On 10-21-25, I made an online appointment for a vision exam at North Shore Eye Health and Wellness on 10-22-25 (the following day). This was to be my first visit to this office, as the eye doctor that I had been seeing for the previous two years had moved from another provider to North Shore. Since I received no confirmation text or email after scheduling the appointment, I called the office to make sure that they had a record of my appointment. The person answering the phone that day did confirm the appointment, and then asked if I could text her a copy of the front and back of my insurance card...which I promptly did. A short time later, I received a text back thanking me for sending those images.
When I arrived for my appointment the next day, one of the women at the front desk had me fill out some paperwork stating that I was responsible for payment of any fees that were not covered by insurance. This is common practice in the medical/dental/vision services, so I had no problem with signing...especially since I knew what my vision insurance covered and I knew that North Shore had my insurance card on file that I had sent the day before.
After my exam was finished, I was met in the waiting area by two women who told me that the office did not accept any vision insurance plans. I was stunned. The women said they billed their services as "medical" services and asked if I had my medical insurance card. I gave them the card, knowing very well that the vision coverage that I had through my medical insurer was quite limited. I told them that they had every opportunity to tell me that they did not accept vision insurance BEFORE my exam, but they failed to do so...even having seen the insurance card I had sent them the day before. At this point, a woman who identified herself as the office manager came out to the waiting area where I was speaking with the other women. I told her that what they had done was very dishonest, and asked why they didn't look at the insurance card I had sent them the day before and tell me that they wouldn't accept this insurance before I went in for my exam. Her answer was something along the lines of there being very many patients coming in every day and they likely just didn't have the time to do so. Hearing this, I told her exactly what I thought of their deceptive billing practices and informed her that there was no way that I would ever return to their office again. Within 5 weeks of the exam date, I received two bills from North Shore totaling $124.00. An exam at the previous provider I had been using to see the same doctor would have cost me $39.00 with my vision insurance plan.
While I have no complaint with the specific doctor I saw, I will never visit North Shore Eye Health and Wellness again due to what I consider their very deceptive billing practices. Reading through the other reviews here, I can see that I'm not the first person to experience this, and I suspect I won't be the last.
I cannot speak highly enough about the care I received at North Shore Eye and Wellness and more specifically, Dr. Stephanie Engebretson.
I recently had an eye emergency pop up after hours on the weekend. After getting turned away from urgent care on Saturday evening, I called the clinic's emergency line and left a message for their on call Doctor.
Dr. Engebretson returned my call within 5 minutes and gave me guidance on how to manage my symptoms for the night, while assuring me that she would be able to see me in person the following day.
She went out of her way to meet me at the clinic on a Sunday, correctly diagnosed my issue, and provided immediate relief both in office and with a prescription I picked up an hour later.
Eye emergencies can feel extremely debilitating. The prompt informative care I received at North Shore Eye Health and Wellness at a time I would not have expected to be able to see such a specialist, will have me recommending their services for years to come.
A great experience...from the front desk on your arrival to walking out the door. Dr Ross has a great team and he is the best eye doctor our family has worked with. Very personable, latest technology, knows his craft extremely well. We had an amazing doctor in Middleton...Dr Ross is on another level. Bottom line, you are in very good hands.
Dr Ross and Lori Lee are the Greatest! I have been so happy with my service and glasses! I would recommend North Shore Eye Health 100%. Loved the trunk show and found my next pair of awesome glasses. Thanks!!!
We had a great experience with NorthShore Therapy Clinic. After working with Tony for the 12 weeks, we saw improvements in our child's vision, helping their reading significantly. Tony was prepared and always on time, exercises were clearly explained. Very thankful for the improvement we saw.
