James River Eye Physicians

This is a good practice. The doctor I see is always professional and answers any questions that I have. The optician practice is good too, and there is plenty of selection. When I am there, check-in and check-out goes smoothly. But, actually getting a person on a phone there to make an appointment or order supplies is nearly impossible. You can leave a voice mail in the general voice mail box, but in my experience no one ever returns your call.

I want to send a special thank you to Nicole, Dr. Bashkoff, and Dr. McKee. My brother had 2 cataract surgeries (one in September and one in October 2025). Today (7 January 2026) he went for a routine eye exam with Dr. Bashkoff. When my brother told Nicole that he was having problems seeing, she was very instrumental in helping to determine that he needed a medical appointment for possible laser treatment for Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO). Nicole spoke to Dr. Bashkoff who then confirmed that my brother needed to see Dr. McKee for possible laser treatment. Dr. Bashkoff was kind enough to allow him to reschedule his eye exam appointment and then consulted with Dr. McKee to see if the laser treatment could be done immediately. Dr. McKee was so kind to help my brother within minutes of being consulted. My brother was able to receive the laser surgery which greatly improved the vision in his right eye. He was also scheduled for laser treatment in left eye for the following week and will be able to reschedule with Dr. Baskhoff soon after that appointment. Nicole, Dr. Baskhoff, and Dr. McKee were all amazing. Together, they ensured my brother received the best, fastest, and most appropriate care possible. We are so grateful to each of them for their genuine care and concern to ensure my brother received the proper and immediate care that he needed.

I had two frustrating experiences with this office. An incorrect card was charged, which caused issues with my FSA reimbursement, and I later arrived for a scheduled contact lens fitting only to be told I was not on the schedule. Both situations were inconvenient and disappointing. Better communication and organization would make a big difference

I have had a great experience with James River Eye Physicians. I was referred to them for evaluation and they scheduled me quickly. The office staff were friendly and quick, the medical staff were friendly and thorough, and Dr. McKee was caring and thoughtful each time I saw him, answering all my questions and double checking my chart. He even called me at home the night after surgery to check on me! I appreciate that they had written instructions for the surgery preparation, and the surgery scheduler Trish is very helpful and knowledgeable. I am having a second surgery on my other eye next month. I would recommend this office based on my experience.

Everyone in this practice deserves 10 stars. The best people and service in the state. Docs are so caring and the employees truly care about their community. It is obvious they are treated very well by their employer and that equates to 100% satisfaction all around.

The front reception desk is a mess! They are not polite and are not helpful. There is one lady that seems to great but she is so busy undoing all the mess of the others!! I do like the ophthalmologist but I'm switching for yearly eye exams. The optometrist will not listen to me when I tell her the RX she has given me isn't working out. $700 in glasses and she keeps blaming the lab. I've worn glasses for 48 years and I have never had this happen. Dealing with this office is awful. I typed this while standing in line over 15 minutes trying to check out.

I have come here for years and it USED TO BE great. Now I would not recommend this office to anyone. The front office staff is horrible. All rude, unhelpful, place you on hold constantly, or just flat out hang up on you. Me and my husband both had appointments scheduled around the same time but on different days. They rescheduled us both THREE different times which would be 6 appointments rescheduled altogether. One of the times they didn't even call to tell us they were rescheduling we just received a text saying they canceled our appointments with no notice. Another time they changed the time of our appointment without telling us. They have hung up on us NUMEROUS times its just absolutely ridiculous. When I finally went in for my appointment the front desk was not welcoming in the slightest as expected and once I was back in the room I did voice my concern about the numerous reschedules and terrible service and nothing was done other than being told that they have been hearing that a lot lately. We will not be going back which is ashame because I loved our doctor.

Very, very I repeat workers are very unprofessional. I have been going to James River for some years and I have notice that it's some new workers on board. The Dr. that I normally see she is awesome. Recently I have been calling the office. I have been placed on hold several times at least 5 minutes. Having to hang up and call back. The employee was rude and placed me on hold again. I was quoted the incorrect price and when I called back I was quoted a different price. I had to actually go to the office speak with manager because I didn't want to call due to the issues I've already had over the phone. At that time the manager spoke with me she was very nice at the time. The next day I came back just to get a copy of my prescription. While I was standing I overheard the manager ask the employee rudely "what does she want to do? Is she going to order the contacts or not"? I had to peek my head around the corner and advise her that I was only there to get a copy of my contact prescription. After that I decided to purchase my contacts elsewhere because of the way I was treated. I also have insurance coverage. Professionalism really needs to be addressed. I will not be going back.
