Clarkson Eyecare

My vision insurance covers one contact lens fitting per year. Despite this, Clarkson Eyecare billed me $144 for a "complex contact fitting" that they claimed was not covered by my insurance. There was zero transparency about this charge prior to checkout, and I would never have agreed had this been disclosed in advance. I brought my insurance benefit packet with me, which clearly shows that a standard contact fitting is fully covered. Staff refused to review or acknowledge the documentation. Instead, I was told, "You always owe something with insurance," and that they had billed me under a different tier. My contact fitting was no different than any prior year, required no additional testing, time, or complexity, and did not warrant a higher billing code. What is especially concerning is that Clarkson was transparent about the $39 eye imaging fee beforehand--which I agreed to--demonstrating that they are capable of upfront disclosure when they choose to be. The lack of transparency around the contact fitting charge appears intentional. I work in healthcare and am very familiar with billing practices. This felt like a deliberate upcoding to collect additional payment, despite the service being clearly covered by insurance. An easy and appropriate resolution would have been to correct the billing code to the covered contact fitting, but they refused. I will be formally disputing this charge with both Clarkson Eyecare and my insurance provider until it is resolved. I have attached documentation of my insurance coverage and Clarkson's bill for reference.

I saw the staff and Dr. Matthew Howell at Clarkson Eyecare on Beechmont Ave the other day. The front desk girls greeted me with smiles and checked me in. I had my protesting. With someone else, also very nice and efficient. Dr. Howell is always very kind and explains everything with a smile. I highly recommend Clarkson and especially Dr. Howell.

Dr. Howell is always so thorough during my eye exam visits with him. He is also always so helpful with any concerns that I have may have. His team of employees are always friendly and as helpful as well.

Dr. Howell always gives me the best care. He takes the time to explain the exam and answers all of my questions thoroughly. I appreciate not being rushed and treated like cattle. My wife is very happy with the care she receives as well. Very nice staff also.

I was so happy I went to Clarkson Eyecare!! Dr Howell took the time to care for my eyes as I have had problems with vision for many years. No one else ever took the time. Greatly appreciated!! The staff was also very helpful in picking out my new glasses and I can't wait to get them. Give Clarkson Eyecare a try I think you will be pleased.

All the exam services were great and I really appreciate the tech upgrades and procedures are getting easier on the eyes! My only tip to get even better service is for new eyeglasses to be made more quickly.

I took my family there 2 years ago. While waiting in the waiting area, I heard the optometrist berating a customer over the phone. I should have walked out then. I got prescription glasses which did not improve my vision. Then they started automatically booking appointments for me and my family. I had to call and cancel and tell them to stop. Then, the phone calls started. They called me from different numbers several times a month. I would block one number, and they would call me from another. Then an appointment showed up on my google calendar (that I never asked for nor made!). I emailed them to tell them to stop. Today I received an email saying if I didn't call to cancel and didn't show up, they would charge my credit card. I have unsubscribed and blocked their emails, and somehow they keep being able to get through. This is predatory.

Great experience. My new prescription from another provider was wrong. They re-did the refraction, for a low price, gave me a new prescription and made new lenses for me at no charge.
