I can't say enough about the facilities and the faculty that was working at the UAB EYE emergency room. So grateful for their expertise and professionalism.
It's been a month since my surgery, my eyelid healing nicely.
Thank you so much!!!!
Oh by the way, I ripped my eyelid in Madison Alabama.
Huntsville/Madison emergency didn't have the faculty to repair my eyelid.
The emergency doctor told me to drive to UAB , 2 hours away.
This place is an absolute joke. I might even say it's a scam. It took SIX HOURS for Dr. Kubsad to see my husband. She was quite rude and unprofessional. She asked him "is your infection viral or bacterial?" to which my husband replied (with a chuckle of disbelief), "well, you tell me." She then put dilating drops in his eyes and left the room. After 45 minutes, I went to the front and told them his eyes were "good and dilated by now". ALL of the other exam rooms were empty. The assistant said they were "changing doctors right now". So I asked if we could just be discharged and she said she would get someone. Within about 3 minutes, Dr. Kubsad was back in our room. We checked in at exactly 1:30 pm and our discharge time was 8:17 pm. Do not waste your time or money on this place. Such a bad decision.
I took my 8-year-old son to the UAB Callahan Eye Emergency Clinic on 11/20/25 at 6:01 PM after the ER instructed us to follow up with an ophthalmologist within 1-2 days. We did not leave until 10:41 PM -- nearly five hours later -- without ever seeing a doctor.
We were taken to triage twice, asked the same questions twice, and then sent back to the waiting room both times. During the first triage, the nurse checked his eye pressure and vision, then told us there were no rooms available.
Nearly two hours later, a different staff member repeated the exact same questions and again sent us back to the waiting room.
Eventually we were placed in a room -- and still no doctor ever came.
The most concerning part happened when we were directed to the employee restroom, where I saw with my own eyes that:
Every other room in the back was dark, empty, and unoccupied.
My son was the only patient in the entire back area.
Meanwhile, the waiting room was filled with more than a dozen people waiting for hours.
Several staff members were sitting around on their phones while patients waited.
There was no legitimate reason for an hours-long delay.
I do not believe this falls on the nurses and staff alone. At some point, a doctor should have been concerned that no patients were being seen, despite a full waiting room. I do not believe this was a coincidence.
This setup appeared to create unnecessary wait times -- something that would make an insurance bill show "extended emergency care," even when no care was being provided.
To be clear:
We never saw a doctor.
My child was never evaluated.
We left without receiving a single piece of medical advice.
When I informed the nurse we were leaving, she asked me to sign an AMA (Against Medical Advice) form, even though we were never given any medical advice to begin with.
This experience was unacceptable, unprofessional, and concerning.
I would not recommend this facility to anyone. Patients -- especially children -- deserve real care, not hours of unnecessary waiting for the sake of appearance.
It bothers me that I even have to choose 1 star as that is beyond generous for such an unpleasant experience. The only smiling, decent person we encountered was the young lady cleaning the restrooms and hallways. So this star is for her!
You're told we'll get you back shortly for triage only to wait 4 hours and still no triage. Meanwhile you hear workers laughing and cutting up the whole time. I wouldn't come back here if my eyeball was falling out. We left after 4 hours with no triage. Save your time and money, wait till a professional facility opens in the AM.
I watched the entire World Series game in the waiting room and drove to Hoover to let my dogs potty and back and my spouse still had not been triaged. What kind of ER does not triage right away? How do you know who needs to be seen quickly? The worst experience I've had at any ER.
I have been at Callahan Eye Center since 5:30 pm with bilateral papilledema and disc hemorrhaging. I have been in pain for two weeks, see spots in my vision, and cannot tolerate bright lights for more than a few minutes. I was referred here by an eye doctor after trying to get a new prescription.
I was triaged at 7:30 pm and then shoved into a closet/makeshift room around 8:30 pm. Now I'm being told I am being discharged even though they have no idea what the underlying issue is and will not transfer me to UAB for a CT scan. I am forced to go to UAB ER on my own, hoping to be seen for imaging.
I went from being told I could lose my vision to being ignored and neglected by some of Birmingham's "top" doctors. I am scared, in pain, and have no reassurance that I will be okay. This experience was completely unacceptable.
Dr. King was the kindest Dr I've had in a very long time. I think I was there 1 hour max. I don't think there were but 1-2 other patients at 9pm though. Dr Day came by to take a look and see if he could see anything different from Dr king. Dr. King removed the metal shavings from my eye and she did an amazing job. Thank you.
Great service! I had a stye that became very infected, causing swelling in my face. I needed emergency surgery (referred from Medhelp on 280), where they drained the area and gave antibiotics. Everyone was super nice and helpful. The surgery was done with local anesthesia so I was in & out in under 2.5hrs on a Saturday. I didn't want to have to go but was happy for all of the help I received! I'm doing so much better after just a few days.
My husband had to be admitted for an infection under his eye. Every nurse and dr we have encountered has been great! They all truly care about the patients and are very friendly. They have great bedside manner. I recommend them to everyone that has anything wrong with their eye.
