After doing quite a bit of research, and 1 or 2 decisions to wait on cataract surgery, I finally decided that the longer-term benefits outweighed the decision to postpone the procedure. Fortunately, I also had the advantage of talking to people who had the surgery and were happy with their outcomes. Most were patients at the Alaska Lasik & Cataract Surgery Center.
Setting up the appointments and the first visit was very easy and efficient. My pre-procedure meeting was both thorough, informative and, most of all, reassuring and supportive. From the initial measurements and tests Shawn did, to the just incredible review process and time Dr. Hummel spent with me, I can say that their reputation for excellent care and customer service ranks as some of the best I've experienced. I came away from the visit on Monday, January 5th, feeling more assured that this next step involving my "windows to the world" is in good hands.
My cataract surgery on January 26 and 27 restored visual clarity and nearly eliminated the need to glasses. The staff, from the reception desk and administration to the nurses in the prep and operation area, to Sandy's work as the anesthesiologist, to ultimately Dr. Lena Hummel, kept me both informed, comfortable and convinced that I was getting the best care possible.
I truly can't thank everyone enough for helping me make this medical journey a success. Top notch!
Thank you to all at Alaska Lasik & Cataract Center!
Took less than five minutes from when I laid down to sat up and I was able to see Crystal clear there is not one knife involved. I felt nothing and I saw nothing. If you have fears, you have nothing to worry about.doctors and staff were extremely helpful. I would recommend to anyone in a heartbeat. Amazing amazing place. It will change your life forever.
I found Dr Hummel to be competent and patient even consenting to me praying over the procedure before she started. And Sandy their anesthesiologist was calming and competent as she walked me through experiencing the process without anesthesia. It all went very smoothly. Thank you.
Dr Coulter explained my options fully. He has an engaging bedside manner, is thus easy to talk to, discussed realistic expectations, and gave me all the time I needed to ask questions. I have been in the medical field for over 30 years, and have interacted with many doctors. Dr Coulter has exceptional people-skills to complement his expertise as a surgeon. I will be recommending Dr Coulter to friends who will be needing cataract surgery.
UPDATE:
After the preliminary appointment, I made the decision to get the trifocal intraocular lens which represents the latest technology. The surgical experience for the first eye two days ago was pretty stress-free because of the wonderful team of nurses, anesthetist , and Dr Coulter himself. There was no pain, just fairly minor intermittent sensations of pressure. Dr Coulter advised that it will take weeks to achieve my maximum visual clarity in that eye, but just two days post-op I can already appreciate an improvement in my vision and am very pleased. I am looking forward to getting cataract surgery in the second eye next month. With Dr Coulter and the same surgical support team in mind, I am anticipating another easy surgical experience that pays huge visual dividends.
UPDATE:
Second eye surgery was performed by Dr Coulter and the same surgical support team two days ago. Exceptional overall positive surgical experience again. Saw optometrist DrBerthol in post-op follow-up today. She was very pleasant, confirmed my improvement in vision, and reinforced post-op do's and don't.
Without reservation I recommend Dr Coulter and his team at Alaska Lasik and Cataract Surgery for the gift of much better vision through amazingly easy cataract surgery.
