I visited Dr. Cline on January 27, 2025, and unfortunately, my experience was quite disappointing--so much so that I will not be returning for future visits.
This was my second appointment. During my first visit in November, I was examined for astigmatism as I needed glasses to drive comfortably at night. I had some trouble with watering eyes during the exam, and I was reassured by one of the assistants that this wouldn't affect the results. However, it felt counterintuitive since my vision was clearly blurred by tears. Dr. Cline confirmed that I have astigmatism and assured me that glasses would resolve my issues.
When my new glasses arrived earlier this month, I found they felt off. After experiencing significant nausea and headaches, I took them back to the clinic, where the optometrist confirmed the prescription was correct but made some adjustments. I finally felt comfortable enough to drive but soon realized my astigmatism was still not being adequately corrected, as I continued to see halos and starburst patterns around lights.
I returned to the clinic seeking clarity on why my glasses weren't working. I was initially examined by what seemed to be an assistant who did not dilate my eyes or perform sufficient tests. It was then Dr. Cline entered the room. While she confirmed the glasses matched the prescription, she seemed baffled that my astigmatism continued to be an issue. Instead of focusing on my concerns, she blamed the glasses for lacking the "curvature" they should have, despite prior confirmations to the contrary. She even suggested that I may be "wired differently" or sensitive to lights.
When I expressed my frustration that the glasses were not alleviating my astigmatism as promised, my questions were met with condescension. I felt talked down to, and my concerns invalidated, which is not what I expect from a healthcare provider.
Ultimately, before Dr. Cline departed, she recommended that I return for a dilated refraction. However, her tone was somewhat dismissive, as she stated that she typically performs these procedures on children and implied that they aren't necessary for patients in their late 30s or older. When I expressed my willingness to follow her recommendation, she mockingly warned me that the procedure would make my eyes "blurry." I found this interaction to be unprofessional and it influenced my lack of comfort and trust in her care. This experience falls short of what one should expect from a caring and attentive physician. I advise anyone who values a doctor who listens and engages meaningfully with patients to look elsewhere.
9/23/25 Edit: I visited a new clinic today who were extremely patient with me and gave me a new prescription that seems much more fitting. I included pictures to show the difference.

I went to two appointments with Dr. Cline. The first appointment was a dilation appointment and the second appointment, she wanted to see what I could see with my eyes not dilated.
The first appointment, I had some concerns about my eye health. She didn't believe I was having any issues at all with my eyes except that they were farsighted- which is what was causing the blurriness. But you cannot ask this woman a question without her making you feel like you're stupid for asking the question. She has a very condescending tone. "The only reason your eyesight is blurry is because you're farsighted, not because you have problems with your eyes." "What makes you think that?"
The second appointment, I was clearly having trouble seeing the letters. They were very blurry. She tells me that "you need to stop straining" in a very abrasive tone. As if it's my fault that I can't see. Exactly what do you want me to do here? I'm doing what you ask. I'm also here to get help from you. Then she says "I know you're straining because you could read the last two lines and now you can't." Okay? If I could see, I would tell you what the letters were. Do you think I want to be there any longer with a woman berating me?
Dr. Cline is very abrasive, condescending, and arrogant. I will not be making another appointment. Even her mannerisms and hand motions scream how aggravated she is with patients.
My year 10 old son was with me for the second appointment. He picked up on her behavior. He even said how rude she was to me and he obviously didn't like how she treated me.
Also, I'd like to note that a staff member told me there were a lot of new employees needing trained. She stated that no one wants to work. I wonder why. If that woman is anything like she is to her patients, to her own staff, I wouldn't want to work there either.
As a single mother on fixed income I tried to call to schedule my infant an appointment that she desperately needs and was told I have to pay a deposit of $25 which I don't have in order to be seen. Is a person who receives Medicaid my co-pays never been more than $4 anywhere and I found that outrageous the staff didn't seem to care and didn't want to help with the solution I don't advise you or any of your family to go there
I wanted to take the time and show my appreciation for the amazing and friendly staff at this establishment. I've recently had to take my 6 year old to get an exam and get her set up to get glasses and anyone that had kids knows that there not the easiest to work with at such a young age . Not only did they have incredible patience with my daughter but they also took the time to make her feel extremely comfortable and confident in her exam.
Honestly I'm so grateful to have chosen the Shelby eye clinic because they made this such an easy and exciting experience for my daughter that she will carry with her in life . I highly recommend this establishment and want to give the staff a special thank you for being so patient and kind from making my appointment to picking out her glasses. Thank you so much and keep up the amazing work
I got a call the other day from this eye center. The woman I was talking to was confused about where the referral came from.Didn't know the doctor's name. Gave me two names of Dr's I don't even have. Then said I have to have a diabetic eye exam.. I said I don't have diabetes!! Mind you I go to Morgantown Eye Center In Shelby. So I had no idea what was going on. Come to find out after awhile on the phone, She was talking to the wrong person. But continued to tell me before making the appointment she needed 25.00 copay.. No money no appointment!!! What???!! No clue how to talk to people and wanted a copay before even seeing a patient.. I would never recommend this place.Go to Morganton eye center!!
I may be given cause to change my score at a later time. But for the moment I rate them a 5 star. For the past couple of years I've been treated very well by the doctors and staff. My first visit I was also surprised by an additional charge. But when she explained the service was deemed medical by the insurance company and they would not cover it, I understood. I was NOT at all happy, but this is a ruling by the insurance company, not the doctors office. I have VSP, which covers a lot of stuff. I would have appreciated being advised that the particular service would not be covered prior to it being done. My grandchild, who has Medicaid, was also seen by this office. I agree with the sorry choices of Medicaid frames they offer. I almost had a meltdown. I don't know if this was a purchase select issue with the office, or if it was an availability issue with Medicaid. I do get upset when I see these "donate your old frames" boxes. I have always dropped my old frames in those (at other eye care centers) until I realized people on Medicaid do not get to choose from these. I find that to be a sad state of affairs. However, that is not something specific to this office. It appears to be across the board, which makes it a Medicaid thing.
Waited mths for a diabetic eye exam appointment . Got there and waited 2 hrs to see someone . Arrived at 3 and didn't leave til after 5 .
Lady at the front charged me my $10 copay for my insurance , then charged me another $50 because they said the procedure was under regular medical not my eye coverage. . These people then came in and said it was gonna be another $35 in order to give me my prescription for my new glasses. Just a warning to anyone who is planning on going here ..... wait to go to Morganton eye clinic instead. There is a reason why this place has so many bad reviews. I will be reporting these people to my insurance company and a few others . You can't rip people off and get away with it .
I didn't get an eye exam here. I did buy two pair of glasses that I have yet to pick up, as I just ordered them today. Melissa in Optical is awesome. She ordered a pair of glasses for me to try on just to see if I liked them. I loved them. Thank you Melissa for your help and friendly service!
