Visual Processing Insitute

Dr. McCartin and the Visual Processing Institute have been nothing short of a miracle. My grandmother suffered a stroke in June which severely impacted her vision. She went from reading 6+ hours a day to barely being able to distinguish between certain letters due to how severely her vision was impacted. We were all heartbroken at the thought of my grandmother permanently losing her ability to engage in one of her favorite pastimes. In the aftermath of the stroke, I quickly discovered there are virtually zero accessible resources for individuals with post-stroke vision impairment/loss. However, after some long hours of thorough research, I found the Visual Processing Institute and was amazed by the cutting edge technology and therapies they offer individuals with visual impairment and loss caused by not only a stroke, but a myriad of other factors including concussions and brain tumors, just to name a few. My grandmother soon thereafter began her journey in recovery at the Visual Processing Institute and the results have been absolutely ASTONISHING. My grandmother is now not only is able to see letters clearly and to put words together again, but she is also STARTING TO READ again after just 4 months of therapy! She now has hope that she will eventually be able to read again at the speed she did pre-stroke and she is elated by her progress. This is all because of Dr. McCartin and her amazing therapists. My family and I are so incredibly grateful to the team at the Visual Processing Institute, and cannot thank them enough for showing such kindness, compassion and encouragement during what has been one of the most difficult seasons of our lives. I cannot recommend the Visual Processing Institute enough and hope that anyone considering joining as a patient will not hesitate to begin vision therapy with them. Can I give this more stars? Please? One of my children was referred to vision therapy by a doctor and in scouring the web to find someone, I stumbled upon Dr. Baker and never looked back. After the initial consultation and test, I was blown away by the technology and approach to correcting issues. Being familiar with lens optics and three dimensional photography, a lot of what Dr. Baker was saying clicked with me and made complete sense. After a few visits and talking with Dr. Baker about other patients she has seen and the reasons why, I had another child of mine tested and ended up having two kids in therapy. The difference has been astounding! Between improved reading, self-confidence, behavior, sports, my wife and I feel we "almost" have two different kids as they have come so far! Thank you to Dr. Baker and her team for all they've done for our two kids. Best internet search & find we've ever done!!!!!

Short review: Dr. McCartin truly saved my career/ life. I thought I could never get my sight and mind back. Long review: I had, what I thought at first, was a minor concussion. It felt like waking up with the worst hang over of my life for months. The PC in charge of my injury made me go through acupuncture, physical therapy, speech therapy, and more things that I can't even remember. It was a bit over a year since it happened, and I still couldn't get back to myself. I would forget and misunderstand everything. All the intelligence I've worked for, my entire life, felt like it was gone. I had horrible trap pain, neck pain, headaches, dizziness, nausea and terrible forgetfulness. (I've been injected 7 times in my traps with anti pain injections and did nothing to me). The first visit with the Dr. McCartin, she took so much time talking to me about every single little symptom, every injury I've ever had, and all of the treatments the PC has put me through. As it turns out I've had a history of concussions and this last one was the cherry one top. She knew about my symptoms better than I could remember them, and express them myself. She was SO truly understanding of my pain and knew exactly what I needed to feel better while I was at the office. I felt validated for the first time in over a year. All of the therapy the PC had put me through was the complete opposite to what I was supposed to be doing, it was the reason such minor concussion had caused such chaos in my life, I would've never known had it been for her. The Dr. and therapist gave me such amazing treatment I was even able to get rid of contacts and glasses all together, because the contacts I was wearing previous to this last concussion were needed because of my history of concussions. Dr. McCartin truly knows her profession and you can tell she's so passionate about what she does. She's one of the two doctors I've ever visited who profoundly care about people and not just making money of people. She's saved my life and I'm finally been able to recover my mind, eyes and ability to be back to myself. She validated me every single time, when all other professionals kept on wondering what was wrong with me or gaslighting me about my symptoms. Shes one of the few doctors that finds cures, not just treatments. The cure to what I thought I'd have for the rest of my life.

We were referred to the visual Processing Institute and went through the process. My 10 year old son was given a prescription and was recommended to attend 36-40 weeks of therapy to improve his eyesight. The cost of the sessions at 166$/per is considerable so the expectation to treat and improve his eyesight was steep. But I wanted to help my son. Upon receiving his prescription my son complained about the glasses as being too intense and blurry. We went for a second opinion to a developmental optometrist. The new optometrist found vastly different results. She recommended he only wear reading glasses on occasion for reading and testing, vastly different from Dr. McCartin's diagnoses of needing them all the time. The recommendation for therapy was also different. We were provided with cards and games to improve his tracking, visual acuity, and visual memory free of charge. My son has his glasses and has no complaints. He said they were much better than the previous prescription. The diagnoses and therapy recommendations made by Visual Processing Institute seems, after a second opinion, engineered to create clients for very expensive therapy. While the staff and Dr. McCartin were kind and accommodating, the needs of my son seemed not to be genuinely served for his benefit, but to engage in drawn out, costly, and unnecessary therapy. This is only my experience alone with Visual Processing Institute and the result was disappointing, especially when dealing with the guilt every parent carries when trying to help their child.

You can trust that your child will receive the highest level of care under Dr. Baker's guidance. In conclusion, Dr. Baker is an outstanding pediatric optometrist who exceeded all my expectations.
