Dr. Sala and Dr. Cox are wonderful. We have been pleased with our daughter's care over the years. However, after a rude encounter with the receptionist over the phone, that has dropped their overall rating.
My daughter has special needs and we have been told for years that we do not have to worry about her aging out of the clinic.
I submitted a routine appointment request online and received a callback from the front desk. I was told that because my daughter is now 19 she can no longer be seen at their office (plus Dr. Sala is retiring - not a problem for us as Dr. Cox has also seen my daughter). I explained that we have been told that because of her special needs and previous eye problems she would be able to be seen there with no issues. This woman would not hear it. I asked for a recommendation for a patient with special needs and she rudely named a doctor at Lecom. We have never had any issues with the office until today.
Would give this dr 0 stars if I could. My two month old daughter had bi-lateral cataract surgery and we are currently hospitalized at Children's in Erie. Her contact fell out of her eye and she is unable to see. The dr refused to see her stating it's not an emergency. It might not be an emergency to him but to a parent whose daughter can't see because her contact fell out it is an emergency. Offered to see us Monday morning but waiting to Monday and having a child that can't see for a whole weekend is not an option. If we weren't hospitalized we would drive to Pittsburgh. This guy clearly doesn't care about the well being of a child. Don't depend on him at night or on a weekend as he clearly doesn't work.
Really enjoyed Dr. Sala and his team! Nick was so kind and explained everything in Layman's terms. Cindy was also super understanding! We unfortunately had to reschedule once due to a death in the family and she was so quick to help us! They also were accommodating and got my daughter in the same day, which was super appreciative as she originally was not scheduled to be seen.
Thank you guys!
Highly recommend!
Dr. Nick Sala is not only knowledgeable, he is very kind and compassionate. My husband and I truly appreciated his kindness and attention to detail with our daughter's surgery. I recommend him for his expertise and bedside manner.
I took my son to see Dr. N. Sala about 20 years ago when my son was having problems seeing even after just being seen by a local doctor. I was talking about him w/Dr (?) from Sears and he is the one who referred me. They saved my son's eye site. He barely had any vision in one eye and not great in the other. He is now 28 years old and wears no glasses and his site is great. Thank you
Would give zero stars if possible. Took my son to see Dr. Sala a few years ago One of my son's eyes cross. At first I thought maybe it was me but after his aunt, and a couple of his therapist also saw it we mentioned it to his pediatrician who referred us here we had a couple of appointments where we were told by Dr. Sala, and then the other provider that they weren't seeing it. We then noticed it seem to be more noticeable as he got older. We notified Dr. Sala's office and was told to try to get pictures of it. So we did this and sent them in, the office then reached out stating that Dr. Sala saw his eye crossing and to bring him in. We did and were again told they didn't see it. My son's father took him into this appointment as I had just had a baby and my son is autistic and it's easier for his dad to do the appointments. I didn't understand how they could see that his eye was crossing in a picture but not in office, so my son's father sent an email just simply asking for clarification for me since I was not there. The email we got was did not clarify anything instead it was a condescending email using big words to try and make us feel stupid and basically ending with if we didn't like what they had to say we could seek a second opinion in Pittsburgh or Buffalo. I didn't do that, instead I researched eye doctors that have experience dealing with autistic children and found a wonderful eye doctor in Cranberry who not only was able to see my son's eye was crossed but also showed my son's father the best way to hold him to do the exam. And that is now where both my children go. It may be a bit of a drive but it's worth it for a doctor that will listen and cares. Instead of telling us the didn't know how to deal with a child like my son, they dismissed his issue and tried to shut me down when I was advocating for him.
This office is EXTREMELY unprofessional! Upon arrival, I was very overwhelmed by the chaotic decorations, including, but not limited to, an extremely creepy clock (which actually makes sense once you meet the doctor). The doctor came out and called for "the Eller girls." I'm assuming he didn't even bother to check his chart to know that the twins are not both girls, as one is a boy, which admittedly annoyed me. He then called my son by the wrong name, which happens regularly, so I politely stated how to say it properly. He snapped back, yelling, "What did you say?" This has NEVER happened before, as most people who mispronounce his name usually correct themselves and apologize. I then yelled back at the doctor and told him again how to say my son's name, insisting that he would say it properly. He then stated it's not his problem to learn about "Nordic trash," which my son's name is not at all, but this doctor was so self-indulgent that he would rather look bad than apologize, correct himself, and move on!
Later, in the examination room, after having my wife hold our child for the examination, he decided to have inappropriate contact with her by rubbing her shoulder, which he had no reason to do since my wife was neither in the way nor a patient. He continued his angry comments throughout the eye screening and then came to me, bent down, and inappropriately patted my leg while saying, "Thanks for the one-star review!" I informed him that if he touched me or my wife again, I would retaliate. He knew what I meant, and I was not playing any games! He had already insulted my religious views, my heritage, and my children, and by means of touch, he had assaulted my wife. I was done, and I let him know so.
He then looked at my wife and told her never to come back, which we do not plan to do. As a medical professional myself, I cannot, in good conscience, allow him to continue in practice, so I am filing a complaint with the PA Medical Board. I have already filed a complaint with our insurance provider, who informed me that this practice has multiple complaints against them. Be wary of coming here, as something is not right about this doctor!
My son and I love how well everyone at Dr Sala's office treats us! They have been amazing since the start. They all are very caring and spend as much time as you need to answer your questions. Dr Sala and Lori make you feel like a part of their family. They are great with kids and their smiles are so contagious. I know going there my son gets the care he needs and is not just a number but another success story from Dr Sala. Getting Kaden's glasses there has been a breeze. Rhonda and Cathy have gotten him taken care of countless times and know what style Kaden likes.
