Marissa Locy, OD and her staff (Darius, Evan, etc.) were just the epitome of professionalism and excellence. I have an eye condition that had not been fully explained to me by anyone prior, and she quickly set the record straight & offered support. I had not been able to wear contacts in over 6 months, and Dr. Locy fit me for very comfortable, easy to order contact lenses that allow me to see 20-20 with an astigmatism (these are far more effective & far less expensive than my prior chain eye doctor). For these reasons, I exclusively use UAB/Callahan Eye Doctors & Staff, because they have only exceeded my expectations!
This should be a 10********** Star review for the entire staff at UAB Hospital Callahan Eye Center including, Dr Crosson and every medical technician I came in contact with today.Serious eye surgery today and it was awesome!!!! They should all be commended for their knowledge, professionalism and skills. This was a great experience for such a delicate procedure. Thanks to all very much and God Bless. Joe Musulman
Don't come to Emergency (at least on a Sunday), been waiting over6+hrs. now. Very inefficient. Later, informed by an employee, that it's like this all the time - so expect extensive wait times. UAB really needs to start addressing their deficiencies - they have plenty of them!
A family member had emergency surgery around 9 pm last week. Most everyone was very professional. I would like especially to commend L. McQueen also known as King of the IV. He was very gracious and accommodating, a grand representative for Callahan Eye Foundation for sure.
Not a good experience at all! They weren't able to help me at all I sat in there for almost 3 hours for them to tell me they don't know what's going on with my eyesight! The lady dilated my eyes and claim it was nothing wrong. Then she prescribed me some ibuprofen and Pepcid ac which can be bought over the counter and told me to use or warm or cold compress. She also told me to follow up with my eye doctor in 10 days. I take ibuprofen and other pain pills on the regular and nothing works! So I was very upset when she gave me that prescription with no explanation of why I'm having these issues with my eyes. Then the older white guy who gave me my discharge papers had a smart mouth when I requested a work excuse. When I asked him what was I suppose to do when I have another flare up he said with an attitude see an eye doctor, and this is an emergency room. They didn't even give me any protective sunglasses to wear outside knowing that they just dilated my eyes. Their service sucks!!
Irritation is not even the word to describe how I feel.... My son had an eye appointment, got here on time at 8 am. Tell me why we didn't leave till 1pm. Then my mom had to use the bathroom, the staff act like they didn't want to tell her. I didn't even want to give one star. UAB have been nerve wrecking.
As with everyone, we dont go because we're bored and looking for something to do. You go because you're having health issues. There isn't much that's more stressful than being unwell. I feel Callahan Eye Hospital understands that.
I generalize the whole facility because I've been a patient on multiple ends of it. Everything ive had to do from scheduling, surgery, seeing 2 specialists(Dr.Vaphiades who is only 1 of 2 that does what he does in the whole state of Alabama. Optic neurology) (and Dr.Albert. he is so awesome too.)
I have been met with the utmost professionalism, kindness, compassion and care. I DO HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
This eye hospital is so impressive. To me, my impression, imo, a WELL oiled machine. The whole system in my experience has been so organized, informative, stressless. They send you your paperwork online, you check in in advance through links they send you. So when you get there, you are ready to see the dr without filling out an hours worth of paperwork. As of yet 3 visits, I haven't waited more that 15-20 for my appt. He's been on time or shortly after. And THAT LOBBY IS FULL.
Everyone I meet is calm, poised and acts genuinely interested in your well being and in helping you. They make you feel like they care. So patient and professional. They're care that you understand the information they're giving you. You arent rushed. They make sure you can take your time to ask all the questions you need and are very thorough.
Its not shocking to me that they're that way when you consider where they work. It seems clear that the Callahan Eye Hospitals expectations of their employees are high. That there is a standard of care they expect to be met and they accept nothing less from them. Its obvious in the way everything has worked for me. Its just so impressive. They understand customer service and the needs of people dealing with stressful situations.
Im sure its not 100% perfect. Nothing is, but I haven't experienced it myself. I consider myself VERY fortunate given the serious unexpected life change I just went through to get to go through it with them. Im so thankful I can still see to write this. So far so good anyway. I hope it can stay that way. Thank you for everything. Xx

I was taken back super fast, I think I was in the waiting room less than 30 minutes. Granted I did go at night and they seemed less busy. It was very clean! The nurses were AMAZING, so kind to me. Labs were a breeze and they even got me water and a cold rag when I felt bad after. Dr. Johnson was absolutely amazing, he really listened to me. He treated me like a real person and not just a number. He was the first person I've seen out of three ERs that took my problem seriously and took the steps needed to find out why. He told me I wasn't crazy and that my symptoms were real. Thank you Dr. Johnson for listening to me and treating me so well. I love UAB!
