Dr. Downes removed pterygiums in both eyes as well as cataract removal and lens replacement in both eyes. I have been very pleased with all four of these procedures. Dr. Downes explained everything thoroughly, answered all of my questions and always asked if I had additional questions. He is very professional, skilled and friendly. I would recommend him highly, as well as the staff at Southwest Eyecare.

I had my cataract surgery in both eyes with IOL implants during January-March this year at a different group/location. The surgery itself went well, but very soon night vision developed serious issues with starbursts and bright light arcs, making night driving dangerous. Since I didn't get any scientific explanation as to the root cause, I approached Dr. Downes' office for a second opinion. I am so grateful to Dr. Downes for readily agreeing to see me, that too with a short notice. After looking at my eyes, he asked his Tech to do a full topographical scan of the cornea. It then became so clear to me on the root cause of the issue. He referred me to an Optometrist for custom-fitted Scleral contacts. It's so refreshing to come across a Physician who goes to the extra mile to see the issue beyond a "successful" surgery?

Dr. Downes, a native of New Mexico, graduated from Tulane University with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He obtained his medical degree at the University Of New Mexico School Of Medicine. Dr. Downes completed his residency in Ophthalmology at California Pacific Medical Center, and during this time, he traveled to the world-renowned Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai, India to complete specialized surgical training. After residency, he spent a year working as a Comprehensive Ophthalmologist at Kaiser Permanente, and completed a subspecialty Fellowship in Cornea and External Disease at the world-renowned Oregon Health Sciences University Casey Eye Institute. Dr. Downes is board certified in Ophthalmology.
