Oculus 20/20

I went to this practice a few times out of convenience - her office was around the corner from my house - each time was a bad experience. I found Dr. Poran to be quite cagey. She had a really hard time getting the correct prescription for me and was visibly annoyed at me when I told her the setting was worse than before. So much so I found myself apologizing! She rushed me out with the wrong prescription. On another visit she scanned my eyes and I raised an issue I remembered a previous doctor had flagged. When I told her about it her response was that she had also observed it. What struck me was if I didn't bring it up, she wouldn't have either. Lastly, she never had saved my files, so every time I came in she had no record of me.

My husband and I have different eye issues. First, Dr. Poran saved me from a horrific case of conjunctivitis. Second, throughout Covid, once she re-opened, she and her husband maintained a safe atmosphere for all clients to enter her office safely. Third, she is a lovely, kind and caring doctor who has helped to maintain our Brooklyn neighborhood and keep it rock n' rolling. We need people like her in Carroll Gardens/cobble hill. 5 stars!

I've been going here for at least 10 years and am very happy. Dr. Poran diagnosed an eye condition that all my earlier doctors had missed. I was fitted with the correct lenses and it helped so much. Very accommodating and friendly too.

Dr. Amy Poran and her staff are extremely professional and affable. She's been my optometrist for the past two years and I'm not switching to anyone else! Her exams are thorough and carefully explains every procedure. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Dr Amy Poran and Tamara at Oculus 20/20 are the best. I am so impressed with Dr Poran and her dedication to spending the time to evaluate correctly and I appreciate finally finding someone who really cares! As a photographer my eyes are my livelihood and I wouldn't trust anyone else to continue to examine me and evaluate my prescription. I went to her this past year for a second opinion since I wasn't happy with my first set of contacts at another place and the service and evaluation exceeded my expectations, and I left seeing so much clearer and with the added suggestion and many free trials of an expensive type of contact that works for my dry eye issue, that are worth every penny, am very grateful for the support and true professionalism at Oculus 20/20. Dont hesitate, in fact if you care about proper evaluation and service - this is where you need to go.

She takes phone calls of other patients in the middle of consultations. Poor beside manners and questionable practices. I gave her a couple of chances but she was overall just not pleasant and I find it troubling that she answers phone calls during a visit. Do not recommend and will not be going back.

I purchased prescription lenses for frames that I had already purchased because the selection is very limited and over priced. My prescription lenses were completed in a longer time than was originally quoted which was not great because I had lost my old glasses and it was a struggle to see and read. It was August and I did not blame the Oculus/Dr Poran for this inconvenience. Within a few weeks of receiving my prescription lenses there was a heavy fog on the center of both lenses. I took them back to Dr. Amy Poran who said they were defective and needed to be replaced by the lab they were made at. Because I had lived through August without being about to see and read properly, I tried to find a way that would make this inconvenience more tolerable. I took in old prescription sunglasses and asked if the the tint could be taken out in order for me to use while the defective lenses were replaced. At the time I thought that Dr Poran agreed this was the less painful resolution. I was never informed of an additional charge for the tint to be taken out, I thought is might be done in house or certainly by the same factory that created this problem for me. I took in my prescription sunglasses that I normally use for driving to have the tint removed. When leaving them off, I was not informed of an additional charge for this, I thought the service provided I would be done in house or at the same lab without additional costs to me due to this huge inconvenience, after all, Oculus 20/20 was the retailer and made a profit from my purchase. When my sunglasses were returned with very little of the tint removed, I was told there was a charge for the services that Dr Poran provided. When I explained that on principle I felt it not appropriate since I was being inconvenience due to defective lenses that needed to be replaced, I was told that Dr Poran is only the "middle man" and she should not have to incure the fee due to the lab making inferior lenses. Dr Poran blamed it on my insurance company and took no responsibility for having sold the lenses to me for a profit. I tried to discuss the matter simply on principle, it was a $20+ fee. I was told by Dr Poran that she should not work for free and she "has a family". I agree, no one should work for free, however when you have a business there are certain costs to doing business. I too have a family and while Dr Poran may consider herself the "middle man" her store/practice is who I paid at my over $600 only for lenses in addition to what my insurance pays. What I have an issue with is Oculus sold me lenses that turned out to be defective and yet Dr Poran will not take accountability. The customer should not be penalized or told that she is only the "middle man". As the customer, with my own family and who I currently cannot read to my young child before bed, I am very disappointment in the customer service provided at Oculus and Dr Amy Poran. I am the one who is now paying additional costs and being extremely inconvenienced due to this problem. It was not a great situation, but the lack of accountability from Dr. Poran made it worse. I am very disappointed. I don't recommend Oculus on Smith Street. Find a reputable place that will stand behind the product they sell.

What a great place to shop for glasses, and care for your eyes. The doctor and sales advisor were professional and knowledgeable and pleasant and helpful.
