I've gotten used to rushed medical visits where the overworked clinicians appear stressed and out of time. Not at Parrelli Optical at Assembly Square! The clinicians were knowledgable and helpful. They invited questions and seemed truly interested in my attaining the best vision possible from my contacts and glasses. One practitioner had me try 4 different contact lenses to make sure we were getting the best fit. When I tried on glasses and couldn't find just what I was looking for, the associate said she would be glad to research what might work for me and order some different samples. It was a pleasure to deal with this office.
There is nothing lower than 1 star so there you go! The eye exam itself was fine. The doctor was nice enough and it was very straight forward. He was in network with my vision insurance. I've only lived in MA for almost 2 years.
The out front glasses that's a whole different story! They are a nightmare!! They lied about my insurance. Charged me entirely too much. It's been a couple of weeks and even though I paid over $800 for a very simple prescription, I have NO glasses. They will NOT call me back whoever it is that is supposed to call me me because the person who answers the phone, when they do answer the phone, can't help me.
My bank is in the process of disputing the charges now. Oh yeah, when I told them I can no longer wear contacts due to excessively dry eyes, something the doctor concurred during the exam, the girl spent about 20 min of my time trying to get me to get a contacts exam and just "try" the new contacts. She simply would not hear that I wore them for decades but can't any longer. It's simply too painful and it's likely the fact that I wasn't the most fastidious with them as a teenager and college student. Could have simply been a side effect of the chemotherapy I had a number of years ago. Doesn't really matter I've been down that road and it's not a thing I can do. I don't need to be "convinced" otherwise.
Do not go here you will not get your glasses and you will pay a lot of money. The glasses part was not in network with my plan and they lied to me about this. I paid over $800 and if the glasses ever show up, which seems unlikely at this point, I will owe another $800. An in network glasses provider it would cost just over $200 for exactly the same glasses and prescription. Apparently they should know this and they were supposed to tell me that only the doctor was a network not the glasses shop but they didn't.
Total scammers!
I have to update as their front staff's continued unprofessional behavior is really starting to strike a nerve with me. I called them earlier in the month to get my contact prescription. I was told that I didn't have a contact prescription with them. I didn't pay for that. I gave them my receipt number and it took them 30sec to find the words "contact lens exam" on their copy of it all the while they were informing me that I didn't pay for contact lens exam. So once they discovered that I did have a contact eye exam they claimed they would speak to the doctor and get back to me. Apparently he has to release the prescription.
Of course she never called back and today I had to speak with another jerk who repeated the same bs but added a few more lines of crap. I repeated my experience above but when she found my receipt she searched through my patient file and noticed that I had older prescriptions. Because I was a long term customer of theirs. She wanted to know the brand and power of the lenses that I was requesting. I told her the ones the doctor gave me and guess what happened?
The power of the lenses that he gave me do not match the non-existent prescription that I didn't pay for in their records. The brands matched just not the power. So now she wanted me to try another power of lens, the one that matches the prescription. I would have to go back to that house of disorder and pick up more lenses from them! Not wanting to extend my contact with these gaslighting creeps even longer, I declined.
I told her I am even more uncomfortable with this now because the lenses that were given to me to try do not match their records and despite her not being present at my doctors appointment she mansplained to me that he gave me two powers to try out and I needed to pick the one I liked better. When I complimented her in her imagination like a true gaslighter she switched gears and told that they didn't have my prescription in stock so he gave me the closest prescription to try. My doctor did not mention that to me. I'm exhausted keeping up with their excuses:
- no prescription
- more than one prescription
- you were suppose to try 2 different ones but you only tried one
- we didn't have it in stock so the ones you tried are wrong and you have to try a new pair
At this point I don't know what to do other than to demand a refund and go somewhere else. I'm not comfortable with their quality of service.
I do not recommend but if you do choose to go, make sure you get itemized receipts and walk out with your prescription. Do not allow them to hang on to them.
For her to go though my patient record and pull up years old prescriptions to quiz me on them when all she needed to do was look at the valid one all the while attempting to get me to agree to some more free lenses is not a manipulation tactic I'm going to fall for. Major red flag!
The doctor exam was good. I really like the care they provide but the front end staff are liars and I've tried but I feel like I've wasted about 1200 in uncomfortable glasses based on their recommendation. I spent time with them and told them what I needed.
For example, I tell them I'm allergic to metal and they say the frames are titanium so I buy them and break out in a rash behind my ears. What they should have said is that the frames are nickel and titanium. So now I put medical tape on the ends of my $700.00 pair of glasses.
