I stopped into Sunny Eye Shop without an appointment yesterday 2/17, and from the moment I walked in, the space felt welcoming. The shop was busy, with three staff members working, but I was acknowledged right away.
I explained why I had stopped by, and to my surprise, Dr. Shoaib herself was right there on the floor and introduced herself--so down-to-earth and approachable. I was then assisted by Zuleika (and yes, her hair is amazing!). She listened carefully as I explained my situation and showed me around the shop. I also brought a pair of frames that I hadn't purchased there and asked if they could be adjusted or reused.
Zuleika was honest and very clear. She explained that because the frames were older and not from their shop, she didn't feel comfortable guaranteeing any adjustments since they could break. She must have asked me about five times to make sure I understood the risk. I truly respected that--most places don't take the time to protect both the customer and themselves that way. After thinking about it, I went ahead and told her I took full responsibility.
My exam went smoothly, the service was outstanding, and the entire team made me feel taken care of from start to finish. It seemed to be an all-female team yesterday--maybe even a female-owned business--which I truly admire and support.
I highly recommend Sunny Eye Shop. I can't wait to pick up my new specs. Thank you for seeing me without an appointment and making this such a great experience!
This is a retrospective review and my conclusion is that this shop is overpriced and the optometrist is bad at the job or not professional enough to match other places. The hipster-ish store interior and nonchalant staff had me suspect that they care more about look than substance. And it turned out to be true in retrospect.
I went here in 2024 to do yearly check and contacts prescription. They charged me $270 with insurance, as they coerced me into an unnecessary more detailed examination. I should have known better.
In addition, they changed my contacts from biofinity to biofinity energys and prescribed alcon daily lenses. Biofinity energys was claimed to be the upgraded version, but I started experiencing discomfort such as hazy vision and halos since last summer. The discomfort is gone once I take them off or switch to other lenses. This is the change they talked me into, which I assume is driven by commission fee since at the time Biofinity energys were still new to the market. Of course, I also blame Biofinity for their capitalist trick of inventing useless or even harmful new features.
Regarding Alcon daily lenses, I was told by the current optometrist that they are not fitting well with my eye shape as the OD is 9.0. Once I changed to other brands, I finally knew how comfortable daily lenses are supposed to feel.
Very casually snapped the hinge off a pair of glasses that I brought in to have assessed for adjustment.
Then, very glibly, told me to "go find a jewelry shop" to fix the glasses that they had, very casually, just broken.
Past experiences had been positive but this was shockingly poor behavior. Irresponsible, indifferent and casually insulting.
The Dr is friendly and nice. However, she has not followed up when she offered for referral to specialist as I have been suffering from dry eyes with other associated symptoms...
Have been going here for a few years and love it! Everyone is super friendly. Dr Shoaib is super helpful and every visit is easy and straightforward.
Personalized care and exceptional service, even during the current COVID 19 pandemic. Dr. Shoaib answered all my questions and helped me understand what I needed to do for my visual health. Recognized me through the door even though I was only there once before. Cute and organized shop with competitive prices. Accepted my Davis Vision plan and ended up getting a pair of glasses with a sweet gold accent. All in all, would recommend to friends and family in the Greenpoint area.
I regret getting my glasses made at this eye shop. There are three main reasons why I'm leaving this low review:
1. A critical error by the eye doctor
I had my eye exam here in early May and ordered new glasses. When I first received them, I noticed that the left lens didn't match my vision and caused severe dizziness. I mentioned this to a staff member, but he simply told me it was normal at first and to wear them for about a week.
As someone who has worn glasses for 30 years, I knew this was not just an adjustment issue, but since it was my first time at this shop, I tried to follow their opinion. Even after wearing the glasses for three days, the dizziness persisted, so I brought in a pair I had made in January at another clinic and asked them to compare the prescriptions. That's when they realized their own prescription had been incorrect.
Despite this serious mistake, no one offered a sincere apology. They only said they would check with the doctor again. A few days later, another eye doctor dismissed the issue lightly and didn't take responsibility. To be exact, my left eye has a prescription of -0.50, but they had prescribed +0.50. If I hadn't asked for a recheck, I would have continued wearing the wrong lenses.
2. Lack of proper management, delays, and broken trust
I understand that anyone can make a mistake, and since they agreed to replace the lenses, I was willing to move on. However, the issue got worse. I returned the glasses on a Tuesday and was told I could pick them up by that Friday at the latest. A week later, I still hadn't heard anything.
When I called to check in, they seemed surprised and acted as if they had forgotten about my glasses. They said they'd call me back after checking. A male staff later called and explained that due to Memorial Day, the lens shipping was delayed, which is why they couldn't proceed. He apologized sincerely, and I appreciated the explanation and told him I was willing to wait.
But just an hour later, around 4 PM, a different female called to say the glasses were ready for pickup. This inconsistency made me realize that the staff either don't communicate properly or had lied to me earlier.
3. Limited inventory
I initially liked the cozy and friendly atmosphere of the shop. They carried some brands I liked, so I assumed I could find a good pair despite the small size of the store. However, after my eye exam, I found most of the glasses in drawers were outdated styles, and I had to choose from the display items.
I specifically asked for a new frame rather than a display model, and the staff agreed. But when I came to pick up the glasses, it turned out they had used the display pair anyway. At this point, I lost trust in this eye shop completely.
Will never go anywhere else! Their knowledge is one thing but the energy and attitude is next level. You will be taken care of above and beyond. The time they took to answer ALL my questions was so thorough I left feeling taken care of for life. Dr Sunny, Isabel and Brenna took such great care of me.
