The entire staff is very friendly and very professional. Dr. Dwyer is great. She explains everything so well that you really understand everything that is going on with your vision. I have complete confidence in her. Absolutely recommend her.
The staff in this office are all wonderful, but the doctor and her bedside manner need serious work.
In early September I sustained an injury to my eye when my 80lb dog stepped on it. I was lying on my side in bed and she stepped on the outer corner, pushing down toward the inner. From that moment on I experienced blurriness and light sensitivity, and only in that eye. There was also pain for the first couple of weeks, but not on the surface of the eye. It was in the inner corner, around where the tear duct is.
Assuming the cornea might have been scratched, I waited a couple weeks for it to heal. Some symptoms did improve, including the pain, but the blurriness and light sensitivity remained. I first saw an optometrist who tried to attribute my symptoms to two completely unrelated issues that would affect both eyes, one of which I had history with over 30 years ago and knew these were not the symptoms I was experiencing. She did notice that eye was very dry.
My pcp referred me to Dr Dwyer when I requested an ophthalmologist, and I got an appointment for late November- almost three months after the incident. After the staff performed all the tests and scans, Dr Dwyer came in and looked in my eyes. She mentioned the dry eye and explained that I had a rapidly progressing cataract that had nothing to do with the injury I had sustained. I was told I'd be unable to see out of that eye within a couple of months.
This made no sense to me because I was there when the injury happened, there had been no change over the nearly three months since the incident, and what about the dry eye? I started to question it with a slight bit of tension in my voice. She cut me off to say a cornea scratch would have healed by now. I tried to explain that I was not concerned with that but rather the effects of a blunt trauma, but she again cut me off and asked...
"Why are you being so unkind to me?"
I was shocked. I was only frustrated. There were no unkind thoughts or words. She said "it was the delivery."
After some further exchange where I tried to state I was simply trying to advocate for myself and that she should not only listen to my experiences but also be prepared for frustration when giving patients bad news, I left, still struggling to believe that she had made it all about her feelings instead of actively listening to her patient.
Needless to say, she was only half right. You see, there's this thing called a "traumatic cataract" that is literally caused by - you guessed it - a blunt trauma to the eye. It is not rapidly progressing. The dryness is also likely due to damage done to the tear duct, not something that a "rapidly progressing cataract" would produce.
It took me a second to figure out why "unkind" was the word used, and I believe it's simply because she was being challenged. Bottom line is all the textbooks and labs cannot replace the experiences of the patient, and nobody can know everything. It's important to listen and respect what your patient has to say, not to cut them off and prioritize your feelings over their treatment.
If you're someone who prefers to be involved in your own medical care, find another ophthalmologist. Maybe someday she will have had more experience with dealing with patients, but if she keeps this up, she might not have any.
My family and I absolutely LOVE Dr. Dwyer! She is kind, intelligent, and a wonderful surgeon. I was so impressed with her breadth of medical knowledge, especially when it came to rare diseases such as autoimmune diseases and how they can affect the eyes. She has always gone above and beyond spending time with me and making sure I was well taken care of. We are so lucky to know her and we all feel very comfortable with her care. If you're looking for a compassionate ophthalmologist, look no further! We cannot recommend her enough!
Dr. Dwyer is a true gem in the world of ophthalmology. Her expertise and compassionate care are unmatched. From the moment I stepped into her office, I felt at ease knowing I was in capable hands. She took the time to thoroughly explain my condition and treatment options, ensuring I felt empowered in my healthcare decisions. The entire staff was friendly and professional, making each visit a pleasure. I wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone seeking top-notch eye care!
Dr. Dwyer and her staff gave me excellent care and were so kind and thoughtful, taking the time to answer my questions and concerns. I felt at ease on my first visit and was reassured in her evaluation of my eye situation. I plan to have follow up visits and a possible eye surgery and feel very confident in Dr. Dwyer's skill as a surgeon.
Dr Dwyer is phenomenal she did my last cataract surgery and then moved to her own practice. Her staff are amazing they give you the small town feel and make you feel very comfortable. Dr Dwyer is very knowledgeable and a excellent surgeon. She is definitely worth me driving 60 miles to her practice and I will see her again next year.
Annual care and catarat surgery
My cataract surgery was the easiest experience! Dr. Dwyer prepared me with information ahead of the surgery, prayed with me just before surgery, and she talked to me through the surgery, explaining and encouraging. Her office staff is as kind and friendly as she is and helped with testing and the insurance maze! Our whole family sees her and we're so grateful to have found her to care for us.
Dr. Dwyer is absolutely amazing! Her kindness, compassion and expertise all go so far beyond the norm. Compassion like Dr. Dwyer's is a lost art, but she has restored my faith not only in the medical field, but also in humanity. Thank you so much for your wonderful care, Dr. Dwyer!!