They show me an ultra light weight pair of glasses and then when I buy them with the prescription and they are no longer light weight they say, "oh yeah the lenses are different". They dig into my nose and are painful to wear.
But the last straw is that I wanted to buy some contacts from somewhere else and that company called to get my prescription and Parrelli Optical lied to them and said I am not a patient there. So now I have to go talk to the liars one more time to get my contact prescription and this will be the last time they waste my time and money.
I've been a customer of Parrelli Optical for about 12 years, and what keeps me coming back is their unwavering commitment to care, precision, and trust. Finding the right optician when you have astigmatism isn't easy--I spent months searching for someone who could truly get it right. Parrelli did. It wasn't just about the prescription; it was about their willingness to take the time, across multiple visits, to really fine-tune what I needed.
Jonathan Parrelli, Nichole, and Freddy have all played a part in building that trust over the years. They're not just experts--they're kind, consistent, and deeply respectful of the process. That kind of service is rare, and it's the reason I wouldn't go anywhere else.
Please trust me and do not support Parrelli optical. Have used them for years with a steady decline in competency and customer service. My last 2-3 years experience includes hearing from former staff that the owner is so unsupportive that the employees were buying toilet paper, ordering frames and literally given another color, told mine was on back order and would come in a couple weeks, only for them never to call and me never to get the actual frames I bought. I've had lens replacement that they didn't take the care to place new lenses symmetric in the frames (sticks out in front on one side, in back on other despite similar prescriptions) and when I expressed I didn't approve of the quality they said they'd have owner call me and still waiting. They also tried to charge me the wrong percentage off from my eye insurance so instead of a certain percent off the actual cost, they attempted to take the percent off the smaller remainder so I'd end up paying out of pocket more than I should. I am a health care provider and not a nagging annoying customer and this is not a place with integrity.
Parrelli Optical Assembly has been my go-to for two years, offering an extensive and stylish range of glasses and contact lenses. Not only are the glasses stylish, but they also come with a great warranty and demonstrate commendable durability.
Each member of the team that I've had the pleasure of dealing with has been outstanding, contributing to a seamless and enjoyable experience. A special shoutout to Edgar, Nicole, and Freddy, who have been incredibly helpful in scheduling my exams and assisting me with my glasses and contact lenses. Their dedication to customer service is truly commendable.
Comprehensive eye exams and a variety of contact lenses are also available, meeting all my eye care needs. A big thank you to the entire team, including the Saturday staff and the doctor, for their outstanding assistance. Highly recommended!
I have given this place one star because there is nothing lower. I have been a patient for almost 20 years (started at the Porter Square site), and I cannot explain what is happening to it.
Despite having several contact lens fittings since 2021, I am still in a prolonged wait to receive them. Initially, the pandemic affecting the manufacturing of contact lenses was an understandable hurdle. However, at this point, the extended delay is not just inconvenient, but also disrespectful to patients like me.
At the last appointment in late 2023, I heard all the excuses. Jonathan Parrelli even promised to make telehealth calls to update me on the status of my contact lenses. I even saw him checking his call schedule, but the calls have yet to happen. It is an awful feeling when you can tell someone is lying to your face; I still try to believe. After my exam, I was told to pay for the contacts in advance, so I did, and nine months later, NOTHING. I keep calling but have yet to make progress.
Now, I want my money back and go somewhere where my sight is important!!
It's disheartening because I've referred several people to this business, believing in its quality of service. However, the current situation is a far cry from what it used to be, leaving me and others feeling let down.
There are a lot to complain about this place. To be fair, I think the store manager tried but the eye exam service was so poor. It was the worst experience! I was scheduled to come in for an eye exam and the doctor was not there. She was 1hour late. I was told the doctor was with another patient but there was no one walking in and out of those exam rooms.
Then, the issues started coming in. They had my date of birth wrong, despite me trying to correct by calling multiple times. The prescription was never finalized. I had to call the store and call & email a LOT of times to get a hold of the doctor (apparently the eye center group she is with is different from the store so had to work with them separately). Eventually the prescription was finalized but still had my DOB wrong. Horrid and unprofessional!
About billing: I have insurance but had to pay some money at time of visit, which is fine and typical. Few months later, I received a bill from the doctor office for another amount. Are you kidding me? You charge almost $400 (before insurance adjustment) on top of what I already paid at the store? What did I pay at the store for? No one help me answer this question because the doctor's billing office was unresponsive despite my multiple calls and voicemails.
Do not use their eye exam service!!!! Never again.
