I do not recommend this office.
My daughter had a comprehensive exam and we paid separately for a contact lens fitting only a few months ago. After she experienced ongoing issues with her toric lenses tearing and shifting under her eyelid, we asked about switching to daily lenses to address the problem. Instead of a constructive discussion or trial option, we were told we would need to pay for another exam.
Communication throughout this process was poor. Requests related to prescriptions for outside retailers were not handled promptly, and calls were not returned. Obtaining a copy of our prescription became unnecessarily difficult.
I also ordered glasses using the prescription provided and the lenses were noticeably blurry, with an axis measurement significantly different from prior prescriptions I've had without issue. In addition, the only pair of glasses we purchased directly from this office developed visible stress fracture lines in the lenses within a couple of weeks. There was no proactive follow-up regarding fit or quality.
They never provided any itemized receipts for the services or charges, which felt unprofessional. Additionally, they asked me to sign the back of a folded piece of paper without explaining what it was, which made me feel uneasy and raised concerns about transparency.
Overall, the experience felt unprofessional and dismissive. As a parent, I expect clear communication, responsiveness, and a willingness to address concerns. That was not our experience here. I would be cautious when visiting this office.
I cannot say enough good things about this doctor - immediately was seen and they were so helpful in explaining things, working on getting you the best price, and finding a pair of glasses. Never felt rushed, just a refreshing experience start to finish. Highly recommend.
I called to see if they took walk ins and they told me they don't but they had a cancellation that day and got me in, (January 29th) which was great. The bathroom was closed which sucked as I'm pregnant. Dr was great, eye exam was thorough, and picking out frames was easy for me. The person I picked out frames with told me my glasses would be in in 7-10 days. I figured business days so around 2 weeks. After 3 weeks of not hearing anything I called to check on my glasses and they told me there were delays from the weather. Another week passed (4 weeks since appointment) I called again and they still weren't in. A day before the 5 week mark the person who I originally picked out frames with called to tell me my glasses had come in a couple weeks ago, but came damaged so they had to be shipped back out and that is what caused the delays. In the same phone call he told me that they were ready now (March 4th). There was another time I called around the 4 week mark to get them to write down my prescription so I could order more glasses online to have extra pairs. All the times I called to check in they never told me my glasses came in damaged or had to be sent back. I went to pick up my glasses on March 5th and as an "apology" they gave me a "better" glasses case for the inconvenience. He also said this rarely happens and he wished it had happened to a customer that "wasn't so nice". Super unprofessional to not be up front about the reason they're delayed and they couldn't even be bothered to call or update me the times I called them. I was in a need to get the glasses quickly as well due to headaches during my pregnancy (which I told them is the reason I was there) and the delay in being able to check off my outdated prescription as the problem has caused unnecessary stress and slowed my headache treatment.
Title: Shocking Disappointment at Eye Openers - A Clear Case of Misleading Practices
I'm beyond disappointed with my experience at Eye Openers. While my exam with Dr. Hinspeter was exceptional, the rest of the experience, especially with the staff, was appalling. Here's a breakdown of the issues:
I had my first appointment on 2/28/25 with Dr. Hinspeter, and it was genuinely the best eye exam I've ever had. The doctor took the time to explain things I hadn't learned before, and I felt well-cared for.
However, everything took a turn after the exam. I have endured months of being run-around just to get my eyeglasses prescription.
The staff member who assisted me was overly pushy about buying glasses from the practice. I had brought my own used Jimmy Choo frames to have re-lensed, but the staff member discouraged this by claiming it was difficult and risky to change lenses in used frames. He claimed they often break during the process (lie #1), and that my frames were too worn to safely re-lens without significant risk (lie #2). Instead, he aggressively pushed me toward their more expensive frames, even commenting, "You obviously like nice things."
Feeling pressured, I left without ordering anything. I also was never offered a copy of my prescription, and I didn't think to ask for it. Per the FTC Eyeglasses Rule, this should have been provided right away, regardless of whether I requested it or not.
A quick search revealed that I had been misled about the risks of re-lensing my own frames.
A few days later, my husband went in to request my prescription. The same staff member refused to provide it, citing HIPAA (lie #3). He insisted I, the patient, would need to obtain it personally. This is incorrect, as eyeglasses prescriptions are not protected by HIPAA and must be provided immediately under the FTC Eyeglasses Rule.
On 3/26/25, I called to request my prescription. I was told that due to HIPAA, they couldn't provide it by phone or email and that it would have to be faxed to me (lie #4). Since it's 2025, I don't have a personal fax machine, and that response was completely unhelpful. Another search quickly revealed that prescriptions can be provided by phone or email without issue.
Finally, on 5/27/25, I walked into the practice to pick up my prescription, but the same staff member told me I couldn't be helped immediately and would need to wait until the doctor was free, after 2 scheduled eye exams. When I asked if I could sign a HIPAA release for my husband to pick it up later, he said, "We don't do that for prescriptions."
That's when I knew something wasn't right. They'd been throwing HIPAA excuses at me for weeks, but now they were telling me I couldn't even sign a release? It felt like a deliberate attempt to stall and avoid complying with the law.
After leaving, I returned with my husband, who asked for my prescription. Despite the staff member's previous denials, my husband walked out with the prescription in less than a minute. The staff had it sitting at the reception desk all along, waiting to hand it over, but no one asked me for my name or offered to help me.
To sum it up, the staff at Eye Openers is either grossly uninformed about FTC and HIPAA regulations or are deliberately misleading patients to further their own interests. It's a shame that one person's behavior ruined what could have been a great experience.
I really appreciated Dr. Hinspeter, but I won't be returning.
(P.S. I'm now happily wearing my Jimmy Choo frames, re-lensed with ease, as I was originally told I couldn't do.)
They are the best! Treat you like family! Always happy to assist with whatever you question or concerns are. Goes above and beyond in customer service, before, during, and after your visit.
No bathroom for customers. I asked and I was told out of order n walk to Shop rite and use there bathroom. Question? Where do the workers use the bathroom when they need to go? Ugly cheep Eyewear as well. I consult my app N left. I heard when they were trying to make a sell to a customer. I wish you could of heard the sell pitch he was selling her... The eye Dr. Herself didn't even interlude her self to me. Made feel like she didn't like color folks. My opinion.
Matt and Doc are phenomenal, absolutely outstanding for everything they do! I love this place to pieces!!!
Great service, knowledge and just all around amazing people that make the office feel like home! I'm beyond grateful, they give over 100% everytime I'm in the office!! Thank you!
Horrible customer service, VERY condescending. I have been in glasses for over 25 years, I personally did not get anything done here but I went with my best friend who is newer to glasses to talk to them about the issues of not seeing properly and they were extremely rude the entire time. Please don't go here they deserve to go out of business I have never been so disrespected.
