Shady Grove Eye and Vision Center gives the best service of any eye care center I have ever visited. Each member of the staff are professional and courteous, plus knowledgeable. It is one stop shopping with a large array of frames to choose from. Dr. Rubin instills trust and ease with her thorough exams and extensive conversations about your specific eye conditions. I recommend this establishment 125 percent!
I've been going to Shady Grove Eye and Vision Care for over 10 years. I normally see Dr. Alan Glazier, who has always been wonderful. Recently, however, I was switched to Dr. Vicky Wong, and both my sisters and I have had poor experiences with her. Each time, it has felt like she was trying to charge us for things we didn't truly need.
In my case, I've been using ortho-k lenses for about 10 years. This year I decided to stop ortho-k and start planning for LASIK, and in the meantime get a pair of glasses. I clearly told Dr. Wong that I had worn my ortho-k lenses sporadically the prior week and had been completely off them for only 3 days. She said she would need to wait 10 days for my eyes to "settle" before getting a final glasses prescription. (For context, Dr. Glazier had previously told me a minimum of 2 weeks.)
I explained I was only in town visiting family for the holidays and might not be able to return in 10 days. I said I would call back once I knew my travel plans. I then went to look at frames, found a pair I liked, and asked to hold them until I could return for a proper prescription check. I ultimately was not able to come back.
Despite that, they went ahead and placed the order with the wrong prescription and initially told me they could not refund my money. Only later did I learn that I should have been able to cancel and get a full refund within 30 days. They did eventually refund me, but only after pushback.
When I spoke with Dr. Wong over the phone, she then told me she did not actually have to wait the full 10 days and that the glasses would "work perfectly" anyway. She justified it by saying 10 days was just an approximate timeline. After speaking to another eye doctor, I was told you generally should wait at least 1-2 weeks (and often 2-4 weeks) after stopping ortho-k before relying on a final prescription.
I told Dr. Wong that, had I known this, I would have just gotten glasses in my home state. She doubled down, insisting she knew my prescription and that the glasses would work perfectly, even though my vision has noticeably changed since that visit.
Overall, I left feeling that my care was rushed and that the priority was making a sale rather than doing what was best and most appropriate for my situation. Based on this experience, I no longer feel comfortable seeing Dr. Wong and will be seeking eye care elsewhere.
Dr. Glazier is excellent and thorough. The receptionists are warm and competent. The people who sell the glasses are very helpful, caring, knowledgeable at handling insurance details and fittings. I've been coming here for almost 20 years. It is a very well-run practice with a very good "vibe."
I am Sandra Sundstrom. I would like to complement Mr. Greg Snowden for his exemplary care and consideration in helping me find the perfect glasses. He is the only Optician I have EVER had who takes the time to talk with me and truly cares to find the best product for my vision needs. He's the only Optician for me, and Dr. Vickie Wong, Optometrist, is the best!
I have had almost 40 years with this practice starting with Dr. Glazier's father. Even though I have moved to Virginia I make the trip to stay with the practice. They have the latest equipment and I get a complete exam. When I got an infection they saw me the same day. I would definitely recommend this practice.
I was particularly impressed by Dr. Alvarez and Sharon. Dr Alvarez completed my eye exam, she was thorough in her testing and helpful in answering any questions I had. Sharon was the optician who helped me out. She was very kind and patient while I was deciding on frames and trying to figure out what I wanted to order for new glasses. She did a fantastic job meeting me where I was at with my budget and explaining what my insurance would cover.
My one constructive feedback (the reason why I didn't give 5 stars) is that I think that the $39 payment for the mandatory retinal imaging should have been disclosed to me before I showed up to my appointment. I wish that I was told this information over the phone when I initially scheduled the appointment. When I showed up at my appointment, I was told that all patients are required to get the retinal imaging as standard of care now. That is something that patients should be notified of ahead of time, before they show up, for the sake of transparency. At all the previous optometry clinics I've gotten eye exams at, it was recommended but optional to choose to do the retinal imaging for an extra fee.
The doctors at Shady Grove Eye and Vision are thorough, take their time and are friendly. The techs and staff are also. They care about you as a person, not just a patient. We tried another practice closer to home after retirement but it didn't compare so, even though it is further to go, we returned.
Vicky is great but the other crew from the front desk to sales are cold and unwelcoming. Got the same vibe as myEye dr where they just want to give you an eye exam and then sell you glasses for a profit. The optional retinal exam is posed not something voluntary and the choice to buy eye glasses are basically forced on you. I made it clear several times I wanted my prescription sent to me and they assured me it would be sent. Sales person had 0 intention of ever getting it sent to me electronically. Beware
