I was a patient of this practice for decades, dating back to the 1990s, originally under Dr. Hines and Dr. Cushing. I received excellent care for many years, including very successful laser treatment, and this office was widely trusted by professional athletes and long-term Denver patients alike.
After both doctors retired and the practice was sold, I returned in July after moving back to Denver for an annual exam with a new doctor. While the clinical exam itself was fine, the administrative experience was not. After paying in full for my exam, I requested my eyeglass prescription so I could obtain reading glasses and was refused due to unexplained billing and insurance issues. I was then told I would need to schedule and pay for another appointment instead.
Under federal rules, eyeglass prescriptions must be released after an exam regardless of insurance status. The inability to explain charges while withholding my own prescription felt administratively hostile and unnecessarily obstructive.
Unfortunately, this is not the practice it once was. I've chosen to move my care elsewhere and would caution others to be aware of potential administrative barriers when requesting records or prescriptions
Just tried to book an appt. I left a vm on a SUnday after leaving the ER so i could get right in as requested. Iwaited until Monday at 3pm. What a mess, sat on hold forever (have the call logs to prove it.) when i pointed out about the voicemail, they argued we dont work on SUnday...then i said shut it off and tell people to call back during biz hours. Yikes nuthin but attitude. So i passed up all days options as again its urgent to get in. On hold again...so instead of just scheduling it up front and getting the. neccessary info like referrals, insurance, extra it was constant on hold, dropping the line. Then when i ointed out there seemed to be an issue she flips it on me. She started at the word go....been to dozens of Drs offices over the years. 30+ surgeries, moved all over so been parts many different health plans, dr offices, health systems. You gain a lot of experience just by the volume of interactions.
One thing ive always learned if your having a problem with the staff...it'll never be right (billing, interactions, appt). Dr might be great but I learned never go back if the staff off kilter enough to cause issues. Then I read all the 1 stars on here....how it happened to me as well. Its like taking crap from neighborhood Jersey kids. When its the first time outta the North East. 1100 miles/hr mouth and tossing burning hot attitude doesnt work.
Might need to cancel and find another.
I've been to this ophthalmologist office a couple of times, and every visit has been disappointing. At my most recent appointment, I waited in the exam room for almost 45 minutes with no communication. I finally stepped out to let them know I needed to leave for work because I had been waiting so long. Dr. Tessa had been standing right outside my door chatting with a coworker, and only then did she say, "Ok, let me see you now."
When she finally came in, she saw me for barely two minutes. After waiting that long, the visit felt rushed, careless, and very disrespectful.
On top of that, I spent almost two weeks calling the office every single day about my prescriptions. A staff member named Pam kept telling me they were "short-staffed" and that the technician hadn't had time to review the prescription for insurance. Every day I called, they repeated the same excuse. It was clear they did not care about their patients' well-being or urgency.
I finally gave up and saw another doctor today after waiting three weeks for this office to send my prescriptions. The new doctor sent my prescription to the pharmacy immediately, right after I left the office.
I'm extremely unhappy with this place. I don't usually write reviews, but these experiences were frustrating and unprofessional enough that people should know. I do not recommend this office at all. There are many other places and doctors who respect your time and actually care about providing proper medical care.
I did not have a good experience at my recent appointment especially with the front desk staff. When I went to pay, the receptionist was curt, it took her awhile to find my insurance information and then informed me I had already had an appointment in this calendar year. I did exactly one year ago and she informed me that my appointment has to be at least one year and a day since my last appointment. At my other Drs., they check this before scheduling an appointment for me. Furthermore, I was told I had an appointment with Dr. Coco, but when I sat down for the exam I was told Dr. Leu would be in shortly. I told her I thought my appointment was with Dr. Coco and just said no. (Dr. Leu is fine and very friendly, but I was expecting Dr. Coco). The chair I sat in for my exam was old and the seat was taped to repair a hole or tear.
We were cataract surgery patients of Dr. Hines, a board certified M.D. opthamologist, and the founder of Hines Sight. We scheduled a follow up visit with the new "doctor" since Dr. Hines had retired. We were shocked to discover that the office had no records for us and had no clue who we were. What happened to our medical records? The new "doctor", Justin Coco, is an O.D., not an M.D. There are no M.D.s associated with this practice, just one O.D. and two optometrists. Dr. Hines has not been with this practice since 2017! We believe that calling the practice Hines Sight and listing Dr. Hines' bio prominently on the home page of the website is very misleading. We don't think a good doctor/patient relationship starts with misleading patients. We won't be back.
Dr. Lau is amazing -- she really took the time to understand everything about my eyes. And Mike provided the best eye exam I've ever had! Amazing service and patient care.
The front office was extremely friendly and welcoming, unfortunately, I did not go in to make friends, I went to get Lasiks. I highly suggest seeking out a different Optometrist if these are the services you are looking for. This office seemed like it had decent ratings and was moderately priced. I did not want to go to a super cheap place because after all, this is a voluntary surgery. After the surgery, I had my right eye (dominant) go completely bloody and blurry, while my left healed rather quickly. I called and they said it was normal and that I'll see them for a follow up appointment. My eye was still 90% bruised about 2 weeks later when I went in again, and again, I was assured everything was fine. I had another follow up two weeks later and they tested my vision. My eyes were off. My left eye now has a better vision than my right and they even tried to convince me that they were the same, that explained the headaches. After like 3 follow up visits Dr. Coco finally accepted that yes, my eyes were off and if it were him he would get the other eye "touched up" this means going back into surgery and taking the super goopy eye drops were everyone stares at you for another two weeks in one eye. They said they would call with a follow up appointment and they never did.
Also, one thing to note, on my 3rd follow up they left me in an exam room for an hour and fifteen minutes with no contact or check-ins whatsoever. I thought they actually closed and went home while I was in there and had to look under the door crack to make sure the lights were still on. When Dr. Coco finally came in he apologized and said they are a bit busy, looked at my eye for about 4 minutes said, we should schedule another follow up appointment and left.
Please please look into going to a different optometrist other than Dr. Coco unless you want to go through the headaches (literally) of having a sub par at best procedure.
The photo is 2 weeks post-op

If I could give zero stars, I would. Dr. Hines did all of my procedures until Dr. Coco took over. Dr. Hines was absolutely wonderful, and when he ran the ship all his staff were wonderful too. I don't necessarily have an issue with Dr. Coco, but since he took over, the staff he hired are incredibly rude and condescending. The front desk staff are okay for the most part, but the techs are absolutely terrible, rude, and abrasive. They'll treat you like you're an idiot when you're following their directions. There are lots of other ophthalmologists in town; go find one whose staff will treat you better. It's your money after all, you don't need to spend it on a place where the help treat you poorly.
