Dr. Michael E. Summerfield, MD

Dr Sommerfield performed cataract surgery on me at the Surgery Center in Cumberland Md. He seemed nice but is another Dr seeing wayyyy to many patients and in a hurry. I advised both him, and the anesthesiologist several times prior to my surgery... right up to 5 mins before being wheeled into surgery...THAT I HAD AWAKENED BEFORE DURING ANOTHER SURGERY, and did not want that to happen again. Everything acknowledged that they understood, but yet, I became VERY ALERT during the first cataract surgery to the point I recall enough that the nightmares won't stop. I'm also now on a new anxiety medicine thanks to the whole experience. Dr Sommerfield was advised of the possibility that I could wake up/become fully alert as was the anesthesiologist five mins prior to rolling me into that ER. Instead of giving it a few mins to see if the anesthesia would be effective he jumped right in with no consideration for the patients prior medical history. UNACCEPTABLE. Had he waited 2/3 mins I'd be sleeping at night instead of reliving that horror everytime I close my eyes. THREE MINUTES WAS JUST TO LONG TO WAIT TO SEE IF ID STAY ASLEEP AND NOT BE TRAUMATIZED AGAIN. Dr and anesthesia BOTH were aware PRIOR, but in a hurry to chase that $ you disrespected and disregarded my physical and mental well being....Remember me? I was your patient, but absolutely never again.

Dr. Summerfield and his team are the absolute best and I can't begin to express how grateful I am to him and his colleagues for their expert care. I live in NYC, but after a very bad experience with cataract surgery on my right eye, which had significant complications and required a revision surgery--I was terrified of having surgery to remove the cataract from my left eye and put it off for months. However, after a dear friend from Baltimore (where I was born and raised) suggested Dr.Summerfield at the Washington Eye Institute, I had a consult while visiting and quickly decided he was the one to do it--he won my confidence immediately. Absolutely brilliant, down-to-earth and incredibly kind, he and his staff--unlike my past experiences--gave me the easy and amazing recovery and result I heard was possible after cataract surgery. Now, having had three cataract surgeries with three different doctors--one on each eye, as well as a revision on the right--I can say, without hesitation or reservation, that Dr. Summerfield, his staff, and his facility were the absolute best. And I say this having gone to the one of the best eye doctors in NYC for the revision on the right. Some doctors treat you like a number with routine surgeries like cataracts--Dr. Summerfield knows there will be a person living with this vision for the rest of their life (I'm in my 40s)...and he was thoughtful and thorough during his consult, with state of the art equipment that gave me excellent refraction, corrected an astigmatism, and left me with better than 20/20 vision in my left eye. (I am writing this 2 days after my procedure.) After my first surgery in NYC, I lived with binocular dysfunction and a vestibular imbalance for two months, which was impossibly awful, and the revision surgery I had with one of the "best" docs in NYC, while it erased those aforementioned conditions, is still far from perfect-- having left a doubling of vision in the right eye that is still at play seven months later. My only regret is that I didn't know of and go to Dr. Summerfield from the very beginning. He is a consummate professional, and one of those rare doctors who is passionate about what he does and cares deeply about their patients. When and if I ever need any further correction of my eyesight--I will be heading to Dr. Summerfield at the Washington Eye Institute again. So many thanks to all of you!!!!

I booked an appointment online, however, I'm not able to receive a confirmation email. After few days I tried to contact the office, call wasn't picked up. I texted the number (patients are suggested to text that number for appt matted) shows on the website, no reply.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Michael E. Summerfield and his staff for the Excellent care I received during my visits. No doubt, Dr. Summerfield you always go above and beyond and work tirelessly towards a healthy conclusion. Over the past year, I have gotten to know you very well. I feel blessed to know you and have you as my doctor. . I never thought I would be able to see as clearly as I do after my cataract surgery. In any surgery you never know what to expect, I was very uneasy before the surgery. However, your kindness and professional manner put me at ease. After surgery, my vision improve so drastically and I am very pleased with the results. Dr. Summerfield, I really admire your dedication with which your conduct your work. You are definitely a tribute to Washington Eye Institute You are not only an amazing doctor but most importantly you are a great human. I could not be happier with Dr. Summerfield as my Ophthalmologist. He is highly educated and experienced, having been trained at top schools. But what really makes him terrific is how he treats his patients. This became clear to me from the moment I walked into his office. His warm and friendly demeanor and his willingness to take the time to answer questions, immediately made me comfortable. I knew that I had found someone I could trust. Dr. Summerfield is a most impressive ophthalmologist. Most importantly, he saved the vision in my right eye. This eye had several serious problems. I was also being treated by a retina specialist. This specialist recommended I have a vitrectomy in the hospital. This is serious surgery. Unfortunately, my eye never regained vision. I was quite concerned. After testing, many appointments, and his expertise, Dr. Summerfield realized that the stitches in my eye had been sewn too tightly, causing my blurred vision. He proceeded to remove some of these stitches, one by one. This required precise and very careful removal of each stitch. He was so gentle and kind. Eventually, my eyesight returned! I was very relieved and happy with Dr. Summerfield. HE SAVED MY EYESIGHT! HE IS BRILLIANT!

Dr. Summerfield is amazing! I got ICL done and it's life changing!! I heard about him from my friend. My eye sight was terrible. I've had poor nearsighted vision and astigmatism throughout my life. By the time I saw Dr. Summerfield, I was at about -10 for my nearsighted vision and -4 to -5 for my astigmatism. Practically blind without glasses. I didn't qualify for lasik or PRK due to such strong prescriptions. My friend (who also had poor vision and received ICL) was telling me how it was life changing for her, so I got really interested. I actually heard about ICL a few years ago. Just a few years ago, the lens did not have correction for astigmatism. I also didn't know anyone who received ICL, so I was very hesitant. Few years later, two of my friends got ICL done and told me how amazing it is to see clearly. So, I decided it was time for me to throw away my super heavy glasses. It's now been 4+ months post surgery and I couldn't be happier. I can see clearly without glasses!! I do plan on getting a pair of glasses for night time driving because I still have a little bit of astigmatism left, which was expected prior to surgery. The lens for ICL only has up to a certain degree. Just leaving this for anyone out there who is contemplating about the less commonly heard ICL procedure in case you don't qualify for Lasik or PRK and you really want to see clearly.
