Sunita Yedavally, DO

Dr. Yedavally is an excellent physician! She takes her time and is thorough in her examinations to ensure a precise diagnoses. She explains everything clearly and makes sure you understand your options and treatment. She has been my retina specialist for almost 20 years and has seen me through a lot of eye issues and problems (spontaneous retinal detachment). It's due to her skill and professional advice that I can still see today!

I was referred to Dr. Yedavally on May 12, 2025, after my optometrist at Holt Eye Care suspected swelling of my optic nerves and possible IIH (Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension). At first, Dr. Yedavally was professional when she explained her findings, but once she finished, the tone of the appointment shifted. Instead of focusing on my symptoms -- migraines, pulsatile tinnitus, and vision issues -- she made comments about my weight, telling me: "No more McDonald's, no more soda, and let's be honest, you're kind of a big girl, you're kind of fat. It's getting nicer out so you can start going for more walks." She then told me she didn't think I needed an MRI, asking me: "So what do you want to do? I can order one, but I really don't think you need it. Are you sure?" As a patient, I found this incredibly unprofessional and dismissive. I am not a physician -- I came to her for guidance, not to be pressured into second-guessing my care. Her official note from that visit confirmed this approach, stating "no optic nerve edema or evidence for IIH" and giving instructions that boiled down to "blink more" and "weight loss with portion control." That was devastating to read because it minimized everything I was experiencing. I left the appointment in tears, questioning myself, and feeling unheard. The MRI she eventually ordered proved critical -- it showed papilledema and findings consistent with IIH. If I had deferred to her repeated suggestion that the MRI was unnecessary, my diagnosis might have been delayed, putting my vision at risk. I understand that weight can play a role in IIH, but the way this was handled was stigmatizing, unprofessional, and left me feeling dismissed during one of the scariest times in my health journey. Patients deserve compassion and careful listening, not shaming.

Dr. Yedavally is very professional and extremely knowledgeable, yet listened to a concern I had and has adapted the treatment to eliminate that concern. She's amazing!!
