SUNY Downstate Eye Center

I have been here two times to have small embedded particles of metal removed from my eye. Both doctors were personable/professional. On both cases I eventually healed perfectly. They were willing to see me in this 'semi emergency' condition without an appointment the next day (they are not open 24hr contrary to the information above). I arrived before they opened and waited until the late afternoon to be seen. I did this to avoid the high cost of an ER visit. On my second visit the reception staff were adamant that I required a referral from my insurance or they would not see me. As calmly as I could with a piece of metal in my eye I explained that I believed they were wrong because I did not require one the previous visit for the same thing. They required me to call my insurance asking for a referral, my insurance told me I didn't need one, anything else? No? Click. Now what to do? Eventually I called insurance again and put them on the phone with reception who, clearly annoyed at being proven wrong, made an appointment. After the visit was over I asked to pay, "We don't take money from patients, we bill your insurance". I explained that I have a high deductible plan and will be paying for the full cost myself. "The bill is not ready". I ask about the bill from the previous time which they look up, I ask to pay with a credit card, "our credit card machine is down". The 'payment portal' found on the bill which was mailed to me to pay online did not work both times. If you move/travel a lot and receive mail somewhere other than where you live you may have a hard time paying your bill remotely. I'm not positive that all my bills are even taken care of as no paperwork was given to me post-appointment except for the offices business card.

Dr. Scott is great. But they overbook appointment slots for him all the time. So be ready to wait for 3hrs. This is so unprofessional I waited 3hrs and I am so frustrated.

Dr Bradley Phillips was excellent. He was professional, extremely skillful and thorough. His bedside manners are impeccable. While explaining his diagnosis and his treatments, he was very patient and made sure we understood exactly what was happening. His staff was kind, thoughtful and hard working. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and we miss the center. We hope that SUNY will bring back the eye center. It was one of the best places for eye care in brooklyn.

I love my doctor here (Dr. Dersu), She's so professional & caring. But the wait is too long to see your doctor. And if you're calling to make &/or reschedule an appointment, you're out of luck, because you will wait for thirty minutes to an hour to get someone on the phone. It's just horrible. Someone needs to do something about this!!!

Do not come here if you have a deductible. Dr. Shinder was kind, quick, great patient relations. My experience was not bad. However I received 2 bills for my 40min appointment. One from University Physicians of Brooklyn Ophthalmologist, one from University Hospital of Brooklyn. They include some of the same itemization aka charging me twice. After calling both places, I was finally informed one was for the doctors time, and one was from the hospital because he rents space there. Also that my double billing was NOT being billed twice, it was for administering the test on one bill and use of the equipment on the other. This is absurd and I had no idea when i booked i would be recieving two bills, or that that would total so much - more than any private doctor has ever charged me. I was not prepared nor am i able to pay this much. I was also told that nobody has continued to be upset after having the bills explained, and essentially that "this is how theyve always done it" which is never a good excuse. I was told to appeal via my insurance and that it is not the offices responsibility to inform me how I will be billed, its my job to check with my insurance on how it will cost. This is impossible, as insurance can never give you a specific number, and would not know to check for a second bill under a different entitys name. This system takes advantage and amounts to theft, and they are shocked you would question it. Save your money.

The experience is not good because sitting waiting for the doctor Phillips, over two half hours no respect for patients time. While the tests take about twenty minutes all patients is doing is waiting on the doctor to enter the building. Doctor we not bashing you, we want you to respect others people time, please the staff doing there job. Let the community of Flatbush see some change doctor Phillips please and thank you.

The phone rings forever, and on one answers. Or the automated voice comes one, and still no answer. I was once on hold for over 1/2 of an hour. I could not reschedule an appointment because of this. The only reason I am still there, is because I have confidence in my doctor. Horrible!!

The staff in this office are unprofessional and if you should make an appointment with them, be prepared to spend the entire time in the waiting room. I called on a Tuesday in severe pain to see Dr. Scott, the receptionist checked my insurance and stated she will ask Dr. Scott if I would see me that day. When she returned my phone call she stated he has not seen me since 2016, therefore I should come in on Thursday. Keep in mind, Dr. Scott was not concerned that I was in severe pain. I made an appointment for my daughter as well, she was very reluctant to go because she complained when she visited there before, she waited for hours. I thought it would be different. To get to my point, once we arrived on Thursday, we were waiting an hour when the receptionist announced I would not be seen because it showed I had a second insurance. This was not acceptable I requested to have a word with Dr. Scott. Dr. Scott was worst than the secretary, he listened for a short while and then he said what did I want him to do. As I began to explain my dilemma he began rolling his eyes, and he mentioned he had 90 patients to see. I stated you are overbooked It was clear he was not concerned with assisting me or correcting the staff for their unprofessionalism. When I mentioned to him his reaction (rolling his eyes) he proceeded to open the door to escort me out, he was rude. I then walked out. Take my advice, stay away from this office, especially Dr. Scott.
