I think this is my first review ever, so take that for what it's worth. They clearly have good medical schools in South Africa, and I am pleased with Dr. Matzkin's technical skills. But it stops there. His staff seems afraid of him, and it is not a welcoming environment at all. The appointments with Matzkin are not at all what they should be. You are to sit there and keep your mouth shut unless asked a specific question. Even if you are educated about your condition and have relevant questions, they are not welcomed. There is just no bed-side manner at all.
I had a procedure done on each eye. During the first procedure I told him I was having pain and he was dismissive and told me I shouldn't be and seemed irritated that I told him I was in pain. When I went for the procedure in the second eye, I told the nurse anesthetist about my experience. She gave me a frustrated look as if to say, "yes, nobody here likes him very much," and apologized and said she would ensure I had no pain during the second procedure on the second eye.
In summary, Dennis is a good surgeon and technically capable, but he needs to learn there is more to it than that to be a truly effective physician. My advice to the reader: keep walking and find another surgeon with good reviews and lots of experience with what you need done. If you end up going to Matzkin, you can't say you haven't been warned...
I saw Dr Matzkin a little over 1.5 years ago for a refractive lens exchange with premium multi-focal IOL lenses(so that I would not have to wear glasses for distance or reading). Whether I had near perfect results or not I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND him to family or friends. If you want a doctor where everything is explained well and there is a willingness to entertain your questions regarding the procedure and expected results.....this is not the doctor for you. Dr. Matzkin "puts up" with your first question, but if you have a second or third....you are labeled a "worrier" or he seems to feel his knowledge is being questioned. Dr. Matzkin says he welcomes questions but his behavior says otherwise. He actually said to me "you're going to need a little hand holding " when I wanted to know when I would adjust to my new vision. Dr. Matzkin OVER sells and UNDER delivers. Dr. Matzkin's staff are not rude, but also not friendly....no one actually seems happy to be there or proud of their job. If I could do it over again, I would HAVE the procedure, BUT I WOULD NOT HAVE Dr. Matzkin do it....even if the results were perfect AND there was a million dollar giveaway included!! I dreaded all my appointments because of how I felt afterwards. I am not saying that Dr. Matzkin is not skilled or knowledgeable, I'm just saying I wouldn't go to him again. There are too many other GOOD choices for an ophthalmologist out there, and I would advise--->make another choice.
I've been seeing Dr. Matzkin for several years due to a medication that I take that requires monitoring vision and thorough testing every few months.
He and his staff are always professional and competent. I am amazed every time I go to the office how smoothly the staff work together. They are always busy, with lots of patients, but I have never felt "rushed" as each staff member takes their time with each patient to provide proper care.
I have had nothing but positive experiences with Dr. Matzkin and his entire Team of Professionals. A well organized and thorough exam with friendly people who care. I have been a patient for several years and I would not trust anyone as much as Allied Eye and Dr. Matzkin. I am retired from the optical profession and have seen many practices. There is none better!
Thanks to Dr. Matzkin, Dr. Herron, and the staff at Allied Eye, my cataracts are gone and my vision is corrected! After removing my cataracts, Dr. Matzkin used the Vivity toric lens to treat my astigmatism and now I can read small print without readers and have clear vision for distance. Not only did I receive excellent care from Dr. Matzkin and Dr. Herron, the entire staff was extremely professional and always treated me with the utmost kindness and respect. I would definitely recommend Allied Eye to anyone needing eye care.
I'm very grateful to Dr. Matzkin and his team of professionals. I went in for one medical issue and they discovered another. All my life, I've suffered a lot of eye pain witvout any understanding of why. Over the years, I've been misdiagnosed several times. Then I visited this office and now, I'm doing well and without pain! I'm very happy with the care I've received from Allied Eye, Dr. Matzkin and his caring staff. Three minor surgeries later and I am seeing and feeling much better! Thank you!!
I had RK surgery early 90's that left me with one eye near sighted and one far and with terrible halo effects at night. Dr Matzkin assured me he could get me to 20/20 vision by doing a lens replacement in my right eye. He was very convincing. After the surgery my vision went right back to the way it was before the surgery. And the halo effect at night was much worse, only now I can see my cornea and all the RK incisions during certain lighting at night, making it extremely hard to drive at night. When I went back for my post surgery appts he acted like nothing was wrong and referred me to an optometrist for vision correction! Now, nine years later, I have started to have horrible stabbing pains in my eye and it is very red. My optometrist isn't sure what is wrong but stated that I should not have had a lens replaced when my cornea was already unstable from RK surgery. I have an upcoming appt with a new ophthalmologist so not sure what is going on yet. I am really praying this man didn't ruin my eye!!
After some research, it appeared Dr. Dennis Matzkin had some great reviews as a cataract surgeon. His team at Allied Eye were very polite and efficient. Visits to his office proceeded briskly with very little wait time. They provided all necessary information in a concise manner. Dr. Matzkin explained the procedure and the options and provided an opportunity to ask questions. Prior to the procedure, he advised that with my history of lasik surgery and astigmatism, there could not be complete assurance that the implanted lenses would correct my vision totally. Apparently, there must be adjustments made with the implanted lenses or in the implant procedure to account for prior lasik surgery and astigmatism. Whatever Dr. Matzkin had to do, he did it very well. My post-surgery eye exams indicated that I had better 20-15 vision which is better than 20-20 vision. I do not have to wear corrective lenses or use reading glasses. It was a fantastic outcome.
