Joseph Shovlin, M.D.

Upon my initial visit to Dr. Shovlin as a patient. I was greeted and promptly taken for an eye examination. The technician's exceptional expertise was evident as she meticulously explained each step of the procedure. Subsequently, Dr. Shovlin provided me with a comprehensive diagnosis and outlined the necessary treatment options.

Dr. Shovlin is fantastic! He did my cataract surgery in Jan. 2023. All went smoothly and I just need 1.5 reading glasses and wear glasses for nighttime driving. Before that, my cataracts were so bad that I was not able to drive at night, esp. if it was raining. Also, I have been very nearsighted my whole life and could never see the morning without glasses or contacts but as of 2 years ago, that is a thing of the past! The surgery was a game changer. I did see him on Thurs. Jan. 29 (2026) in Monroe about what I thought was demodex belpharitis which he gave me an ointment for. And was able to schedule a follow-up with him. I had a 10:45 am appt and didn't see him until like 12:30 pm though. The staff who checked me in and out were nice. While Dr. Shovlin is excellent, this office needs significant work. I had to complete pre-check in paperwork online, upload front and back photos if my insurance card, and pay my co-pay, which I did. But I was not charged the right co-pay so had to pay more when there, and provide my instance again. Then sign more forms (different ones?) and complete a ridiculously long 2 page medical history form. Please have patients either do everything all online before hand or at the office b/c doing both saves no one time. I had just been there in 2023 for cataract surgery and see an optometrist in Princeton (Dr. Ritterbusch, was there in April '25) and they did my cataract surgery yet I had to supply all of that information?! This office seems overstaffed with a lot of women who have nothing to do but stand around and gossip and complain. I heard it all during my long wait- seems someone was in the office for an hour about family leave and was waiting to speak to someone else who was in yet another "useless" meeting. And there were discussions about why this person even bothered to come in and that it wasn't fair to others. It also seemed like someone on the staff made an error, and a patient had a contact in their eye and the staffer wasn't aware of it. I found the whole thing tiresome and really unprofessional. Save these petty conversations for private spaces and not in front of a patient exam room!

Dr Shovlin closed a basil cell removal on my eyelid just below the lashes. Very little pain, inflammation less than expected. It looks like the wound will close with minimum scarring. Dr. Shovlin was communicative during the surgery and explained what he was doing as things progressed. I have confidence in him and the process.

Dr. Shovlin is truly an exceptional doctor. I am deeply grateful that he returned to the clinic after hours to help me with an urgent procedure when I was in great pain. His professionalism, kindness, and dedication went far beyond my expectations. He treats his patients with genuine care and compassion. I will always remember his help and highly recommend him to anyone in need of an outstanding doctor.

Dr. Shovlin made me feel very confident in his medical competency, as well as very comfortable. He has a very pleasant, friendly demeanor and his exam was very thorough. I highly recommend him.

Exceptionally good and rallies everything. Doesn't feel like rushing and he even asked if I have a question which I feel is not many asks these days. Always explains things and very patient doctor!

I was very impress with Dr. Shovlin's mannerism and professionalism. I would definitely recommend him.

As always, I am very pleased every time I have an appointment with Dr. Shovlin. I am treated with respect and never have any negative experience.
