Ophthalmic Associates: Coats Thomas D MD

My experience with Dr. Coates was nothing short of excellent. He is very thorough, professional and knowledgeable. I have know Dr. Coats for many, many years. And would recommend him in a minute. The reason I gave this low rating is the optical people on staff, I would not recommend them at all. Very rude on the phone, and this wasnt the first time. They insisted that they informed me my glasses were ready, which I told them I could prove that they did not on the specific date. Along with the fact I had called the day after to check on the status of my lenses..

Wish I could have taken my mom to see Dr. Coats since he came highly recommended. Unfortunately the front office staff would not set up the appointment. They insist on collecting the patients social security number over the phone even though there are other safer ways to identify patients for scheduling purposes. I offered to give the social security number when in person but they still refused to set up the appointment. How sad :( I called the back of my mom's insurance card and it turns out that she is fully covered at Vision Works for the exam and glasses. Yay!

Dr Coates is very competent and efficient. His front desk staff badly needs training in customer service and insurance billing.

I was a exactly 17 minutes late (they have a 15 minute late grace) for my appointment and while that technically merits a cancellation and reschedule, giving me a break would have been the kind thing to do considering my insurance was running out in a day. I was in the office the day prior for a "problem" appointment and today was the follow up. They still turned me away. I'm not surprised because the day prior, at my previous appointment, It struck me how unfriendly both the nurse and receptionist were. I thought, what a miserable office when I left. Today's cancellation--even when I asked to see the manager explaining my circumstances--confirmed the negative office. Unkind people. When my vision plan returns, I won't be going back to an office who obviously doesn't really give a hoot about their patients well being. I'm sure they could've worked with me if they really did care.

I went to this facility in 2020 and swore I'd never go back due to unfriendly staff but because I am limited to whom my insurance is accepted by I had no choice and again, same unfriendly ladies working the front desk. The lady doing my exam excused herself in the middle of my exam to answer a phone call and the woman in the next room was having a conversation with the patient and I could hear every word she was saying (he doesn't smoke, he drinks on occasion, I even heard which medications he was on). Completely unacceptable. Never again!

Terrible. Warning! Do not go to this practice. This doctor has a major attitude. All my family members and friends went to the same doctor. He has a very short fuse for no reason. Everyone of them switched and no longer a goes to him. He may even be a racists. The faster they get rid of this guy the better. He probably needs a sign outside his office that says whites only. Even those days are over, this guy never got over it.

He has been my eye doctor for only a few years but, he has always been professional. A year ago I had an issue with my eye and I called and he took me 20 minutes later! I never had any issues with the staff but, I arrived on time.
