I was referred to CHIKAEYECARE and took my 5-year-old son for his first full eye exam. The doctor was kind, patient, and thorough, and the staff during the exam was gentle and attentive, which helped make my son comfortable. If I were rating just the doctor, this would be a higher review.
After the exam, we were shown a small selection of children's glasses. My son found one pair he liked, and after insurance, the total came to about $250--mostly due to the blue light protection, which cost more than $100. Since it was his first pair of glasses, we went ahead and purchased them through the office.
When we returned a couple of weeks later to pick up the glasses (around 6:30 PM, with the office open until 7), the experience felt rushed. The staff simply placed the glasses on my son in the middle of the lobby without checking the fit or making any adjustments. Having worn glasses myself for over 20 years, I expected a more personalized handoff and fitting.
I also asked for a glasses case and was told they don't provide them. That was a first for me, as every other optical business I've used has offered at least a basic case for new glasses. I ended up buying a $3 case on-site and was given a cleaning wipe. When I asked for additional wipes, they said it would be $5 per wipe. I also requested that my son's pupillary distance be included on the prescription and was told that would cost an additional $10. They even charge a shipping fee when you order glasses.
Overall, the doctor provided a solid experience, but the retail side felt overly transactional and overpriced. Between the upsells and lack of care during pickup, the experience came across as more of a money grab than a patient-centered service. I likely won't return for future glasses purchases, though I do appreciate the doctor's professionalism during the exam.
Edit: I changed my rating to 1 star. They overcharged me and when I questioned it, they were rude. I had to call my insurance company to get assistance. Also, please be aware of the $35 charge for shipping and handling. Your insurance pays for that. So I'm pretty sure they're pocketing that $35. Especially if they're sending multiple pairs out at one time and charging $35 per person. Frames DO NOT cost $35 to ship. And they will claim they tell you this and it's posted on the desk. When I questioned it, the girl told me it was due to tariffs. I will not be returning due to the poor customer service.
Initial review:
I will say Dr. Chika was very thorough in her exam. She provided great insight in which made me upgrade my glasses to protect my eyesight.
The only thing I did not like was the service I received when I picked up my glasses. The person that helped me just handed me my glasses and asked if I could see. I told her it was fine but they needed some adjusting to fit my face. She kept adjusting them until I told her they fit. She didn't provide any feedback. When I got home, I had to call back to ask what my prescription consisted of. When she looked it up, she realized I had progressive lens for the first time. So apparently she was supposed to walk me through how to use them. So I had to go back for her to show me. In my opinion, if I just paid all this money, the expectation is that I get quality service from beginning to end. While serving me, she should have looked at what I had and followed through. One thing she didn't forget to ask for was the balance that was due. She collected that very quickly but provided poor customer service. Not sure if I'll be returning next year for my exam.
I attempted to schedule an appointment and the front desk person made me cancel my appointment. She was sooooo rude and has zero customer service training . This doctor will lose a lot of business because of the "office manager"
I was visiting my daughter out of state and I developed an emergency with my left eye. My daughter called several places but everyone was booked up. Finally she was able to book an appointment for me with Dr. Chika Ojukwu at Chika Eye Care. From the time I entered the office, everyone was friendly, professional and smiling faces. My wait time was very minimal. While seeing the Doctor, she referred me to a specialist. She made all the arrangements, she didn't hand it over to her staff. She called my insurance company, the specialist, set up the new appointment for 2 hrs later that day. She also refunded my $85.00 for the visit. I have never in my life met such a caring Doctor. I would highly, highly recommend Dr. Chika Ojukwa at Chika Eye Care for your eye health. Thank you Dr Chika.
I have never met a Doctor like Dr Chika. I am almost in tears as I write this message. She is highly competent and skilled, and the most caring, compassionate, attentive, professional, and persistent Doctor that I have ever met. My mom came in with concerns of a detached retina. The Doctor performed an exam, and my mom was frustrated and stressed about her health situation. The Doctor advised that she see a retina specialist as the case was concerning. The Doctor could sense my mother was highly stressed. Dr Chika called the retina specialist office to speak to the doctor there while with my mom to connect her to that office and also scheduled her appointment for her to ease her frustrations and personal things she was dealing it. Dr Chika went back and forth to the front to ensure my mother's documents was sent and received on the other end. She also called the other office to ensure they sent everything and spoke to my mother's doctor's office. I have never seen a doctor go above and beyond the way Dr Chika did. I am grateful for her kindness, care, and thoroughness in the care for my mother. That was an unforgettable experience that doctors truly do care for their patients. Thank you to Dr Chika.
I love the doctor but they must be updated on state and federal laws. Despite the office having a $45 broken appt/missed appt fee, my daughter has Medicaid and legally you cannot charge a patient a fee. I do not routinely miss appointments and sent my daughter to school. They can notify my insurance about my missed appointment and they will contact me. I work in a medium volume Medicaid office as an office manager and I wish I could charge those patients but we cannot. I feel so bad for ppl who do not know this. Unfortunately, I will have to report this office and find a new provider for my daughter.
I was searching for an Optometrist with whom I could build a relationship with since my family of four all wear glasses. Last year we all had our annual exam and it was GREAT! Dr. Chika took great care of my children and she pays great attention to detail.
A year passed, and it was time to have our annual exam. I typically try to have eye examinations before the start of the school year. My children's appointment was scheduled for a Monday in August. The Saturday evening before their appointment, my husband fell sick and tested positive for Covid-19. The office is closed on Sundays, so the soonest I was able to contact Chika Eye Care was Monday morning, the day of the appointment. I contacted the office explained the situation, and rescheduled the appointment. The office Manager requested proof of COVID-19, and I emailed her a picture of the positive test.
The appointment was rescheduled for October, then rescheduled AGAIN, by the office to November. When I arrived to our appointment I was billed $80 for 2 no-show/ cancelled appointments. Due to the fact I could not cancel in advance I feel I should not have been charged a fee for cancelling the appointment thinking about the care of the practice and others. The office Manager stated Dr. Chika would waive one no show fee but not both! In this economy no one has $40 to give away when the appointment was cancelled for legitimate reasons. I have had follow-up appointments between visits, and my family does not have a negative appointment history with this office.
This situation and experience has declared that Dr. Chika Eye Care does not care about the health and wellness of their patients and staff but, is more concerned about billing and making money. You have to even pay a fee for a printout of your prescription. I found odd but paid at my previous appointment with no problem.
I try to support local small businesses but, reasons like this is why I will go back to Chain Establishments such as Lens Crafters.
