Portage Ophthalmology

I have gone to Dr. Abdulhak of this office for the past two years for my annual diabetic eye exam. The first year, he told me my Glasses prescription had not changed and that I had a tiny start of cataracts. The second year, which was December 2025, I told him that my vision had been very blurry for the past few months and that I could not see very well. I felt that I would probably need a new prescription for my glasses. I had told him this AFTER the exam in response to him telling me that my eyeglass prescription had not changed and my eyes were fine. He immediately said well, then I think it's time for us to remove those cataracts. He then went into a sales pitch, telling me that I would be having laser surgery and that insurance would only cover part of it. He said that I would have to pay a few thousand dollars out-of-pocket for each eye. When I went to the front desk to make the surgery appointment I was told that the clinic does not accept my insurance for surgery, only for the eye exams. I was then referred by my family physician to U Of M's Kellogg eye Center. I had that appointment today. Not only do I not require cataracts surgery, but I have dry eye, which is causing my symptoms. . My current eyeglass prescription is way off and also does not have enough correction for the astigmatism that I have in both my left and right eye. So, had Portage Opthalmology accepted my insurance, I would've had needless cataract surgery and paid thousands out of pocket (he never told me about the other option, regular surgery, which insurance does cover). And I would not know about the dry eye. I would not recommend this Doctor or this practice to anybody. And I highly suggest that if they tell you you need some kind of surgery, get a second opinion!

Dr. Abdulhak is great. Kind and professional. Nice office. My husband had 1st cataract surgery by Dr. A and the procedure went well.

I was referred to see this ophthalmologist from my primary doctor for the pain in my right eye and temporal region on the right side. I was told if it got worst or continued, go to the ER to which I did end up having to go. The ER did a visual and I wasn't able to make out the letters on line 4. They did a CT scan and it did show that I has some fluid build up in my sinuses. I was to keep the appointment with the ophthalmologist, when I got there, I waited a half hour before called back, the assistant did do a visual and I couldn't make out some letters on line 4. Waited another almost hour for the Dr to come in, he wasn't in the room 5 minutes and had 2 calls come in on his cell phone and left the room. He checked for pressure, also dilated my eyes for pictures to be taken, once he examined the pictures he said everything is fine. I wasn't very pleased with the visit, while waiting for the Dr I looked around the room, some of the equipments were very dusty. I wouldn't recommend this Dr to anyone, I felt like 2nd class citizen.

They were very accommodating at getting me in last minute. Very nice doctor and he made me feel better and less worried.

I drove my grandma 2 hours to her appointment that she had scheduled for 6 months and when we got there before she even went inside a lady walking out of the building mentioned to us that they canceled her appointment and didn't bothering calling her. My grandma then proceeded to go inside and was told they no longer take her insurance so she had to cancel her appointment and when she asked the front desk why they didn't call her they said that sometimes these things fall through the cracks. How is it possible that these things fall through the cracks so often that 2 people right after the other have appointments canceled?

I went to Dr. Abdulhak this morning for a chalazion removal and he made me feel very at ease along with his assistant Bethany.

My wife has been a patient of Doctor Abdulhak for over two years. He diagnosed and treated her diabetes related vision problems which undoubtedly saved her eyesight. He also recently performed cataract surgery on both of her eyes which has resulted in her having much better vision. He is caring, diligent, very knowledgeable, and skilled. The entire staff has always been kind and professional.
