If you go, make sure you personally verify your insurance benefits, and ask for a detailed breakdown of cost from their optical shop.
After being ushered into the optical shop after my eye appointment like being ushered into the gift shop after a cheesy theme park experience, I was pressured to buy glasses from there less than an enthusiastic staff, who based on their presentation didn't really want to be there that day.
Their approach to selling glasses is much like the approach of a slimy used car salesman. They reference multiple documents, including your insurance benefits under the cover of a laminated sheet of paper where they try to apply simple math to show you what a great deal you're getting.
I had previously bought a pair of frames from their optical shop and only wanted to replace my lenses. The optician presented me with a form saying I recognized they were not responsible for my frames should damage occur during the inset of new lenses, because I did not buy the frames from them. I informed her that was not the case and that I did buy them from Mann Eye and I would not be signing the form. She brushed it off and said "well, you know what we mean... It just means that you didn't buy them from us this year... I'm sure everything will be OK. " She would not proceed with the order unless I signed the form which was not only inaccurate, but did not represent my previous purchase from their business.
They also use an online portal to communicate with you, and I informed the staff that the year prior my glasses sat in their shop for almost 3 weeks because they're portal did not reach out to me via email text nor phone call. She promised this had been fixed. Again, this year, my glasses sat there for over a week until I called myself to find out if they were ready.
Most disturbingly, when I went to pick up my glasses, I found I owed more money, which they could not immediately explain to me. Once again, out of my sight and behind the scenes, the opticians chatted with each other and tapped on their keyboards to then write on a sticky note "co-pay". This is despite me having already paid almost $200 as a co-pay for my lenses.
When they gave me the receipt, I went home and reviewed it with my VSP explanation of benefits. It was at this point I realized the optical shop had misrepresented what they received from VSP and had added additional fees to my responsibility. I contacted VSP who confirmed the version which I was presented by the optical shop was not the version that they had on file and was not how the optical shop was paid out. VSP tried multiple times to get in touch with management, who gave them the runaround and everyone put responsibility on someone else, finally responding "we will reach out to the patient and refund something".I raised this concern with local optical shop management, who brushed it aside, trying to downplay the incident as my lack of understanding, belittled me by suggesting I didn't understand how to read insurance benefits, and they would walk me through it line by line if necessary, but more so claimed to have refunded me the amount which was "misunderstood". It should be noted that this amount was not the amount identified by VSP as wrong, and was not the amount which I was charged in their semi itemized bill
This business is here to turn out patients like an assembly line and charge you more than a theme park and more unscrupulously than a used car sales person
Staff was accommodating in getting me in for an appointment when I had a concerning issue with my eye. After a particularly bad morning with car issues made me late, I was still able to get in. All stall was helpful and pleasant. Dr Tremblay was very friendly and put me at ease, relieving my concerns about my vision.
I had a really fantastic experience at Mann Eye Institute with every Ophthalmologist I saw! From my screenings and consultations to my surgery with Dr. Tremblay, and my follow up visits, they helped me make the best choices based on my personal goals and anatomy, allowed me to relax before the procedure, and most importantly, fixed my CRAZY eyes!
I never pursued LASIK previously, because my astigmatism and vision was so terrible I was afraid they'd say nothing could be done and I was stuck with my useless eyes. The absolute opposite was true!! And I will say, waking up and being able to SEE every day astonishes me still, even after 2+ weeks. I have one more follow up, then I'm good to go! I HIGHLY recommend Mann Eye. They really took care of me.
I couldn't be happier with my decision to get LASIK surgery at Mann Eye Institute. After returning from a trip abroad, I was determined to finally say goodbye to glasses and contacts. From the moment I walked in for my consultation, I felt welcomed and well-informed. Dr. Zimmerman explained everything clearly and made sure I felt confident about moving forward.
The surgery itself, performed by Dr. Brundrett, was quick and painless, lasting only about 15 minutes, with the actual LASIK procedure taking just a couple of minutes. The entire team was incredibly comforting and professional, helping me feel at ease throughout the entire process. (Pretty sure their giant stuffed animal is made of magic.)
The recovery was smooth and I immediately noticed a dramatic improvement in my vision. Being someone who has worn glasses since 9 and contacts since 14, this has been nothing short of a life-changing experience.
It's been a year since my surgery, and I highly recommend anyone considering LASIK to book a consultation at Mann Eye Institute. The entire staff is welcoming, informative, and truly cares about their patients. Thank you to Dr. Brundrett, Dr. Zimmerman, and the entire team for giving me the gift of clear vision!
Cost of my standard Lasik was $2,600 per eye, and with the VSP discount it came out to about $4,600 total. Overall, I had a good experience! The staff were friendly, and the doctors seemed really knowledgeable and experienced. I felt confident I was in good hands.
The only downside was surgery day. They had a lot of patients booked back to back, so there was a bit of shuffling between the exam room and waiting area, plus some long waits before the surgeon came in. It felt more focused on keeping things efficient for the doctors than making the experience super comfortable for patients, kind of like a production line vibe.
That said, the results were excellent, and I'm really happy with my vision now. I'd definitely recommend them to friends and family, just don't expect a super pampered or spa type experience.
My lasik experience was great, from the free consultation to setting up all the appointments and discussing payments with Grant at the north Austin location to the pre-op, surgery and post-op appointments at the south Austin location. The front desk ladies, Sadie and Kate, were super friendly and speedy. My techs, Valerie, Elvia and Alyssa, were super knowledgeable and put me at ease. Lastly my surgeon, Dr. Mann, was very nice and made sure that the procedure went smoothly. Definitely recommend Mann Eye and the whole team.
Yesterday was my first experience with Mann Eye Clinic in South Austin as I recently moved to the area. They were thorough, professional and efficient. My only criticism is their prices on their frames (like most Optometrists) are astronomically more expensive than what is available online. I wanted to purchase the same frame from Amazon for $250 while their discounted price w/insurance was $450 ($650 w/out insurance) and have them insert my new prescription lenses. They can do it but their policy is to charge me full price for the lenses rather than using my insurance. I don't care for that.
I had my yearly exam with Dr. Zimmerman on Friday. He was excellent! (The office decor is having a weekend 'redo'.) The staff is friendly, welcoming and very efficient. I'll be back!
Thank you for taking such good care of your patients.
