've had it for some time. They couldn't tell me. They then saw he had written the astigmatism numbers in my chart, but in parenthesis. They said "that usually means he feels it's optional. Do you want us to add it in?" I said I had no idea, did I really need it or not? He didn't tell me any of this and I didn't want to leave, order glasses using this new script from another location, and discover the script was no good.
He was with another patient and I chose to wait for him. A few min later he came out agitated again. I explained I had questions about the script and that the woman had taken my chart. He left with her and I could hear them discussing it. I stepped into the doorway and explained I just needed to know why it was omitted now if I've always needed it before.
He said "Well I guess we need to add it in since the customer is always right! And we wouldn't want you to be unhappy!" I said "I'm asking because I've always had a number there." At this point he's crossing off the script he's written now for the SECOND time and is rewriting it while talking. He was saying "If we change this, we have to change this number. And then you may have headaches. Most people do. But we can do it! Since you want it SO badly. And we can make them, but then if you don't like it, it's all on YOU, and it will be YOUR problem."
I said "We were just asking because you wrote the number up here (I pointed at my chart) but didn't include it in the script."
That's when he rounded on me and yelled in my face "What *I* write in this chart is NONE of your business! I can write whatever I want!!"
I was SHOCKED and immediately said "You don't get to talk to me that way! I'm demanding a refund!" I took my old script out and went to the front desk. It was CRICKETS at the front desk--there were SEVERAL women working and nobody was moving a muscle. I asked if he talks to all of his patients this way and nobody would make eye contact with me or acknowledge me.
They had to get a separate woman to come up to refund my eye exam money and she was confused and had no idea what was going on. I kept asking if he's usually this way and yells at patients and I only received a mumbled "no". Nobody apologized to me, defended me, offered me a solution, attempted to calm me down, nothing. I had a friend with me who was witness to all of this. I finally got my refund and was able to leave and would never recommend this practice to anyone.
The doctors are fine, but the staff is hideously rude and disrespectful. Definitely not worth my time or money to deal with it.
Updated response to the owner: You are incorrect. The last time I went to De Boer eyecare was with a family member whose services I paid for and thus dealt with the disgusting treatment from your front desk staff. Your decision not to address that speaks for itself.
