I've been a patient connected to this practice for over thirty years, beginning with Dr. Hirabayashi in San Francisco. His care was thoughtful, personal, and deeply informed by my history. When he retired, I stayed with the group largely because of the continuity and the kindness of staff like Kana, who still exemplifies that care.
Recently, while dealing with a worsening stye and calling from out of town, I spoke with several staff members over the period of a 4 days. Despite my chart clearly documenting what has worked for me in the past, I was repeatedly told no one would review my record or consult the doctor unless I came in for an appointment. My calls were met with rigidity, and my final call with Nancy ended abruptly with her hanging up on me, calling me "demanding." I was simply asking that my history be acknowledged and for interim guidance to prevent the stye from worsening before I could be seen. I was asking for 2 days of medication as I would have to fly back.
While the doctors themselves are kind, the office system feels impersonal and inflexible, with little regard for patient history or context. After decades of loyalty, I will be moving on.
If anyone has an ophthalmologist they would recommend, I would greatly appreciate the name.
Terrible, traumatic appointment with Dr. Edward Koo, very uncaring and abrupt, uncommunicative, not an ounce of humanity. Extremely pessimistic and negative about my risks for surgery and outcome/prognosis. Wouldn't answer questions, impatient and wanted to usher me out of his office. I suspect he's double, triple or quadruple booked because the wait was well over an hour. Koo's way of interacting with a patient, something was very off with him, he wasn't able to engage at all. He acted as if this was a job he could barely stomach. Not sure if he's in the right profession. Awful visit with Koo, to the point I'm now hunting for a new Dr. Btw., they billed my insurance company for an hour long visit with him plus a battery of four tests. The tests were legitimate charges, but no way did Koo spend an hour with me. That's laughable. He barely spent a few minutes, didn't talk to me as much as he read his notes. My memories of this visit so bad, I can't bear to drive past this place without shuddering.
Extremely long wait times eg 75 minutes. Had a new patient visit with Dr. Koo, who spent less than ten minutes doing the sloppy crappy sorry excuse for an assessment--he totally phoned it in and acted like he was doing us a favor. Couldn't get a single straight answer out of him. Outsized ego. They charged my insurance for a SIXTY minute--yes, one HOUR--appointment! Insurance paid hundreds of bucks. This is ethically/morally questionable! No wonder our health care system is messed up.
Was never notified that my appointment would be on a day the clinic was closed. Showed up and was surprised to see I had wasted my day. Tried to call to reschedule and they said they could not find my previous charts in the new system and would call me back because they don't even know what my appointment was for. Have waited 1 hr past my appointment time each time I have gone to be seen.
This is my first time writing a review for a medical office. I am a healthcare professional myself so I understand things happen. But I believe the lack of communication and follow up in this instance is unprofessional and I don't appreciate my time being wasted.
Dr. Koo has been my doctor for many years and he is fantastic. He is very interested in my eye care. I see him every six months to make sure my vision remains stable. The office staff at the front desk is always very friendly and accommodating. I highly recommend this office.
The doctors at this facility are fantastic! They're experts in their field, provide quick and efficient care, and take the time to explain everything clearly.
However, scheduling appointments through their website has been frustrating. My online requests seemed to vanish into thin air, and I received no response. I ended up having to call the office directly to schedule, which added unnecessary hassle. It would be great if they could improve the reliability of their online appointment system.
Lately, i have been going here every 6 months. Every time, the staff is very professional, giving the various tests needed b4 seeing the Doc. Front desk ladies are awesome, helping with billing and appointments as well as the very helpful glasses department answering questions and checking frames for you. Been very happy with Dr. Koo for 23 years.
I had an appointment this morning,... and everything was so prompt!!!! The doctor came out and got me, and started test after test with no delays!!! What a great experience this morning! Super professional, and kind, and very thorough.
