Eye Care Of Iowa - South Des Moines

I've been a very loyal patient of this office for the past 20 years. I've been coming since I got my first pair of glasses at 7 years old and always had good experiences up until this weekend. I came in for my annual exam and the entire staff had changed from last year. My experience was bad from check in to check out. The receptionist got irritated with me for verifying she had my new insurance on file, as if I should have known that they looked me up and didn't need my card. The new optometrist is incredibly rude and condescending. He yelled at me for having irritated red eyes (I just lost my brother and had been crying prior to the appointment). I then asked if I'm able to order contacts today because I've been wearing the same lenses for a decade and know I'd like to get a years supply. He raised his voice at me and told me "I'm not ordering you anything until you call after using the trials". Which, okay fine, but no need to get mad at me for asking. Then at checkout, the lady that started helping me got up and abandoned me to help another patient and her and another lady were bickering back and forth about who would take care of me as if I was in the way for simply attending my appointment. I am extremely sad that this location has gone downhill and after 20 years I'll now be looking for a new place to go. Super disappointed.

Illegal billing, Crooks, beware!!! I came in for a routinely diabetic Eye exam to this Dr for the first time. I normally go to Huseman Eyecare. I have never been charged for this since it should be billed as preventative exam. I received a bill from this place almost $300, so I called my Insurance co, only to find that they billed it as Medical! So I called Eye Care and found that Dr. Kreg Harper codes these bills himself. When I had him do the eye exam he told me that my eyes were in good shape and did not have any issues from Diabetes but when I called complaining about the bill coded incorrectly, he started claiming that my eyes were degenerative but strangely he did not treat me for anything only performed the exam. The reason for him billing this as Medical is to profit more money from his victims. The biller there told me I wasn't the first person complaining about this. I am going to reach out to the state since this Doctor is illegally ripping off his customers and the insurance company. I will never use this clinic again since I am uncertain if their other Doctors does this to their patience as well. I hope I can find a way to prevent other from getting ripped off!!!

Needed to see an ophthalmologist so called and was able to get an appointment within the week. All staff in the office were friendly and professional, both on the phone and in person. The eye doctor took time to answer my questions and make sure I was comfortable with his recommendations. Overall a very positive experience. Would recommend.

Front desk check-in rep was kind, but rest of the experience was disappointing. I expressed that I did not want my eyes dilated and was told it was "not an option." The lady to the left of check in didn't even get out of her chair to come explain or speak with me and yelled across the room that if I refused, they wouldn't see me. Very poor customer service.

They were ok with the eye exam, but they misrepresented how much we had to pay for the exams. Very expensive even with vision Insurance. We won't be going back to Eye Care of Iowa.

Doctor was good but the staff lack very much. Very rude and not customer forward at all. Seems like no one wants to be in that office. Glad I took my script and went elsewhere!

Great office BUT the Dr codes things on billing to make more money! Confirmed by billing. I have never been to an eye doctor that bills both your vision insurance and medical insurance for a visit and with no Estimated costs upfront!! 24 year old with protentional future of glaucoma. seriously, don't we all! Paid $400 at visit and billed an additional $418 after visit. That is just my sons, Husband paid $474 and billed an additional $308. Just beware of pricing here. No Surprise Act doesn't matter here at Eye Care of Iowa

I've always had really good experiences here, the people are great, extremely friendly. However, I didn't love being blindsided today with an $80 bill AFTER our exam for my daughter and I (we have state insurance). I let them know, if I would have known about the fee I would have passed on that part out of the exam and was informed they are not able to do that and I could go somewhere else if I wasn't ok with paying for the imaging of the back of the eye. So just a heads up if you have state insurance, you'll be expected to pay $40 per exam but they are covering a pair of glasses now.
