I was in the position of many of the reviews about Vision Therapy that you see with Dr Sherman's office. We had just moved to Florida and I needed to find an new eye Dr for my middle child. I decided to try Dr Sherman's office out. After our first appointment Dr Sherman quickly told me that my daughter needed eye therapy as she had a Binocular Vision impairment. This therapy costs $800 a phase and you had to do three phases before you were re evaluated and then potentially could have to do it again. As a mom I wanted to make sure my child was getting what she needed so I signed up. However, part of the policy at their office that "due to insurance inconsistencies with benefit coverage they would not file though insurance". We paid up front and started therapy right away. Due to our work benefit package we called our insurance to get reimbursed for the payment. At that time our insurance told us that their office is actually supposed to run it through them since they are in our network and actually charged us more then they should for this service. We were also told they would only pay for 12 sessions as at this point this is how many is medically proven to help your child. After finding this information and more about the therapy program we pulled our child. Do your research on Vision Therapy and this office! It took many calls from me, my husband and our insurance to this office to actually have them file correctly. They would avoid our calls and not call anyone back.
This office has gone above and beyond to make sure my son always has his glasses. They have sent in his broken glasses to be fixed using our warranty as well as fixed them in office. When a delay occurred with his new glasses being shipped they came up with a solution to make sure he wouldn't be without them in the meantime.
I'd like to dispel the last two reviews re: Dr. Sherman's Vision Therapy program.
As a result of a multitude of both vision and learning impairments, I was a candidate for the program. I am a walking testament to its positive results and success.
Like most things in life, to net positive results it's helpful to first finish the task. It's the repetition of the program that solidifies the results. If you don't complete the program it's unfair to state that the program doesn't work.
I was a patient of Dr. Sherman's for over 25 years. I was enrolled in the program around the early-mid 90's. I'm positive the skills taught now have evolved into even more useful tools, assisting young minds in navigating life.
Now 33, I am incredibly grateful for the experience Mrs. Tina and Dr. Sherman provided. And you can't find a more dedicated, helpful, and friendly staff - anywhere.
As a mother of a child who was in desperate need of help, Dr Sherman you are a god send for us. Thank you for your dedication to vision therapy. You have helped our son in ways no other could. When glasses or surgery is not an option and we were hopeless, there you were. Thank you for all you do and have done.
The Vision Therapy program is all a BIG SCAM. Don't fall for Dr. Sherman's Tom Foolery into tricking you that your child needs Vision Therapy. It doesn't work. Plus it is $800 per "phase" which is about every 6 weeks. Don't be 15 min late to an appointment or dare miss an appointment or you will automatically be charged $65, no questions asked, no excuses. The staff is rude especially if you owe money.
Please do your research on this practice. Read other reviews from other websites. My son visited Dr. Sherman, O.D. in the summer of 2017. Sherman did an extremely expensive evaluation that wasn't covered under insurance. His findings ranged from Suppression of Binocular Vision, to Convergence Insufficiency, to Intermittent Exotropia. His diagnosis was swift and quick to recommend "Vision Therapy". VT isn't covered by insurance and was $800/month, for two hour long group sessions each week. My son did this treatment for three months, with the promises that it would work correct his Exotropia and all of the other items Sherman said he had. No improvement was evident. I was immediately skeptical and started to do my own research and was amazed at what I found.
The practice of Vision Therapy is highly controversial and not accepted by the medical community. This is largely why insurance doesn't cover it. This is an alternative homeopathic practice with no scientific proof that is works. According to the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Vision Therapy is scientifically unproven. One analogy I heard was similar to the people that believe in special homeopathic remedies that cure cancer, yet they still die from cancer.
Recently, my son went to the best Pediatric Ophthalmologist in Orlando for a second opinion. This particular doctor was voted "Best Doctor in Orlando" by his peers, and is a M.D. & F.A.A.P., specializing in Pediatric Muscle Disorders and Pediatric Vision. After his evaluation, he said that Sherman had misdiagnosed my son. In fact, Sherman's diagnosis of "Suppressed Binocular Vision" was incorrect because my son, in fact, has "very good" Binocular Vision. According to this Ophthalmologist (a Medical Doctor), these Optometrists that recommend VT, default to these diagnosis to justify their expensive treatment. The only agreement in diagnosis was Exotropia, and the traditional method of correction is to do nothing, eye Patching, or Surgery. Naturally, surgery isn't performed by an Optometrist.
When I went back to discuss with Sherman's office, they refused to communicate with me. They probably realize they don't have any proof this therapy works. They took us for a few thousand dollars and left us with no improvement. Again, do your own research!
Not willing to help with any insurance issues. Super rude and not willing to help at all.
Eye therapy program always repeats accomidating rock. Dr Marc H. Sherman won't change to more advanced. Lazy Dr.
