Dr. Ivan P. Hwang, MD

My mother was referred here by her primary doctor for chronic eye issues, and this was one of the worst medical experiences she's ever had. Dr. Ivan Hwang was dismissive, unprofessional, and made several inappropriate comments during her visit. He told my mother--who primarily speaks Spanish--that she should know English or Mandarin by her next appointment, and he said she shouldn't need a translator. He was also rude to his staff, even going off on a tangent about climate change after scolding an assistant for throwing away a Kleenex box. The entire appointment was uncomfortable, tense, and disrespectful. Despite my mother trying to explain her ongoing eye concerns, he brushed everything off as "dry eye" without listening or examining her thoroughly. No patient should ever be treated this way. Language should never be a barrier to care, and kindness should be the bare minimum in any medical setting

I have been a patient of Dr. Hwang since 2012. I find him to be a wonderful doctor and human being. He has given me amazing care, and is so caring. He is just terrific.

My mom saw Dr Hwang for double vision. He didn't do anything to help other than writing a normal prescription and have her getting glasses in his office. Fortunately, we found another ophthalmologist that helped by adding prism to her glasses, which turns out to be common practices for correcting double vision problems. So disappointed in Dr Hwang!

I had an appointment scheduled on the 6th of June. Somehow, it did not get entered into their system and as such, I was told that I could not be seen that day. A new appointment was made for the 13th of June. When I arrived and was seen by Dr. Hwang's assistant, I was told that I was scheduled to have a complete eye exam including an exam for glasses. I declined as the original entropic surgery had not yet proved to be successful. When I met with Dr. Hwang I told him of the missed appointment. Dr. Hwang had a young trainee with us in the exam room. My 9 year old grandson was also there. I told him that the missed appointment was really no big deal but he insisted that I tell him which of his staff had sent me away on the 6th. He had the trainee go to the front and bring the staff member into the room. In front of the trainee, my grandson and myself, he proceeded to give the staff member all kinds of grief. She was obviously embarrassed . I observed his body language and the staff members body language. It was clear that one of them felt very uncomfortable and small. I was embarrassed for everyone in the room. Dr. Hwang's behavior was absolutely unacceptable. I have had dozens of employees over the course of my career and would never put any one of them in that position.

I checked in with the front office 10 minutes early and was seen 40 minutes later, almost 1 hour.The new assistant was very friendly and helpful. She wrote down all my reasons & concerns for my visit. Once she was done I then had to go out and wait again for the doctor. When he walked in he barley greeted me and began to review the notes. He began to lecture the assistant in a demeaning manor. He told her he doesn't have 3 hours to be reading notes and that everything she list WAS NOT important.When I stepped in to let him know that my concerns were all important he cut me off to tell me I needed to wait till he was done talking with his assistant. He was a completely RUDE with ABSOLUTELY no bedside manor. He was not only inappropriate & demeaning to his staff (assistant) but also myself, the patient. I would run the other way if anyone recommends his office ( Walnut Creek, Antioch, Brentwood).

My mom is 82 and she had cataract surgery at this clinic on April 24 2019 We could not be more happier with results so far.

Dr. Ivan Hwang was incredibly kind and attentive. He listened carefully, answered all my questions, and made me feel at ease throughout my visit.
