Dr. Joel S. Cohen, MD

I am writing to share my experience at the Willowbrook office under Dr. Cohen's care, which I visited due to an emergency while my regular ophthalmologist was out of town. Unfortunately, the visit was marked by several concerning issues: Outdated Systems: The office relies on antiquated equipment and paper charts. There is no online portal for accessing records, scheduling, or communication, which creates unnecessary delays and confusion. Poor Record Access: When Dr. Cohen is not at the Willowbrook location, calls are transferred to his alternate clinic. However, that clinic cannot access patient records because they are stored on paper at Willowbrook. This means patients must wait until he returns to Willowbrook to receive any information about their own medical history. Unprofessional Communication: The receptionist who answered the phone sounded disengaged and unhelpful. I also experienced poor communication regarding billing. I called ahead to confirm the cost of my procedure and was told it would only be my specialist copay. Upon arrival, I was charged a different amount. While I was able to pay, this could be a serious issue for patients who are not financially prepared. Lack of Follow-Up: The office does not return phone calls and failed to send my records to my primary care physician, despite having made a referral. This lack of coordination is unacceptable and potentially harmful to patient care. If you prefer a practice that embraces modern technology and efficient communication, this office may not meet your expectations. I hope this feedback is taken seriously and used to improve the quality of care and service provided.

I am scheduled for eye surgery in October. It is Friday, Sept 1 and I have been trying to reach the scheduling nurse since Monday----5 days now. Despite numerous efforts daily (multiple times), the nurse will not return my call. I have left vm messages, I have had employees in the Willowbrook office trying to help. They have sent messages asking her to call me. The phone rings forever with no answer when I follow the prompts by phone to call her. I am at a loss for what to do. Dr Cohen will you contact? me? I am in your system.

My husband has seen Dr. Cohen for over 30 years now. If you're in a hurry, then this is not the place for you. Dr. Cohen see a lot of patients and he does not leave until the last one has been seen. He also sees patients 3 Saturdays out of the month so that means he only takes Sundays and a few Saturdays off. That is how dedicated he is to seeing his patients. Dr. Cohen is a very good doctor and he does care about his patients. My husband has a very bad astigmatism and we have tried seeing other doctors closer to where we live and they just cannot seem to get his prescription right. That is why we drive to 249 to see him. Now, we bring our 11 & 9 year old to see Dr. Cohen because we trust him.

I began taking my mother to Dr. Cohan in the mid 90s because of my own personal experience with him. My mom was suffering with a range of vision problems, with macular degeneration being the most significant. For the next 9.5 years Dr. Cohan did a brilliant job helping preserve my mom's vision. Certainly there were wait times, but I have yet to experience doctor visits that didn't have some wait times! Emergency or unique problems generally cause wait times, so people need to have patience. I noticed after reading negative reviews on Dr. Cohan that reviewers generally were people who always gave negative reviews! If you want a great eye doctor - see Dr. Cohan. Based on my experience you will not regret it!

Dr. Cohen was my Ophthalmologist for about 20 years. I am a Type 1 diabetic and over the years, I developed retinopathy that required extensive laser surgeries. He is kind, compassionate, and cares about his patients. His staff is also very knowledgeable and kind. I highly recommend this highly skilled physician without reservation. Thank you for all of the years of care you provided to me.

My entire family absolutely love Dr. Cohen as well as the entire staff. We have been patients of Dr. Cohen for more than 30 years. Dr. Cohen is very thorough with his exams, his patients eye health is extremely important to him and it shows with his examinations.

I have been seeing Dr. Cohen for years, he did my Cataract surgery, had no problems, and then I started seeing Dr. Markus. Who I think is the "Boom" I love how he spend time and make sure he is giving me the best care for my eyes. The office staff is always nice and friendly, and always willing to help. I will not go any place else for my eye care.

My wife has been ill with Glaucoma, Diabetes and numerous other illnesses for over 25 years. During this time she have been through a lot of doctors and insurance companies, most of which put only money first. Doctor Cohen is wonderfully different. He is the ONLY doctor who has always unselfishly put my wife health first, and has done everything possible to help her. He takes time with her and LISTENS to her. His office staff are kind and professional. My wife can see well today only because of the care Doctor Cohen has given her over the years. Thank you Doctor Cohen for all you have done for my wife. You are a true a blessing from God.
