This is the same Dr. Murray who used to practice in South Portland. He was disciplined by the Board of Optometry in Maine in 2022.
He gave me the wrong contacts two times. (So, in all, three trips to pick up contacts) When I saw him a couple years later, he asked why I hadn't gotten the contacts through him. I told him I just took the numbers of the last (correct) boxes and got them through mail order. He told me (falsely) that ordering contact lenses by mail order was illegal. He then gave me two boxes of contacts at the end of the exam. One of them was wrong.
He was never on time for appointments. If anyone showed up at the office as a walk-in, he just took them next, regardless of when the next patient was scheduled. He told me this himself.
He has a nice personality, but the inconvenience and the sloppy office practices were the reasons I decided to go elsewhere.
I had an amazing experience at this business Wednesday morning. I had need of an ophthalmologist. Dr. Murry introduced himself to me,and wanted me to explain my dilemma. He listened very attentively, then what really impressed he took me in on the spot no appointment and checked my eyes, confirmed I did need to see a surgeon,he then on his own got on the phone to an ophthalmologist and got things moving for me. I will never forget this act of compassion, and kindness. P.S.he didn't get me in because he had no patience he did ,but saw a need. He and his wife were very nice.
This guy is a joke! I can't believe he's still practicing! First of all you can never get a hold of him and his mailbox is full when you finally do and get an appointment for an eye exam it takes place in a small very cluttered room with two eye machines that look like they are from the 80's and the door is open so the people in the " waiting room" can hear and see your exam and the exam literature took less than five minutes and took him 20 to make out a written prescription no computer at all! I also watched him and his wife/receptionist sit in his car scoffing down fast food a lady was waiting in her car for him to finish and unlock the door for her apartment I was next again door wide open and the patient the Dr and I were all engaging in conversation when he came out and I'm waiting to go in I sat there for 30+ minutes while he talked with us! Finally it was my turn I never witnessed him washing his hands at all even after he ate and had his fingers in the other woman's eye he used the same instruments on me without cleaning them or opening a new one! All I could smell was his foody fingers! It was so disgusting! I thought it was done and could leave but...Then his wife came in and talked about the fast food they just ate and then went back and forth about an upcoming vacation and I tried several times to excuse myself because I was already there for over an hour for no reason so finally I said I have to go! I'm gonna post this now but I have so much more to say about the Glasses and the perception! I was told that I should bring this up to the licensing board! I seriously can't fathom how he's even still in practice! He's a quack!!
My neighbor went in for contacts in January 2024 and 6 months later still no contacts. He did her eye exam 2 times because he lost all the first information, both exams different results. $450 and 6 months later still no contacts. She asked for her money back he said he didn't have any money and he books were all messed up. Stay clear of this place.
Benefit of the doubt gone wrong. Absolutely, never again. I was new to the whole eye glasses thing. That is, it was my first time in an exam and getting glasses. I made that clear to them. The assistant told me that she couldn't tell if my insurance would pay for the exam, but that most do. I was later informed by many experienced people, that's called a lie. That they can tell me right then and there if it would be covered by my insurance. I was rushed through the exam at which throughout, I told him he was going to way fast. Even I know eyes take a moment to focus! The prescription was worthless and now I am out $1,200 ( @ $200+ for the eye exam) and a $1,000 in glasses. I refuse to pay over $200 for a worthless exam. I can't even begin to express how upset I was and how cheated I felt. No follow up whatsoever, other than repeated attempts to bill me for the exam fee. One would think, a new customer that isn't paying his exam fee, that maybe that would warrant a phone call. Imagine that! And to think he sent the bill to collections without any thought how much he has directly contributed to putting me out so much time and money. I decided to pay and be done with his nonsense. Smug.
Went in for a case of watery eyes. Door was open but no one was in there. Sat for 5 mins and a older guy walks in, goes in the other room to set his keys down and asks me if I have been greeted, I said no. He said come on in, a crowded room with boxes and junk all over the place. Still hasn't asked who I am, or why I am there. Does a quick 3 minute exam, never once has he washed his hands or put on gloves. Says, your eyes are fine, perfect actually, which I already knew. Says I have over producing tear ducts. Says he can plug them with chologen plugs. I ask what it all costs, he says the eye exam was 175...which I never even asked for, and all in just under 500.. I agree to have it done. He takes some tools out of a drawer, not packaged not even cleaned, but uses a alcohol wipe to wipe them down and then proceeds to do the plugs. At the time, I was just thinking if this fixes it, GREAT! Been about a month of dealing with this .. it lasted less then a hour. He even said it could last 6 months or more. Did I go back? No way! No one should ever go there!
Exam room was cluttered with junk and surfaces appeared dingy. It took nearly 2 months to get the contact lenses I ordered on the date of my appointment. Dr Murray was polite but the exam started 30 minutes late.
I am new to the area and was told this was my only option besides Walmart. I went to pick up my glasses. I was told they'd be ready in a week but it was 2 weeks. I expressed a problem with one lens and was told not to judge it so soon.
I've been wearing glasses for 60 yrs. I think I can tell wether there might be an issue or not. She said, "no one ever adjusts immediately to new lenses." That's incorrect. When the frame is right and the prescription is right and they are made properly one can often just put them on and go. I've had that experience 2 dozen times in my life. I was so offended by her patronizing lecture. I said I would take them home but I'll be going back for a refund because something is just wrong with them. She never had me sit at the desk, did not eyeball the fit or offer adjustments.... All around unprofessional and patronizing. I will have to travel the hour to my old optometrist now.
