We recently brought my 90-year-old father to the Low Vision Institute (Vision Rehabilitation) at the University of Houston, and I cannot say enough about how extraordinary this experience was.
Despite receiving injections for macular degeneration for the past two years, his vision has continued to decline. He also has glaucoma, and after at least four separate eye exams elsewhere trying to improve his glasses prescription, we were discouraged and running out of options. Nothing seemed to help.
From the moment we walked in the door, every single staff member was welcoming, kind, and organized. The front desk team, registration staff, checkout staff -- everyone treated us with patience and respect.
Our student clinician, Max, was exceptional. He spent nearly three hours carefully and thoughtfully evaluating my father's vision. He was patient, thorough, and creative in presenting practical options to improve day-to-day functioning. One of the most helpful recommendations -- and worth the entire visit -- was shifting away from trifocals and instead using single-vision lenses tailored to specific tasks. No one had explained this approach to us before.
When Dr. Jennifer Tasca joined us, she expanded on everything with even more insight and clarity. She was compassionate, deeply knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in helping my father regain as much independence as possible. Both she and Max were professional, personable, and incredibly kind.
This was not just an appointment -- it was life-changing for our family. We left with real solutions, renewed hope, and a clear path forward. I am profoundly grateful to this team and highly recommend the Low Vision Institute to anyone navigating vision loss.
I used to have very good experience here but after my recent visit and my husband's recent visit, I don't think we are happy with this place.
The exam always take very long. Mine took about 3 hours. My husband's visit took 4 hours. We missed an event after that afternoon visit. During the visit, everything went long and wrong. They would say, "I will be right back, " again and again... Even paying at the cashier took so long. I admire students practicing there. but after many things took so long, it could be upsetting. The doctor came at the end for less than 5 minutes.
My husband paid more than $500 in September for ordering a pair of glasses. Then, he received a text that he owed another $30, six weeks later. He called back because it's concerning. but, did not get the clarification from the cashier. The cashier said she would get someone from the glasses store to call back. None calls back. And, we still don't know if the glasses have been made because they have not notified us.
From my experience, they tried to upsell everything. I just needed a pair of reading glasses and I ended up paying about $300 for a pair.

Three strikes. They made me wait over 40 minutes with no updates till I went to leave. I want to see if they bill my insurances.
Last week at the family eye clinic they were rude. They saw every woman first but the males and I were made to wait. The two clerks at the window were absolutely rude. I talked to manager but I am not sure if the little attitudes got adjusted.
Today, the check in Hispanic older lady was sweet. The young black woman was rude beyond the pale. After waiting 35 minutes when all the female patients (and some who came after me just like last week were seen) were seen i was still waiting. They don't like men. Not sure if it is by design or just gendered.
There are plenty of choices. As my daughter said, if they are this bad now, what will they do after surgery.
It is not a free clinic nor do they discount. I have two insurances so they are not doing me a favor, i am getting them paid
If this is how the students are taught, I am never going back or to one of the graduates. The attitude of the students stink now. This is why I don't like racists and gender discrimination.

Awesome place!!!! I've been getting my eye exams here for 20 years....I'm still counting can't find no other place that gives the great job they give you when it comes to your health care for your eye exams.... very satisfied Thank you
I would only recommend this place to my worst enemy to sabotage them. This place is ridiculous. My total bill came out to 630 dollars, that is the most I've ever seen a simple appointment to rewrite my prescription for contact lenses cost. Most places will be $200 max. I also made it clear I am here just to redo my contact lenses prescription. That exam usually takes 30 minutes, here I was in exams for 3 HOURS. Who expects that??? I had other appointments to get to that day and I allowed ample time because no one expects a vision exam to last more than 30 minutes when you literally brought the previous prescription with you. I believe this was predatory behavior because I had insurance, they charged my insurance $400 on bullshit exams I didnt ask for. Never ever again. Unless you're going blind, this place is a waste of time.
3 hour visit, plus a follow up, only to end up with a prescription that left me unable to read clearly AND the girl who did my exam had stinky breath DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME GETTING AN EXAM HERE
After a 2 and a 1/2 hour visit without a dialation, I walked out with contacts that I couldn't see out of and was not happy with. The student Doctor could not figure out how to do an accurate prescriptio. On my Follow-up visit, a different student Doctor couldn't figure out either. Second visit, still no dialation and not a good fitting. I was overcharged and underserved.It was a total waste of time if I could give it 0 stars.I would. Now, i will have to go elsewhere and oay more money to get fitted for contacts.
