Dr. McDaniel is the best of the best! She is the family doctor for both me and my children and is always so kind, warm, thorough and quick to make an appointment with. The rest of the staff is super helpful. We trust Family Vision Asheville for all of our eye care needs and won't be going anywhere else. I highly recommend!
Since moving to Asheville five years ago, I've had my vision checked and purchased new glasses three times at Family Vision Asheville. Every visit has been a great experience--professional, friendly, and welcoming from start to finish. The entire staff is wonderful, the selection of eyeglasses is excellent, and the quality of care is consistently top-notch. I highly recommend them.
This place is by far the best place to go for eye care. Dr. McDaniel is so caring and knowledgeable and really takes the time to explain everything and make sure all your questions are answered. All of the staff are so welcoming and patient and really make me feel valued as a person instead of just "another appointment." If you want quality care and a welcoming environment, I highly recommend FVA.
I walked out of Family Vision Asheville today unhappy for the third time. I suggest avoiding this business. (Short version: fails on the basic task of giving an accurate eye exam, fails on ordering the right lenses, hard fail on customer service, and will be pushy about sales.)
Here's what happened:
I came in with a prescription from an opthalmologist in 2024 and I wanted new frames. Family Vision Asheville has a limited selection and I did not love their frames but I caved to the sales pressure, ordered new glasses which were fine but I then I lost them. I went back to Family Vision Asheville again, got a new eye exam and was told my vision had significantly changed (not true). I tried to pick another pair of frames. Again, Family Vision Asheville tried hard to sell me frames (read: was pushy). This time I didn't cave and told them I'd find frames online. The salesperson acted uppity (read: she wanted her frames commission.)
I bring in frames and ask them to order lenses and the estimated cost of the new lenses is way more than the previous year. I ask why and am told, "Well, lenses just cost more now." I say, "What specifically is costing more?" She tells me it's because the lenses are Eyezen. I say I didn't ask for Eyezen, I wanted the same lenses I had before at the same price and ask her to look that up. Low and behold, they cost *exactly the same.* I order those.
I pick up my new glasses and they are very yellow tinted. I bring them back in and sit with a different salesperson who acts like I am wrong until she sees the lens over white paper and realizes they are very yellow. They reorder the lenses. I come back in to pick up the second pair of new lenses and ask why the first pair was so yellow? I'm told, it's your + prescription. You asked for blue-light filter so your lenses are going to be yellow so I reordered them without that filter. Now that explanation, frankly makes no sense to me. But even if my prescription requires yellow lens, shouldn't you tell a person that and ask if that is ok? I leave with the new glasses again but then notice I cannot see small print with these glasses. And I cannot wear them at night because they distort light. The prescription is clearly not right.
I make another appointment, which will be my SIXTH trip to Family Vision Asheville for a single pair of glasses. Dr. McDaniel immediately tells me it will be quick, the problem is I need Eyezen lenses. I am confused how she knows what the problem is since she hasn't even asked me what problem I am having? I explain to her, no, I have already said no to Eyezen lenses because I had glasses that were single vision that I was very happy with but I lost them. The problem is the newest lenses are clearly the wrong prescription. We do another eye exam. She finds that my prescription in my last pair of glasses, which I was happy with but lost, was correct. I possibly need minor magnification in one eye, which she says is optional but I could gain if I ordered Eyezen lenses. She also explains that my vision has not significantly changed but she thought it did because prescription from ophthalmologists are written differently than optometrists? And that the conversion must have been made incorrectly in the last pair of lenses? She gives me a prescription that is nearly identical to the prescription I brought in with me in March 2024 from the opthalmologist but different than the one she gave me in Sept. 2025. (Read: Family Vision Asheville did NOT give me the right prescription.)
I probably should've left right then but..I tried to pick out lenses again, which was also a disaster because guess what the Eyezen lenses they tried so hard to sell me also have a yellow tint! I finally gave up, asked for a refund and left. Did I mention I went there SIX times in two months and left without glasses?!
FVA is amazing! The staff and doctors are incredibly helpful and excellent at what they do. I feel super lucky to have found them for the eye issues I was having, my new frames, exam and contacts. Hands down the best eye doctor I've ever had. Thank you guys so much!
Family Vision was awful to work with. When I had an apt and was running less than 5 minutes behind I called as a courtesy to let them know.
I walked in 3 minutes late and they had given my apt away and told me I had like an hour wait if i wanted to be seen. True story.
Now for the past 2 years they call me and leave me voicemails. I've spoken to them a few separate occasions to remove me from the last but they refuse.
This business sucks.
I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Laura McDaniel and staff! I had an appt for my 8-year old son and the team was very kind and patient, as he asked many questions. I too, had a great experience, as I needed to bite the bullet for my first pair of progressive glasses!
During the process, the staff was very kind, helpful and transparent on their cost, fees and what my insurance covered. Thank you Dr. McDaniel for helping us to see clearly now!
Dr. Alviola Haley is absolutely communicative. She asked questions and ensured she got my eye measurements extremely accurate. My progressive (bifocal) glasses came in 2 weeks later. They said give your eyes a couple weeks to adjust but it took me 15 minutes tops. I can see tack sharp again! Hands down the best eye doctor I've ever been to.
