I found Dr. Birenbaum through VSP network. The eye exam experience was really good. Dr. Birenbaum was professional and charming. Jon helped us pick frames and lens. He seemed like a very nice guy. but I became suspicious because the price he charged for my iC! Berlin glasses was much higher than what I paid for the same brand before.
I contacted VSP and learned that Jon overcharged us almost double for both pairs of glasses. I called Jon to confirm and he immediately became a different person. Whenever I called, he was either not available or would promise to call me back but never did.
Thanks to the VSP representative who kept calling the store for weeks, the overcharges were fully refunded to me, but I got no explanation and no apology. Dr. Birenbaum knew what happened, but he did not contact me or meet me in person.
I would never buy anything from there again. If you do, please check your insurance benefit very carefully, because otherwise, you might get ripped off.
I have the store receipts and letters from VSP. I could attach them if needed.
Dr. Birenbaum is a master of his craft. Extremely knowledgeable and his a passion for his clients. VIP 5 star experience all across the board
I had an awesome experience at my eye exam. Dr. Birenbaum was so patient with my questions and took the time to ensure that I understood the process. I did not feel rushed or pressured and that is hard to find in any health exam or business these days. His employees mirror that same energy and helped me find exactly what I needed! I would recommend them simply for those reasons alone, not to mention the beautiful office and eyewear collections. I feel fortunate to have found them!!
Dr. Robert Birenbaum is the absolute BEST! Not only does he take his time with you on all the tests needing to be run for both eye exams & contact subscriptions, but he talks to you about what your day looks like. Are you on the computer, driving, reading, etc.. Taking all that into consideration instead of just the eye exam itself.
Dr. Robert Birenbaum is the only eye doctor I have been to in this area for the last 15 years that has been able to prescribe the correct contact lens and glasses. I can see again! YEAH!
ALSO, the staff that you come in contact with are super nice and so helpful with everything. I just enjoy going to see them. :)
Thank you for the best experience ever!
I bought bifocals w a 1.74 high index lens from Dr Birenbaum back in 2005 from his store Eye Pieces in West Village. The lens I received was much thicker than I was expecting, so I had the glasses inspected at another store. The optician showed me the index is etched on the edge of the lens. My lens was much lower than what I paid for. I reported the issue to Dr Birenbaum s office and was told they would fix it. They kept my glasses 2 weeks and when I got them back, the bifocal had been ground off. The index was still not what I paid for, and I complained again. He again took my glasses and kept them 2 weeks and returned them unrepaired. I reported the problem to my credit card company and they withheld payment in Visa Disputes.
I investigated Dr Birenbaum, he has been in trouble in Collin Conty, Dallas and Terrill for similar practices. I checked w the Collin Dallas County Clerks office there are several lawsuits filed in each county. He is well know among Dallas area Optical shops for fraudulent practices. Check state licensing, small claims court records and Better Business Bureau.
Dr. B was kind enough to make up for a minuscule oversight (charging me the incorrect co-pay) with a huge gesture- doubling the supply of lenses I ordered free of charge. I can't believe the level of humility and customer service Laura and the rest of his staff has offered to me, even when times are tough like this for all businesses anywhere. I am truly impressed and recommend this modern, efficient, and up and coming eye clinic :)
Extremely poor at follow up. I saw the doctor back in August but did not get lenses at the time, save for buying basic non-Rx reading glasses at CVS. Then in April I requested the prescription again for progressives, as it was time to get those. When I saw the Rx the level for reading was at 2.25, and I'd been wearing 1.0-1.25. I expressed concern to Lana, the front desk assistant, who said she'd talk to the doctor. THREE days went by with me calling each day, her telling me that he was busy but that she'd follow up with him, and saying that she was 'at the mercy of the doctor.' Another 3-4 days have passed since then and she has called or texted me to follow up. I ended up going to a different eye doctor to have my eyes rechecked, and as I had suspected, the Rx I was given was much weaker (softer) than the version he gave me. I will never go back to this doctor again.
UPDATE: Response to what the doctor wrote below. At NO point did anyone cite any restrictions or laws to me. All I ever got as a message from Lana was that the doctor was busy with patients, that he'd have a break later in the day, and that she'd follow up then.. For the record I did not ask for a new Rx; I simply expressed concerns. My expectation was that the doctor would call and talk to me about options (which could be coming in for a new exam, or telling me that the Rx was fine despite my concerns), or would pass on that information to Lana to share with me. If a person calling day after day is continually told that the doctor is busy and his assistant never says anything other than "she is at the mercy of the doctor" and she does not proactively share anything other info, it's natural for a person to conclude that the doctor doesn't care to follow up. Unfortunately, the ONLY way I got any response from Dr. B was to write this review. If someone had followed up with me when I was calling daily, this review would not have been necessary.
I had an amazing experience with Dr. Birenbaum and his staff. They provided exceptional service when helping me select the perfect frames. I visited three other places before visiting his office and was finally able to find the best frames for my needs. I couldn't be happier!
