My experience was awesome both times I went to Atwater. First time was getting through an extensive routine visit where I felt heard and cared for. Second time was to go back and get a new pair of glasses, when I ended up getting two pairs for the price of one! I am grateful for the staff and students who made my experience great!
As I have had for over twenty years, I received a very thorough eye exam and contact lens fitting. It took 90 minutes. Remember that you will have a third year student exam, and then followup with a supervising faculty optometrist. I received information about my current eye health, and what to expect as I aged. Well worth my time.
In town visiting friends and family, managed to lose one of my contacts and needed fast replacement. Atwater visionworks made me feel like a priority and helped me to find what I needed quickly.
I have been going to Atwater Eye Care since 2019, and I generally have had a good experience. While they are thorough, they really don't seem to care if you are there for 90+ minutes each time you go. I went for my appointment in November, and they gave me a trial lens for weekly lenses. After the week, I ordered the lenses. It has taken almost 2 months for the lenses to come in, and I have asked for a new trial lens since I am wearing the same weekly lens that is now almost 2 months old. I have called and left messages, and I received no response from them. I called again, and was informed that my lenses were there. Really? To act like you "care" about peoples eyes and obsess about contact lenses to then letting the patient sit in the same weekly lens for almost 2 months really goes to show they don't "care" about your eye health. They want your money and they want to use you for their students to check your eyes for 90+ minutes. Go somewhere else.
I've been a patient for more than five years. They conceded today that they messed up handling dealings with my insurance. When I tried to work things out, they told me to seek care elsewhere. They have skilled, caring doctors and an utterly inept and dismissive administrative staff. I guess this is how things are done at the new IU.
This eye care center came highly recommended by several people I respect. I've been having recurring eye infections, as well as some deterioration in my vision, so thought it would be a good idea to have a thorough exam.
First, while I assumed it would likely be a longer appointment because it's a teaching clinic, I was in no way prepared to be there for 3 hours. I am absolutely floored that no one during the scheduling process thought to say, hey by the way, you'll want to block out several hours for this appointment. Just a little bit of "what to expect" can go a long way.
Second, The entirety of the exam was conducted by a student. She was clearly still learning, and I understand and affirm how important that experience is for students. I kept assuming that, at the end, someone more qualified would come in and check her work. The visit with the doctor was less than 5 minutes, and I was left feeling frustrated and, as it turns out, with a prescription that isn't even accurate.
Last, I am a bigger person. I know for sure I am not the biggest person they saw that day, and yet they didn't seem to know how to accommodate my body. I felt incredibly uncomfortable, and the student with me for several hours also seemed uncomfortable with my body. She couldn't get one of the machines properly lined up because it kept mashing into my chest. I finally suggested that I grip the table hard with my hands and pull it to my face, smashing it into my chest. It was the only apparent way to actually get the machine to line up with my eyes. So for several minutes I was white knuckling this table, to the point that I was shaking, while this machine was jammed into my chest. Do they not ever have patience with large chests? As a teaching clinic, I would think they would want to learn how to accommodate people of all shapes and sizes.
I was left feeling ashamed of my body and without a proper exam.
The optics department at Atwater is the best I've worked with. My glasses are not easy to form to my eyes, but they were extremely transparent, personal, and knowledgeable during a process that can be anxiety-inducing for anyone who is not the typical patient. I greatly appreciated their time and attention offered for what I needed, especially for someone who doesn't ask for it. They simply greeted me with it. I'm only in Bloomington temporarily, but I wish I could have them with me everywhere I select and adjust my frames.
I am a complex case who has a eye disease. I've now had I er 20 eye procedures and surgeries. I am legally blind. I saw one of the doctors several years ago via referral from a cornea surgeon in Indianapolis. At the last consultation here in January the doctor walked me to th scheduling desk to tell them to send a referral both cornea and glaucoma surgeons in Indianapolis. To try to get in at same time. To my sister is my only transportation to Indy for my eye surgeons. She's a professor at i.u. Also has a psychiatric job. So her schedule is booked. The doctor at i.u. optometry clearly stated getting in with the glaucoma surgeon was the most important need however. Two weeks later I got a call from the cornea surgeons office. Apparently the scheduling desk had not sent any referrals to the glaucoma one though. I'm still waiting to hear from someone.
My pressures have been inconsistent. Only one eye is useful as if now too. If you're a complex
