Had my eye exam using my insurance WellPoint. My visit was great. Everyone was so helpful and pleasant. I will continue to visit Dr G. Had my exam picked out glasses and didn't pay a cent. My ophthalmologist would've charge $50 for my prescription and his office employees were not very nice.
2/10/26 - I'm visiting my parents who live in the area and thought it would be convenient to schedule my annual eye exam here, especially since I am about to run out of contacts. Huge mistake. Never in my life have I experienced something this dismissive, rigid, and frankly audacious.
I drove over 30 minutes for a 9:00 AM appointment. I do not know this area well and everything is so far away. When I arrived, the building looked run down and like it had not been updated in decades. There was no clear signage and no obvious front entrance. I would have arrived around 9:06 or 9:07, but I spent extra time just trying to figure out where the front door even was. A staff member and a doctor arrived around the same time as I did. They saw me. No one offered help. No one pointed me toward the front desk. Apparently basic courtesy is not part of the culture here.
I checked in at 9:08. A younger male staff member acknowledged me politely. The older woman at the front desk did not greet me at all. After I said hello and told her I was here for my appointment, she immediately told me they would not see me and that I needed to reschedule. No explanation up front. No attempt to help. Just shut down.
Her tone was cold, dismissive, and oddly confrontational. I was then told I was expected to arrive 15 minutes early to fill out forms. This was never clearly communicated to me. They had already called me in advance to collect my insurance information and could have easily mentioned that if I didn't arrive 15 minutes ahead, they would not see me, no exceptions. They also could have called me right at 9:00 AM to let me know they would need to reschedule. Lastly, they could have sent the forms electronically like most medical offices do in 2026.
When I asked if they had a 5-to-10-minute courtesy window, she said yes, a 10-minute courtesy. I arrived at 9:08. By their own rule, I was within that window. Yet she argued with me instead, insisting everything would be pushed back if they saw me.
The irony is that the time she spent explaining why I could not be seen was long enough for me to have completed those basic forms. The office was empty. There was one other person waiting. Staff were still arriving. I'm pretty sure the doctor who was supposed to see me arrived around the same time I did. Yet somehow the policy was enforced with absolute rigidity toward me and zero flexibility on their end.
What became very clear is that this office acts like it can get away with this behavior. I do not know if they are the only optometrist in town or simply used to older patients/retirees, but the audacity to speak to new patients this way suggests they think people have no other options.
That may work for those who have all day to sit in a waiting room to fill out forms that don't take longer than 2 minutes to fill out. The outdated systems, the rigid rules, and the front desk attitude all scream old town mentality. There was no chance I was going to reschedule after being treated this way. My mother, who is an existing patient, will also not be returning. Honestly, I should probably thank them for saving me from wasting money on contacts and services here. If you value your time and have respect for yourself, do yourself a favor and drive to Phoenix or fly literally anywhere else. Because this level of behavior in 2026 is insane.
Everyone at Alvernon Optical is always so friendly. Dr Schulte is very knowledgeable, professional and very kind. Dina is awesome!! She is always so nice, helpful, and so fun to visit with!! My husband has been going here for many years and said you really should go here!! Hands down the best!! Wouldn't go anywhere else!! Thank you Dr Schulte and Dina for always taking such great care of us!!
Dr Schulte was so kind and all the associates are super kind and gracious as well. Great selection of frames and great warranty as well!!! I recently snapped a pair of glasses and since they no longer stocked the frame, they discounted the frames greatly and replaced the lenses free. A great deal!! Thanks Alvernon Optical.
My new eye care center!! Everyone treated me with kindness, professionalism & compassion. The doctor took her time to answer all of my questions and make sure that I was good moving forward. Dena made picking out glasses so much fun. Her attention to detail and her knowledge is amazing. Thanks to her I love my new glasses. I needed to have some adjustments made a few days later because I wear progressives and they must sit perfectly. I was greeted with smiles and so much patience. Never again will I go elsewhere and be treated like I am bothering someone because I need to buy glasses. You are not a dollar sign here. You are a treasured patient.
BEST PLACE TO HAVE YOUR EXAM AND BUY GLASSES AT.
THE DR AND THE STAFF, ESPECIALLY DINA ARE HAPPY, HELPFUL AND WILLING TO GO THE EXTRA MILE TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE COMPLETELY SATISFIED. THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE IS BY FAR THE BEST I HAVE SEN IN A LONG TIME.
IF YOU NEED CONTACTS OR GLASSES, YOU NEED TO GO HERE!
Absolutely phenomenal office!
Do yourself a favor, and don't go to any other office but this one. The staff is professional, fun and quick while also paying attention to detail. They got me in for a last minute emergency and took such good care of me. You have a patient for life!
I came here from another Alvernon Optical in the center of town.
Dr. Schulte was amazing! She explained all the different complications that eyes can have and what we were looking for. She was very personable and thorough. I'm just getting eyeglasses, but I want to ensure I keep my vision for the rest of my life, and I feel comfortable and trusting that this place will help me do that.
I also worked with Vince, who was nothing short of amazing!! He was patient with me while we looked for some frames I liked that were in my budget. He made some suggestions, and overall, he had a friendly, professional demeanor.
I definitely recommend this place for your general optometry needs.
