Krieger Eye Institute

Zero stars. I am new to the area and was referred to this doctor Hirshbien for my daughter's care. The nurse stated that my daughter would receive same day service for her eye which is the only reason we scheduled with them. Upon arrival the receptionist attempted to get me to sign for a host of "charges" upfront and explained we might get an additional charge later but she is not sure. The nurse and doctor spoke with us in a large group, about 5 people, came into the room. When I asked about the procedure the Dr stated that he couldn't do it because the chair would be uncomfortable for my daughter. I'd never heard anything like it. He told me someone would call me in a few weeks to schedule an appointment. I never heard back from them. I called and only got voicemail boxes. I eventually received a bill with charges over 700 to me and my insurance! They scammed us into coming in and charges us for services they did not provide. Ive alerted the hospital and insurance providers of the fraud and working to get the charges removed. Just wanted people to be aware of the scam. Im sure he might treat his friends and family better hence the positive reviews but they are committing fraud and I hope they get shut down.

Dr. Sanz is a great doctor. All the doctors seem to be very professional. But the assisting staff always loose or can't find my referral. I got my PCP to fax a referral to the number that was on my appt. letter. I called ahead of time to see if they received the referral. I was told yes. This was done a month prior to the appt. because they claim they had not got the referral on a previous visit. The PCP was called again and the office sent another referral: but they said they didn't get it. They asked what fax number I was using, I showed them my appt. letter with the fax number on it. The receptionist stated that was an old fax number and it was to a building they no longer use. Well how would you expect to get the referral if the staff has not taken the time to make sure information that the patient gets is correct. It took an additional 40 minutes before I was seen even though I got there 20 minutes earlier than my scheduled appt.

I've been a patient here for 10+ years and I'm on my 3rd doctor which is fine all 3 have been great. There have been times when I was seen within a few minutes and there have been times when I had to sit in the waiting area 20 minutes. As far as paying more than the $10 copay maybe the problem is your insurance.

I saw Dr. Abrams in February 2017. Prior to my visit, I called his office and confirmed that he accepted my insurance and was assured that he did. I went to my appointment and that went fine. A month later I received a bill for $400.00. I called his office and checked with my insurance. My insurance carrier confirmed that my responsibility was $40.00 which I had paid. That said, I have continued to receive bills for the remainder ($360.00) and was referred to a credit agency. The billing office from Dr. Abrams practice told me that the $40.00 covered my responsibility for the exam but the $360.00 was a charge for Dr. Abrams "office space". I have I have never heard of such a charge and I have sent letters to Dr. Abrams and the Krieger Eye Institute's CEO to no avail. I highly recommend that you do not seek services form the Krieger Eye Institute.

I was in a horrible accident in October 2020. I followed up with Dr. Marc Hirshbein after being referred from Shock Trauma. He has been professional, kind and supportive. His resident is lovely. He has saved my vision and fixed the appearance of my eye. I travel a total of 3 hours to see him and I gladly do it. The care at Kreisler Eye Institute is top rate and I would refer them in a heartbeat.

If I could 0 stars i would because they dont deserve 1. I'm writing this review for a good friend who hands down had the WORST and probably illegal experience at this place. She went in for an eye exam and when it was time to run her insurance BEFORE SHE WAS SEEN BECAUSE ALL HEALTHCARE PLACES RUN YOUR INSURANCE TO VERIFY BENEFITS FIRST. Well they neglected to tell her that she had the wrong insurance information, waited 2 months than sent her a bill for $400 FU*K**G DOLLARS. WHAT DAMN HEALTHCARE PLACE HAS THE STUPIDITY TO ACCEPT A CLIENT WITHOUT VERIFYING BENEFITS AND ACTIVE INSURANCE. If they don't drop the bill because she's not paying it, she'll sue them.

Very expensive- cost over $450 for a eye exam, and a additional $135 for the "eye doctor" to see me. This is without getting any glasses. They do not provide a "actual itemization" (complete breakdown of what you are being charged for) when requested, and states that Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission that sets their rates. Was not told what it would cost and that my insurance would not cover it prior or during the appointment. If I would have known that it was going to cost that much without even getting needed glasses, I would have went to my regular eye doctor. Lesson learned the hard way.

When I first began receiving care at KEI in 2008, I had a wonderful doctor. When she left, the next doctor, who also left soon after I began seeing her, was also very good. It quickly went down hill to the point that I could not make myself pay for such poor service. Several months ago I went for a follow-up with my regular eye doctor who tried to convince me to return to KEI for corneal care (I have a corneal disease) or somewhere else (she gave me a referral) because I needed follow up care. I finally relented and returned to KEI when I began to feel what my general eye care doctor saw. I met with Dr. Brink who turned out to be the best doctor I have seen there so far. He was so patient, kind, and compassionate that I felt relaxed and trusting in his hands.
