Hiemstra Optical Co, Downtown Kalamazoo, MI

I have edited my original review, and lowered the rating from two stars to one. This company placed a hold on my insurance, which didn't let me go to another optometrist. That's right- that wouldn't take my insurance, and also wouldn't let me take it somewhere else. They also did not release the insurance when asked to; insurance had to be contacted directly. Original review below: I set up an appointment online, was told they would accept my insurance. 30 minutes before the appointment, I get a voicemail telling me they will no longer accept my insurance. I had already taken PTO, driven downtown, and paid for parking by this point. Pulling the rug this late feels scummy: they either a) don't know how insurance works, or b) were hoping to rip me off by making me pay out of pocket at the last second. I cannot comment on the quality of their doctors or frame selection. But the people running this office have demonstrated a poor understanding of insurance coverage, so ultimately I would not reccomend this optometrist.

I have been going to Hiemstra downtown for about 40 years. I love them! Jenny and Jen are so kind, helpful and courteous. Along with high professionalism. Highly recommend. We always talk and laugh.

I love them very helpful. The eye doctor was telling me stuff I didn't think he would know about my eye twitching and even when my Medicaid got cuff off Hiemstra was very helpful with helping me get new glasses, insurance issues and gave me my prescription with no hassle and tighten my frames even tho I didn't buy my glasses from them!

I moved here a few years ago and had to find a new optometrist. I love Hiemstra! The staff is so lovely and they were able to fix a wrong prescription that I was given in the past. They even gave me suggestions as to where to order my contacts so they'd be a little less $$

I've been going to Hiemstra for 20 years and their service is excellent. They go above and beyond. *I just had to add to this review* because just a few weeks after an awesome experience there, we had another stellar visit yesterday! Both times, I walked out completely blown away by their creative customer/patient service. Thank you Hiemstra! 6 stars for you!

Downtown Hiemstra has been my glasses connection for many years! Great staff who takes the extra time to make things right for you. Doesn't get better than that!

Talked in the phone said appointment was at 11:15 showed up told them it was 11:15 they told me to sit down and wait around 11:10 someone came in said they had a appointment at 11:15 so I went up and asked they told me my appointment was at 11:45 even though I talked with them on phone and confirmed in person it was at 11:15 had me waiting over a hour and 2 people I showed up before went ahead of me! Only have 1 doctor and 4 people working the desk what sense does that make? People are very friendly just a hassle to deal with
