Had a great experience! Dr. Spector was friendly, helpful, and efficient. He took the time to make sure my prescription was right for me, and it was a genuinely pleasant visit. Highly recommend!
I've never before had the experience of thoroughly enjoying a trip to the optometrist.
The office looks very dingy when you walk in, and there's no receptionist or anyone there but Dr. Spector. But he is one of the most personable people I've ever met, and seemed in full command of what he was talking about. He suggested that I may have an irregularity with my cornea, and didn't try to sell me a new pair of glasses. I'll still have to see how it turns out, but I left feeling impressed and grateful.
The cost for my regular eye appointment (for glasses) was $50.
Fantastic Dr, and very nice people. This is my second time here for an glasses and contacts exam. The Dr. takes his time and is really nice, and the secretary is very friendly. They even gave me a free 5 day sample box of contacts in order for me to try and see if my eyes get used to this brand. Would definitely recommend.
I rarely give out bad reviews on google maps, but Spector really deserves this one. I should say that what I experienced at Spector Eye amounted to verbal sexual harassment. I got contacts from Spector Eye a little more than a week ago, and went there again today for a follow-up examination after wearing trial lenses for a week. If Dr. Spector was personable in our first meeting, his behavior in the follow-up meeting was not only inappropriate, but hugely insulting. When I complained that with contacts on, I have trouble focusing my eyes on my phone with dark background lighting, Spector tuned down the light, and said, "You just want us two to be alone together in dark, do you?" When the meeting was almost over, Spector said, "You can always call my number. We can always get together at any time." My attempt to ignore his words seemed to have no effect on his behavior, and this litany of insults only ended when I gave him an eye roll. So if we are a woman and reading this, do not go to Spector, and if you are not but abhor casual sexism as I do, do not go either.
I showed up 7 minutes late for my appointment. When I walked into this office that is actually set off from Chapel St (2minutes later) after I was directed by one of the men sweeping on the street the owner took one glance at me and I Immediately felt uncomfortable.
Mind you I had canceled this appointment two weeks ago because I mistakenly overbooked with an affair pertaining to my children
In desperate need of an updated prescription and new glasses Haven been wearing the same contacts for over a month this man sat me in the chair after making a copy of my ID and insurance card
Nothing about him seemed welcoming or pleased to have me as his 1st time client.
I sat in the chair and he asked if I currently wear glasses
I made him aware I had contacts
He stepped out to find a lease case then came back and abruptly decided this appoint wasn't going to work because he didn't have time to wait for me to remove my contact
Something I've had to do numerous times in the past....
I explained I could not come here without them and I had no back up glasses and how desperately I needed this appointment
He did not seem to care
Was adamant about me not being able to be seen after I paid 12$ for a Lyft to get there!!!
I believe he saw my black face and decided I was not the patient for him
Blaming the 7minutes I was late was just an excuse
As an eye doctor Some one tells you they been wearing the same contatcts for over a month and without a back up pair of glasses and you turn them away!!!!
Completely unacceptable
I will not be returning EVER!!!
....edit in response the this owners inaccurate response to my honest review of today's interactions I have included a screen shot of what time I arrived at this appointment.
It would have taken all of about 2minutes for me to remove the only things I had left to SEE with and I reiterated DESPERATE for an UPDATED Script!
I've been back in CT for 3months and have been re establishing care and had not been to an eye doctor in over 3yrs!!
He was unprofessional, inpatient and rude! To say the least!!
And he was so busy yet, there wasn't anyone else there.
I was his 1st customer of the day!
I called to cancel my previous appointment 2min after 9 because I didn't realize until the last minute and regardless!!
If he so busy this morning seeing other patients and disinfecting the rooms in between customers he sure did make plenty of time to attempt to defend himself!
Poor service and after 40yrs! I doubt you'll be around much longer! The negative views are going to impact your business and based on the appearance of the small office and limited selection of glasses it's safe to assume the decline has already begun to occur!
11:11AM
An hour later and this man is relentless
Thank God for screen shots and GPS timeline tracking.
Just look at the screen shot.
It clearly shows what time I arrived and what time I left and this additional screen shot shows how he has edited and reworded his response to make his defense more believable!
I'm laughing because He clearly has aged and is not thinking clearly!
You exhibited poor customer service and discriminated against me, you were rude, inpatient and now blatantly lying is an attempt to insult and discredit my character!!
I've included your "Original" response
Now let's get the story right.... did I reschedule the same day or multiple days later because so will then seek out the detailed phone call log from my cell phone carrier to show you that I rescheduled my appointment minutes after 9AM as it was on a Monday, you had been closed all weekend when so realized I overbooked and I had to wait until your office was ACTUALLY open to call.
I have nothing to prove! Just needed some better eye glasses to accommodate the failing vision that has come with age, something g I figured you would understand.
There are many other eye care centers had NEVER even heard of your until now and regret wasting my time, energy and money even attempting to provide you with my patronage!

I actually enjoyed my eye exam. Wierd, right? Dr. Spector is professional, personable, and friendly. We had a lovely conversation while he did the exam, and he was very patient while I tried on a bajillion different frames (and texted a friend for opinions on them). I've definitely found my eye doctor.
Dr. Spector is caring, provides comprehensive exam, paying attention to each patient's needs, and always available for help afterwards. Excellent place to go to if you're in New Haven and need an eye exam (and have VSP insurance).
Was pressured into ordering my contact lenses through them, not online. It was pulling teeth to get the print out of my prescription. They re-assured me it would be easy to get a rebate through an online process, but the way they interacted with me made it difficult. All in all was set back an extra $100 and hours of time wasted trying to get a difficult to use online rebate card (which then some hacker de-frauded me out of, another story though). Having to get yearly eye exams is already a burden. The actual eye exam was good though. Maybe they should stick to that and stop trying to get an extra buck out of us. (Edit in response to their response: it took time to write the review because the rebate process took literally months to resolve itself (which it never really did because I never got the rebate) You were also very eager that I order the lenses through you, but it was very difficult to get the legible documents needed from you to reclaim the rebate.)
