Michigan Eye Institute

My first time there and everything went well. Desk staff was friendly. Paige was awesome. The lady that put my drops in to dilate my eyes wasn't as friendly and the Dr. was good. I didn't know that they were going to dilate my eyes, it was a rough ride home. I was given the shades, which was helpful, but still very blurry.

The worst billing policy and experience I have ever encountered. They will charge you the full amount of your visit if you have not met your deductible for the year. I have a $40 co-pay, I was charged $198.49 at my visit that I was not made aware of ahead of time. When I asked, they stated a new policy by their superiors. Now that they billed out to my insurance, I only owe my $40 co-pay and now have a credit at MEI for the remaining of the $198.49. The Lapeer office refused to help me get the credit back and stated I have to go through an outside billing department that they use, but do not directly deal with. (However they did not have any problem taking my money at the time of my visit.) I could not get through to billing, the call operator shared they were having issues getting through to billing. She transferred me to the front desk at Lapeer office. The Lapeer office worker, Patty, refused to assist and shared that I had to talk to billing that is through another company. I shared they were having issues and could not get through. She shared you will be able to, We can't help with anything billing. I asked for more information on why they would collect the full amount, knowing I have a copay of $40 and now I have the hassle of getting my remaining money back from the $198.49 I paid. She stated it was a new policy put in place by the higher ups, she could not provide any other explanation. I submitted a request to have someone contact me, I will update on how they further handle this.

For service and eye care, I would give MEI five stars. For their billing department, I would give them zero stars. I am currently being harassed with payment for service that my insurance covers. I even called my insurance to make sure. Last time I talked to billing, they had not even billed my insurance! And they keep sending me the bill!

I recently had my new patient visit at the Michigan eye Institute, Lapeer location. And I have a physical disability which comes with it's own umbrella of issues and can make eye tests quite challenging in my case so a big shout out and thanks to my eye, technician Jenna and her colleagues for their Amazing amount of patience, Care and professionalism working with me and my mom to get me through my eye test the best They could to provide the best information about the health of my eyes for my doctor Dr. Keoleian MD. Who was also extremely professional with his Exam and assessment of my eye health, but Most importantly address me as an individual did not look at me or treat me differently because I use a wheelchair. Unfortunately, That has not been the case with some of my past medical experiences so I greatly appreciate that and I think it should be highlighted whenever possible. I definitely plan to return to the Michigan eye Institute Lapeer location For my yearly eye exam!

From the front desk, staff that did testing, and Dr. Brian, everything was very professional and nice and they all were especially kind to my adult child with Autism. They explained things to me and I'm very grateful.

The pre-testing assistant, Bella, was outstanding--incredibly knowledgeable, genuinely caring, and highly efficient. Dr. Keoleian, providing a professional and straightforward diagnosis of my mother's cataract development. I highly recommend this facility.

I will start be stating that the personal that handled my exams and tests were very friendly and helpful. Although we found as well as other patients the wait times for each visit to be from 1 to 2 hours was way to long and had to reschedule other appointments and obligations for those days. Second; we asked at every appointment for a break down of what we would have to pay or not covered under Medicare and our supplement insurance. Each visit we were told they would review it at the next visit. The day before the surgery we were told that it was up to us to contact Medicare and our supplement insurance to find out. After the surgery the next appointment we were hit with a bill. Beware Medicare patients that Medicare dose not cover the "Refraction Exam" and therefore your supplement insurance may not cover it as well.
