Dr. Currier and his staff are very nice, kind people. The visits were always pleasant with the staff, however, my review is based on my experience.
Originally I thought I had optic neuritis. I came here for a second opinion. He concurred. After a few weeks, my vision started to get worse so I went back and he found a steroid-induced cataract. He suggested I try new contacts first and if that didn't work, then the PanOptix Trifocal lenses were the way to go and he gave me a brochure. I found out the trifocal lenses cost $2,500 out of pocket. I couldn't afford it immediately so i scheduled surgery a few months out so that I would have time to save and find financing.
In the meantime, a friend recommended that I see their Opthamologist. Since we originally thought it was optic neuritis, and now he discovered a cataract, I wanted to make sure that the cataract was the ONLY issue and we didn't miss anything.
I went for a second opinion in Traverse City and I am glad that I did. The opthamologist there confirmed I had a cataract but when I asked about the lens options he said that I am not even a candidate for the trifocal lenses due to me having MS and a demyelinating disease!!! He said that people with MS or similar diseases do not fare well with trifocal lenses when they have optic neuritis flares. Dr. Currier knew that I had MS, but didn't mention that an optic neuritis flare could make my vision more intolerable with trifocal lens than with monofocal. This would have impacted me for the rest of my life! I called Dr. Currier's office and cancelled my surgery and scheduled with the Traverse City office. The good news for me was that the monofocals are covered by insurance so this saved me $2,500 and I was able to schedule quickly.
The second reason that I am giving lower stars is that this office does not release your contact prescription unless you pay a $100 fitting fee out of pocket. I have been wearing contacts for 25 years and have NEVER had my prescription held hostage in exchange for a fee. Normally insurance charges a copay for a contact lens fitting. I paid my $40 to the office. This $100 was outside of that fee.
I only came here for contacts because I felt like my previous optometrist may have had me in the wrong script due to my blurry vision. (This was before we found out that I had a cataract). Once they diagnosed the cataract, I wanted surgery but they suggested the new contacts might help my vision enough to not need surgery yet. The lenses did nothing to help. My vision was still blurry. I ordered a month for one eye, but now I don't need them. The problem wasn't with my script, it was due to the cataract. I wasted $140 for something I didn't need, and almost spent $2,500 on a lens that would have made my vision worse with a flare up.
The people here are very nice, but this was a bad financial experience and a waste of time and I regret ever coming here. If I would have gone to Traverse City initially, I would have had the surgery months ago and not been waiting weeks for contacts to come in and then weeks to save money for a lens that I didn't need. Literally months of my life going by where I can't see and am struggling to drive and read. I was also putting off my steroid injections for my hip and back pain because I didn't want the steroids to make the cataract in my good eye get blurry before surgery (because then I would be completely blind). I've been living in pain while waiting for a cataract surgery that I could have had months ago at no cost! This negatively impacted my life for months based on the information that Dr. Currier's office provided me.
If you are financially struggling, I recommend that you go to a local optometrist for contacts. It will be cheaper. Places don't normally charge a fitting fee to get your script.
If you have a demyelinating disease like Multiple Sclerosis, read about the effects of trifocal lenses as opposed to monofocal before you jump into the PanOptix lens. It's not meant for everyone. We are not all created equal.
Dr. Currier made time to see my husband instead of leaving the office for the day. He's very caring, and knowledgeable. We feel very fortunate to have found him. THANK YOU DR. CURRIER!
I walked into Dr Currier's office this week with an eye issue. I hadn't been in his office since 1992 when we moved away. They updated my info and he saw me an hour later.
As he called me being there A blast from the past, he was as professional and personable as always. He took time and explained everything and hopefully on road to recovery. Scheduled a follow up visit soon. Thank you to the staff and Dr Currier for squeezing me in.
I had a very good experience in the doctor is very great at what he had done and explained it to me
I was referred to Dr. Currier for cataract removal and new lenses, he gave me several options and after a lot of research, I chose the premium lens for both eyes and I am absolutely happy that I did, I can see vivid colors and read everything, distant and close up. No more glasses needed
Thanks to Dr. Currier and his staff
So don't let your optometrist (that doesn't do cataract surgery) tell you that the premium lenses won't work for you; that you should go with the mono lens and return to him and he will fit you with glasses.
No one I trust more with myself or families vision. There is often a longer wait in his office on certain days, but that's because he takes more time with patients
or has an emergency squeezed in. I've been that a couple of times. Always chipper and happy. Is great at remembering things about patients. Plus if you end up in the ER with an eye issue, he is the one that they call 24/7/365. I've never meet a Dr more dedicated to his patients, staff, and practice. He needs to clone himself.
Dr Currier is not just an ophthalmologist but he's also a D.O. ( which is higher up & leans more towards natural healing/ plus he's a surgeon* ) - people are always amazed at the 35(?) professionally trained staff members at his office / this way his attention can remain 100% on the patient - it's a well known fact / no matter what day or time someone needs this Dr - he's there for them - he's always kind fun & positive-- he's saved many peoples lives -- there is a HUGE difference between optometrists & ophthalmologists ( most people aren't aware of this ) it's no wonder people fly into town for Dr Currier- he's like no other believe me / everyone says that too ( I love my new stylish glasses with modern points & colors ) Northern Eye is A PLUS
I lost my vision totally due to cataracts. He got me back to 20\30 with a pain free quick simple surgery and his staff habe been more than welcoming and comforting and encouraging.
