I had a disappointing experience at Costco Optical as a first-time contact lens wearer. My appointment started about 40 minutes late. Once I was seen, the optometrist spent roughly 10 minutes with me, told me I likely wouldn't be able to insert contacts because of my long nails, and asked what contacts I wanted to try even though I was there specifically because I'm new to contacts and needed guidance.
I was handed off to the front desk staff to practice insertion/removal while the doctor moved on to another patient. I successfully inserted the lenses, but the doctor did not return to review fit, explain options, or clearly discuss wear schedule/care. I left with a case and solution, but without knowing the lens brand/type or whether they were daily vs. two-week lenses. My prescription also wasn't finalized at checkout, and I had to call afterward to get basic details so I could order.
The lenses themselves seem fine, but the overall experience felt rushed and lacked the education and support a first-time contact patient should receive (and that is standard everywhere?? so that's not my expectation exclusively?). I won't return for future optical appointments.
First and last time I will use Costco to order glasses. My initial experience was positive. Helpful staff, ordered my frames. Went to pickup and they were the completely wrong glasses. Couldn't reorder the correct ones because by this time I was no longer covered by insurance, plus I didn't even see the original pair I'd ordered the first time. Wasted so much time, trips across the city, copay for the exam... all to end up with no glasses. I'm furious.
I don't normally leave reviews for things, but this optical department went above and beyond! The staff I talked to both times I went in were extremely friendly and helpful. I was looking for a specific pair of glasses that they no longer carried, and an employee helped me find them. When picking them up, I had trouble transferring my prescription, and the guy was very understanding and found a way to make it work. I even went back to slightly tweak the fit (I had wanted the backs of the frames to be bent a little more to keep them at the bridge of my nose), and the girl at the counter was super nice and fixed them for me in about a minute. I'm very grateful for the help, and I love my new glasses!
Decent selection and quick turnaround on glasses. The doctor was friendly and efficient. Cody is adorable and has the best customer service as well as input. I'm so indecisive on glasses, and he helped so much! He also fitted them to my face on pick up for the perfect fit.
A few days ago my better half and I went into Costco around 10:30 a.m., specifically to the optical department in search of glasses. There was a couple and one woman ahead of us so the better half was a bit hesitant about how long things would take.
The employee behind the counter, greeted us, we told her what we were looking for, she explained the layout of the store and off we went to try on glasses. We figured we'd give it a go and head out if the wait time was too long.
We picked our frames fairly quickly so we did have some wait time. I would guesstimate about 30 minutes total, but let me tell you, my husband and I were so very impressed with Bre's efficiency. She was the only employee there behind the counter, typing, scanning, greeting, measuring, answering phones, answering customer's questions. She was absolutely amazing! She was efficient, she was polite, she was soft spoken, she was professional and she never hesitated or lost her focus. She answered questions, gave her opinion, joked, and was unflinching when we handed her three insurance cards (none which helped by the way). Honestly, we were so impressed by how well she handled everything.
I don't know how glasses from Costco will work out for us, but I do know that they have one heck of an employee there. I hope that Costco pays her well and I hope they hire someone to assist her. Truthfully, she was quite capable of running the whole place by herself and if she is, she needs to be compensated and compensated well!
I will update once I receive my glasses, but so far, with Bre's assistance in ordering our glasses, it was a smooth process and I highly recommend going to see them.
Be aware of the experience you may encounter at the Costco optical department on the corner of Emerson avenue and county line road in Indianapolis Indiana.
Elena one of the employees working behind the counter of the optical department is so rude and dismissive!
She was unhelpful when I asked her about my insurance she said we don't accept your insurance I said online it says you do she said well we just started accepting it this year but it's difficult to get it to go through so you'll have to pay full price and then submit a receipt then she left me alone turned her back on me and began to act like she was doing something there was one customer there & two other employees one employee leaning against the counter and one employee stocking none of them attempted to help either of us or wanted to engage with us it was an extremely unpleasant experience. I left there feeling unvalued. But the saddest part is I'd been excited for a week to come to Costco to look at glasses and decide on a pair. I left deciding that I would never come back to this Costco optical department in Greenwood Indiana again for glasses. I wonder if Costco optical department is having trouble finding intelligent customer service motivated employees? I hope not because they seem to have invested a lot of money into a beautiful optical department with a nice selection and competitive pricing and that would be sad for the organization as a whole and for people who want to become members
I had an emergency where my contact lens ripped while I was 300 miles from home. I wear a unique prescription that must be ordered, the staff here were extremely helpful in getting me a replacement pair of contacts the same day!! Thank you again so much to Sarah!!
I love the doctor and her staff, they're so sweet and fun! I also love the employees who help with ordering glasses, I have had almost every employee help me or my family members order glasses and they are always so helpful!
