I rate this particular location in journal Square 2stars just to be nice since the optometrist/optomologist does conduct very comprehensive exams. However the waiting area smells horrible like something died. They false advertise all designer frames as 50% off but charge you more than half that out of pocket. I paid $300 for Coach designer frames that should have been $259.50 based on the 50% displayed advertisements which they took downand or possibly adjusted after my complaint. $445 total for coach frames, prescription lenses etc that didn't even come in it's original case. When I asked why I was paying more than advertised the receptionist admitted the sign is falsely advertised but offered no resolution as far as compensation for the overpayment. The wait is supposed to be by appointment but it appears walkins are seen faster than appointments. This place looses major points for customer service and professionalism as the receptionist kust hangout chatting at the desk and always says they will call you back when you call in but never do. I will go to their Newport center location going forward.

I've been to multiple Cohen's Fashion Optical locations in Queens and Manhattan and never had an issue. My insurance has always covered 100% of the eye exam, plus part of the frames and lenses--just like it does at many other optical places that offer exams free with insurance.
This Jersey City location, however, felt shady from the start.
They confirmed they take my insurance, had me fill out all the paperwork, and told me my insurance would cover the eye exam. Even though I knew my insurance also covers frames and lenses, I agreed to proceed.
Then, right before the exam, the receptionist suddenly says:
"Oh sorry, just to let you know, your insurance only covers 70% and you'll have to pay the rest out of pocket."
Funny how that detail only comes out after all the paperwork is done and I'm already sitting there ready for the exam.
That's not a mistake -- that's bad faith.
I canceled immediately because the whole thing smelled like a classic bait-and-switch. If they're willing to change the story at the last second for an eye exam, I can only imagine how hard they'd try to nickel-and-dime you on frames and lenses.
Avoid this location. If you value honesty, transparency, or not being "milked" for money your insurance already covers, go to literally any other Cohen's -- or better yet, anywhere else entirely.
You've been warned.
I'll start by saying the staff who conduct the eye exams are excellent professional, patient, and personable. Unfortunately, my experience with the front end staff was enough to ensure I won't be returning after my first visit.
I was advised by two different staff members to purchase glasses costing $500 for a 7-year old child. There was no acknowledgment of the reality that children break glasses, and recommending such an impractical price point made it clear the focus was on upselling rather than the child's actual needs.
The younger female staff at this location absolutely need a refresher course on in customer service 101. After spending well over $700 on an exam and contacts , they don't even seem to have slightest clue in how to properly treat or send off customer. When I went to pick up my contacts, they basically gave my boxes contacts and expected to walk out the door with them. I had to ask them for a bag, which she did in a very indifferent no eye contact, no smile. And there was no thank you either. I think would it be good if they were introduced to the basics of traditional American style customer service
Will be reporting so a full audit can be done, they are absolutely committing some kind of insurance fraud.
I was quoted $190 for a 3 month supply of contacts. I stated that I have $200 allowance from my insurance that would cover the cost, One of then sales associates claimed that the $200 allowance only applied to a year supply which was ABSOLUTELY FALSE, claiming "that's how they bill".
After a short back and forth and a call to my insurance company. I did in fact have a general allowance of $200. They then up-charged the quote and said the new total would be $390.
They would not give me an itemized receipt of what my insurance was actually covering.
They have college/ High school level trainees completed parts of the exam
ABSOLUTELY WOULD NOT RECOMMEND COMING TO THIS LOCATION. And will be reporting them immediately.
Three weeks after being sold a display model.
And then expected to pay $100 for a replacement frame (because I did not buy insurance!)... but what is the warranty on three week old glasses?
This is not only a retail space but FIRST a medical facility. We are not customers. We are your patients.
The culture here needs to change.
Going back today to WAIT for my "FREE" replacement frames. They need the lenses from the broken frames to pop them into the new ones.
Praise God!
NEVER AGAIN!
Do not go. Putting in wrong prescription in glasses. Complained I was blurry and having headaches and they Said "you need to get used to them" Went to a different doctor and they said the lenses strength didn't match my prescription. They should be investigated how much harm they are doing to ppl.
Manger is commitmenting insurance frauds an audit needs to be done. I came in good faith for my annual check up. Sells person tried upsell me, informing me that it would be 379 to keep my existing frames and change my lens. When I came to pick up the news one, i was than demise. Staff informed me that mangerment would reach out to me. I came in today he told me i was unwelcoming in his establishment, all because i pointed out his hash tactics that go against the ADA act. #metoo
