Best place to get glasses, always have great deals no one can beat, plus you can get your glasses same day. But most of all, best service!!!! I love Lynn, she helps me every time I go in. They treat their customers like family. I would highly recommend them to everyone
Lori helped me with my initial purchase and then a follow up on my glasses months later and she is fantastic. She has knack for picking out frames for other people that are flattering and cater to the customer's preferences. She's genuine in her interactions and a pleasure to work with. Definitely ask for her when you come in.
Stanton Optical was very accommodating with appointments for myself and my sons. Wait time was fairly quick. Compared to other competitors. I really love that the office uses modern machines.
Everyone was very personable. Fun, even..
But, the selection wasn't great. One of my sons found two frames he liked -they were basically the same with different arms. I did not end up getting frames at all for lack of option and honestly, I did not know if my prescription would cost more needing a multifocal lense and nobody bothered telling me either way. My other son ended up only getting one frame because he didn't really LOVE any but needed at least one.
My biggest issue came with the restyling. My son ended up going back literally the same week, only days later because in one of the frames the prescription was backwards. He decided to just switch out frames for something different since he was there and they offer restyling. I was told they would "work with me" on the price difference in frames. I ended up paying the full extra $60. Not really sure anyone realized it and I was not about to make my son feel bad for getting glasses he liked.
The pricing needs to be made completely clear. It isn't. They kind of assume you know which frames go with their promotions if you are paying cash and if you are using insurance it's similar. There is no point that anyone runs down what you are actually paying for, what is included, or shows you. They say go pick frames you like. No guidance about pricing. There are price signs, but that's not really helpful. I had no idea lenses were included, etc. They just give you a total from a screen you don't ever see. Even the original receipt didn't make complete sense to me and I was not given one for the restyling despite paying an extra $60.
The atmosphere is great. The exam is wonderful. Just, make sure you ask a lot of questions about pricing.
I walked in the door for my appointment. A young woman said hello, welcome in, but didn't look up because she was filing her nails. She continued filing her nails while she took a phone call. I figured maybe someone else was supposed to help me, but no one acted like it was their job to help me. I stood there awkwardly until finally the nail filer completed filing her nails. She led me to a waiting room that smelled really bad and I entered my info into an iPad. Because of the bad first impression, I started looking at their 1 star reviews and decided this was not the place for me. Read the bad reviews before you go.
Jamie was truly amazing!!! Made the entire experience amazing. I definitely recommend coming and seeing her. 10 out of 10
I ordered some glasses from an online retailer and the day my glasses came in they broke. I had replacement frames sent to me but my lenses didn't fit, they were too big. So I called Stanton Optical in Hickory and they said they could try to fix them and made me an appointment. Took my glasses in and the store manager looked to see if they had frames that my lenses would fit in, they didn't. So they decided that they would shave down my lenses to get them to fit. They done an awesome job offered to help me out if anything happened to my lenses. They called me a few hours later to tell me my glasses were ready to be picked up. I went the next day to pick them up and was expecting to pay a fee for the work they had done. They didn't even charge me. From now on I will be a returning customer for all of my eye care and glasses needs. I will also tell everyone I know to go to Stanton Optical in Hickory because they are the best and all the staff are extremely nice.
Staff were nice. That's the end of anything positive. Stanton Optical is deceitful. Paid for an "eye exam" that was a remote test with some one on a television screen and left without a prescription because they don't have an on-site optometrist to write a prescription. Meaning paying for a second appointment elsewhere to get a prescription Stanton should've provided. I could've just made an appointment somewhere else to begin with.
I've worn glasses my entire life and have run the full gamut of optical experiences--from old-school independents to "luxury" boutique shops and big chains. Over the last decade, a lot of the boutique opticians I used to trust drifted into the same pattern: prices climbed into the stratosphere, staff got increasingly arrogant, and the actual craft (precision refraction, PD, seg height, and frame adjustment) seemed to matter less and less. The default answer for anything complex became "you need Varilux," but the process quality often didn't justify the price.
My experience at the Stanton Optical in Hickory, NC was the polar opposite of that trend.
Between me and my wife, we buy multiple pairs at a time--progressives for everyday wear, prescription sunglasses, and safety glasses--so we're spending real money and we're extremely sensitive to both optical performance and fitting accuracy. On visits spread over several weeks, I purchased three pairs of progressives (clear, sun, safety), and my wife bought one pair as well. I began with just the safety glasses and was very pleased with the result so I went-on to purchase my main glasses and sunglasses. I went in expecting "budget chain" compromises and walked out with some of the best-fitting, best-performing progressives I've owned.
What stood out:
- They took the prescription process seriously. In my case, I used their remote exam setup (my wife saw a local doctor), and they were willing to verify things, use trial lenses, and assure that the numbers actually worked for me in real life rather than just rushing me out the door. My prescription had changed a good deal since my last exam and they patiently took the time to assure my new prescription was spot-on.
- They were meticulous on measurements--PD and segment height were treated as critical, not an afterthought. That is exactly where many high-priced boutiques today are shockingly sloppy.
- Frame adjustment was careful and deliberate. I've had boutique opticians bend expensive frames completely out of shape and destroy the optical alignment during "adjustment." Here, they treated the frame and the optics like a system that had to stay in tune.
The end result: their "ultra premium" progressives delivered a level of clarity, stability, and comfort that in my experience is fully competitive with, and in some ways better than, the Varilux designs I've worn in the past--at a lower overall cost and with far better process discipline at this particular location. Varilux is no longer the only serious option in my mind.
The craftsmanship of the work fitting the lenses to the frames was better than I typically received at high end opticians-- very clean and precise work. They also have an excellent frame selection. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and style of the frames. I'm particular on frames and often spend a fortune on them-- they had name brand safety glasses frames and their store brand for their other frames. Everything we bought was high quality.
To be clear, not all locations of any chain are created equal, and I'm very aware Stanton as a company gets a wide range of reviews. But this Hickory NC store has earned my trust the hard way: by doing the fundamentals right, respecting the technical details that actually matter to someone who wears progressives all day, and delivering results that justify the investment.
If you're someone who has been burned by overpriced "boutique" experiences and assumes that only a high-end independent with Varilux can deliver real quality, this Stanton location is worth a serious look.
